It wad frae monie a blunder free us And foolish notion! What airs in dress an' gait wad lea'e us, And ev'n devotion! -Robert Burns These simple lines written in 1780 by the Scottish poet, Robert Burns, seem to the Nautilus Staff to have a particular implication today, almost two hundred years later. We were especially impressed by the idea stated by Burns that in seeing our- selves as other see us we would be free from many uncertainties, blunders, and foolish notions. In addition there are many students who now, because they conform so strongly to group ideals, have lost their individuality, integrity, and moral responsi- bility. An uncluttered, self-analytical look at themselves would make our Samohi students develop into the type of young people we shall need to govern our de- mocracy in the Atomic Age. Dayna Judd Editor f .,- .-5,-,-,13:J-rv-:g-e-f-1+-11'-4-rr:x1-:'-vftq-:-ff-f-f-a- - -- ,f I N I' PRI CIPAL To the Class of 1963: I am proud of you and your accomplishments. I feel particularly close to you, since many of you were my friends before you came to Samohi. Manylof our conversations together have stressed the importance of our activities and attitudes in this community. I was, therefore, pleased when you chose as the theme for this book those wonderful lines from a Robert Burns poem, Would that we could see ourselves las others see us. It is my hope that Samohi has helped you to achieve the ability for critical analysis. To be honest with one's self, to stand up in a group and fight for one's own integrity are the marks of a truly matured indi- vidual. There are no shortcuts to being honest and decent. There are no quick methods of becoming success- ful. All that is good and true and worthy must be earned by courageous effort. It is my hope that Samohi has started you along the path of individual integrity, and you have become the kind of person of whom Samohi can be proud. I Good luck to you all in the future! Along with Ralph Waldo Emerson, let me say to you, Hitch your wagon to a-starf, Set your goals high, and by hard work and determination build foundations under your George K. Drake castles in the sky. gv CONTENTS FACULTY . . . GOVERNMENT .... . SPORTS .... . . ORGANIZATIONS . . . . ACTIVITIES .... . CAMPUSLIFE... ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS . . . During the fall semester, under the leadership of President Tim Caudio, the club put on an after game dance and the donkey basketball game. They also were in charge of the fall sports banquet. In the spring semester, Charlie Clark was elected president. Under his direction, the club carried out two sports award banquets, the Sports Night and a County Fair Day Booth. The Donkey Basketball Game was one of the most humorous high- lights of the year. i l l 1 6 l l w, fi t l B C l i l M '-vu J Z . .' r H t ix y' n , ' .- vp fl-91 ..v, .v' i A 'gh QR ,U ..- .Mp ,e ,, uh., xml. ,- .995-i 1-5.5 ELF, l 4 ' ,.n V X , . 4-4.- -6421 ?1'!4-3192 .U fr- --:-:,--54: - , f,,.,....N.-,,.i,,- -H---My--L-uw--wwe-f-m'- -- -.-,1:.sfseves?4'?5?1'2m,:-11-2'2f7r5'.f:ax. : 1 fffrfe-L.-.-.f-.,- .Puff-,'.z 1.-J N , , . ,T - - A-V--if - -4:-1, L1-.4 :.- 1-'-as-.1s1' .-. .-,-fir.-.fr-1'-N-N --.-,N-r ,,.,f --, - , ,-.,-:.:..: .--- -.1 gf, . f-Yr: ff- -.- - . You gave me the oppor- tunity to come here, to get acquainted with you all, our Samohi, and the best city in the United States. My picture of Santa Monica is like a Golden Place in a Colden State. ln this Golden Place there liye about 87,000 nice and friendly people. They all helped me, each in his own way, through the whole year. Between the ocean, mountains, and Los Angeles, Santa Monica lies with its clean streets and huildings. At 601 Pico Blvd. l see the ocean as far as my eyes can look. Here our Samohi is. l am still surprised and I will always he to find a school over three blocks square. I was told the school was fifty years old. 1 cannot believe it. Samohi looks like one-day old with its shining, yellow huildings, and its perfect administration. 'The sound of the Satnohi-song. Oh Samohi. Dear old Samohi, Queen of the setting sun , . . will always ring in my ears when 1 go hack to Norway - and forever. J ll L , ,-....,.... - M W l ll ll f King Mike Reukema Queen Pat Shafer On February 2, 1963, the Sergeanettes presented their annual Sergeanettesa Ball. Malaguena represented the theme of the Ball. The decorations were in accordance with the theme. Crepe paper streamers in shades of red were extended from the ceiling to the far corners of the gym. Red roses were depicted on the walls and on the crepe paper. Music for the dance was supplied by Keith Williams. The band played from a rose, decorated Gazebo. Honored guests of the ball were Mrs. Lila Hutton and Mr. Donald Siffert who climaxed the evening with the crowning of the King and Queen. L Y'f , . Proportional! A unique Samohi tradition is the school's Art Gallery-the only one to our knowledge that is an integral part of the school life and curriculum. Founded in 1937 under the superb guidance of Mrs. Josephine Seaman Roberts, Samohi's fine Art Department Chairman, the Art Gallery had expanded to such a degree that it fast became a cultural center of the Bay Area. A part of Samohi's recent re-construction and remodeling was designated as the New Art Gallery and Art Department and de- servedly dedicated to Mrs. Roberts on September 18, 1962. Much of the past success of our Art Gallery was due to the hard work and unfailing faith of Mrs. Lucille Brown Greene, now an Art Instructor at Santa Monica City College fwhose paintings were on display in the new gallery dedication night? and Mrs. Nanon Ohman, now our Art Department Chairman. Both oi these dedicated teachers were honored at the Dedication Reception which more than 200 people attended. An interesting exhibition schedule for the new Roberts Art Gallery has been announced. 45, X ,' 5 ,Qtr RVN em.
