I feel particularly close to you, since many of you were my friends before you came to Samohi. Manylof our conversations together have stressed the importance of our activities and attitudes in this community. I was, therefore, pleased when you chose as the theme for this book those wonderful lines from a Robert Burns poem, Would that we could see ourselves las others see us. It is my hope that Samohi has helped you to achieve the ability for critical analysis. To be honest with one's self, to stand up in a group and fight for one's own integrity are the marks of a truly matured indi- vidual. There are no shortcuts to being honest and decent. There are no quick methods of becoming success- ful. All that is good and true and worthy must be earned by courageous effort. It is my hope that Samohi has started you along the path of individual integrity, and you have become the kind of person of whom Samohi can be proud. I Good luck to you all in the future! Along with Ralph Waldo Emerson, let me say to you, Hitch your wagon to a-starf, Set your goals high, and by hard work and determination build foundations under your George K. Drake castles in the sky.
