A1- though often taken for granted, the job of counselor is an important one. Their most important assignment is that of scheduling classes. Through their efforts we are able to keep track of our chosen major. Besides advising us which course is best for us to follow, they Work to afford us with a greater number of extracurricular privileges. Several of these are Career Day, Iowa Placement Tests, visits from college representatives, supervision of student tours to colleges, and many others.

The student at Santa Monica High School has an ex- ample set by this famed traveler of the southern seas. He lives and studies in the atmosphere of Samohi and adds to his education year by year. Our hopes are that each of you will develop new and better ideals and goals with a dedication and loy- alty to the principles of Samohi. George Tichenor Coordinator of Guidance To the Student Body: When, in 1858, Oliver Wendell Holmes wrote The Chambered Nautilus, he ex- pressed poetically the creed of all those who believe in man's ability to build upon his past through the discarding of outmoded ways. This optimistic philosophy was then characteristic of the idealism and the con- fidence ofa young expanding America Where far-flung horizons invited exploration. Today, when constant change has be- come, paradoxically, the status quo, the words of the poet assume greater meaning and remind us that each individual must determine and achieve his ultimate goal.
