EWING KONOLD Principal wa-W.-wi ll As you turn the pages of this annual, it is our hope that it will bring back many pleasant memories of your campus and your fellow classmates at Santa Monica High School. It has been the aim of the faculty and administration to help you become outstanding citizens of tomorrow. Day by day, you have grown in intel- lectual depth and moral integrity. Some- times you have faltered on the ladder to success, but we are confident that the rich experience of your high school days and the able guidance of your teachers, coun- selors, and administrators will be the im- petus that urges you to greater heights in the future. After voices in the halls die away and graduation is in the past, not all is forever quiet. For yours are the voices of the future that will sing and shout the words of tomorrow. JOSEPH E. Lost anything? Ask Mrs. Pat Morefield in the Dean's office. The lost and found is one of her many responsibilities in addi- tion to doing secretarial work for Boys' and Girls' Leagues. Mrs. Marion Skelton, Mr. Day's secretary, is responsible for the most popular publication on campus-the blue bulletin. Checking student eligibility, handling student body elections and money drives are two other common duties. Bz-z-z, b-zhz-z. Nothing on campus is as familiar among the classroom sounds as the buzz of the telephone or P.A. system. Mrs. Dorothy Dandurand is the voice on the end of that buzz. Records of the good grades made by Samohi students are filed in the Registration Office by Mrs. Louis Palenno and Mrs, Vivienne Stephenson, Where and why are the two most common words with Mrs. Lelo Williams, Mrs, Mildred Deon, and Mrs. Mary G. Field of the Attendance Office, Samohi's missing-persons depart- ment. Students who have lost their locker keys or text books turn to Mrs. June Johnson for help in replacing them, These indus- trious workers in the free text also tackle the iob of passing out the books at the beginning of each semester. Our very capable nurse, Miss Lillie May Green, is ready, willing, and able to cure all aches and pains of the Samohi Vikings. The credit for our beautiful and tidy campus belongs to our efficient maintenance staff: James F, Tysl, senior head custodian, Felix R, Ontiveros, junior head custodian, the cus- todians-Harry M. Hager, Harold A. Bowden, Edward Saxby, Thomas Strouther, Lemuel J. Flore, Rueben Russell, Alfred Van Tine, Leonard W. Beard, the matrons-Rose Atkins, Hattie Naglehoutg the gardeners-Clifford V. Younger, Werner Heu- bel, David Wilder, Jr., Edwin P. Argast, John Peter Alessi, and Tim Bunner. Holding the purse strings of Samohi is Mrs. Burk in the Business Office. Helping clubs with their bookkeeping and main- taining a smooth running Vikes' Inn are two factors of her everyday duties. fff, M f , W Y ff YN J ,' X- , il Y 2-212 'S '15 ' f I ,rfffp my K. -wvg,Qf,,,, TIXWSSWNS . w - 232 ' , f , WVW w 3, ,f , ,, If ,WWVZW MQW W W f ix +1 tm- if fZ l f 5 gr X , ll Xl. 4 I l.:r ,.l 'I L fl' f I , f 1 K xx X f fi x .? During their Junior year the class kept in step with their money raising schedule by selling pro- grams at football games, hosting a second fac- ulty luncheon, and sponsoring an after-game dance. These functions raised the money that went into the successful production of the Senior Prom South Seas which was held at the Deau- ville Club. Leading the winter warriors in the first semes- ter of their Senior year were: Terry Tondro, President, Larita Brown, Vice-President, Carol Ann Clayton, Secretary, and Shirley Walker, Treasurer. Important activities of this semester included: the choosing of Senior sweater emblem and color, a car wash, and the Senior Play Ghost Train featuring Rendie Lu Anderson, Carol Horton, and Ken Smith. Donning their aqua sweaters as Senior A's, the class elected Rendie Lu Anderson, President, Karen Horn, Vice-President, Bobbie Leverett, Sec- , X . retary, and Betty Huntsman, Treasurer. Other important offices held by Senior A's are on the A.S.B. Cabinet, Lauren Reager, President, Judy Coleman, President of Girls' League, Don Drake, Commissioner of Boys' Athletics, Ken Smith, Com- missioner of Entertainment, Carol Horton, Com- missioner of Publications, and Charles English, Commissioner of Safety and Health. Rendie Lu Anderson dolled up in a football uniform to play the lead in the hilarious Senior Play Time Out For Ginger. This story of a feminine football player and her speech-writing father was termed the best comedy that Samohi has produced in several semesters. The Riviera Country Club was the scene of the breath-taking Senior Prom, Winter Wonder- land. The music of Tommy Jones and his Or- chestra provided the perfect background for the coronation of Judy Haley and Val Hoy as Queen and King of the event. As they walked across the stage to receive their diplomas. Samohi bid adieu to these mighty Vikings and filed the impressive records of this class in her book of memories. Treasurer. .lune Seniors Recall Valued Experiences During their first year as Samohi Vikings, the members of the June class of '56 elected Deanna Afner and Don Ouchida to guide them and start traditions by which their class would be known. Sounding off tor the Junior B semester were President, Chuck Palmore, Vice-Presi- dent, Ray Kondo, Secretary, Susan Pickett, and Treasurer, Jean Lee. A class party cli- maxed this administration. Four hundred Viking Teamsmen united under the able leadership of Junior A Presi- dent, Judy Frantz, to produce an unsurpass- ed prom which netted S200 for their willing treasury. Vice-President, Gary Gholson, Sec- retary, Judy Glick, and Treasurer, Barbara Anthony worked feverishly to make this one of the most profitable semesters ever. As these Vikes became Seniors, they start- ed their last year by electing Tim Knapp, President, Georgia Bremer, Vice-President, Mary Dana, Secretary, and Rosemary Schmitz, Treasurer. The main job of this group was to lay firm foundation for the coming Senior A semester. Mary Hattaway now took over the helm. Assisting her with Saxon-strength were Chuck Palmore as Vice-President, Barbara Anthony as Secretary, and Joy Sutherland as money watcher. As they glance back at their tremendous Senior Play, Death Takes a Holiday, the prom, and Grad Night, they will remain proud of having been part of the voice that is the Viking. GLORIA R. I 7 The House of Representatives Surpasses Previous Records The Voice of The Viking booms loud and clear under such astute leadership as can only be rendered by Cliff Putnam. Assisting him in his position of Viking leader was his very capable secretary, Aletrice Grinclstaff. Two of the most important drives of the fall House of Representatives were the P.T.A. and the Nautilus Sales, which succeeded previous drives. With the coming of the spring semester the gavel and pin of Speaker of the House were handed to Tim Knapp. Through his ceaseless efforts and with the cap- able assistance of Deanna Afner the same high stand- ards and ideas of Samohi have been carried out. Through their timeless and boundless efforts the Vik- ings will again try to surpass all drives and goals head- ed by the House of Representatives. MV' W, V. , -sq . On The Air If you have ever been behind the scenes of a professional radio show, you know much of what occurs in our own KCRW-FM here at Samo- hi. Twice each week, on Tuesday and Thursday, this industrious group puts on a show well worthy of praise for its content ond presentation. According to Mr. Eichholz, sponsor of this not so ordinary class, there are four points of pri- mary concern, writing, speaking, directing and engineering. Though graded largely on these four, a student may also specialize in the one I ,sw zu. This is KCRW-FM, located at Santa Monica High School, signing on for another pleasure-packed afternoon. Be careful not to miss a cue or blow ci line. of his choice. Led by Norman Mulvenon, President, Joe Crawford, Veep, and Leda Lewis, Secretary- Treasurer, each member is assigned to write his own show. lt is amazing to note the variety this group masters: drama, music, readings, news, sports news, comedy, all accomplished with simi- lar professional attitudes. KCRW-FM is truly one organization befittingly placed among Samohi's highest attributes, repre- senting her voice, ond yours, on the air. ...W 7 A Z -1 The sound effects man has to get in on every act! The people behind the scenes come into the open long enough to have a picture snapped. The Voice-ln Reality Memories are wonderful and cher- ished echoes of the past. A year book offers a visual record of these remem- brances. This year's NAUTILUS brings you a new medium: an aural sou- venir-the sounds of Samohi on rec- ord. So we present the audio and video memento of the year T955- 1956. Our Editor, Pat Moody, is constant- ly on the go in order to meet the deadlines of the photographer, record engineer, engraver, and printer. With her able Associate Editor, Carolyn Harris, she organizes and executes the year long operation. Barbara Warner, Editorial Assistant, was in charge of the printer's dummy. NAUTILUS' Art Editors, Lois Thorpe, Janet Harmon, and Peggy Harrison had the tasks of designing and draw- ing the four layout dummies. Copy Editor, Marinell Wright had the extra iob of writing and directing the script for the record while Fred Beck worked faithfully on sound with the tape recorder. Katharine Mac- intosh and Carmen Crumpacker act- ed as liaison for the printer and en- graver. Sports Editor, Carmen D'Antonio was in complete charge of planning the sports section. Photographers George Kelly and Ronald Kealen kept photographers busy scheduling 2,000 pictures. The business aspects of the NAUTI- LUS are handled by Bettelu Higham, Advertising Manager, Dixie David, Business Manager, and Barbara Kos- koff, Sales Manager. Backbone of the very able crew were Stephan McReynolds, Jill Mar- ble, Joy Sutherland, Linda Douglas, Louise Bernero, Linda Allen, Glenda Martyn and Jeslyn Coon. After meeting our crew, we invite you to enioy your Voice of the Viking for many years to come. f f---u- 44mm 0? w -rv X. f I , v x 5 f 5 f 4 I 4 ,ff K, ,4 X ,X 1 X 1 ..--4 Ve Y-2 , av fwii 2. From a small group of eight or ten members, it has grown to its pres- ent enrollment of over sixty. lt is not an exaggeration to say that the Viking Band is one of the most important organizations at Samohi. Mr. Wagnon, the director, has worked hard to put this organization on a high plane and he is very proud of the fact that the band is almost entirely run by student officers. Through the years, l've seen the functions of the band grow considerably. At first, its sole obiect was to give President, ,, , Vice-President ,...., Secretary ,..,,,. .. Now, the band takes part in parades, plays at all football games, social affairs and assem- plays for concert programs, A , blies. By so doing it serves both the school and the community by affording them pleasure. l have now related to you, from a few pages of my book of records, a part of the story of the Viking Band: a story of progress, of service, of leadership, and of giving enioyment to all. DELIANS VOICE As the Delians stepped out to magnify their prosperous proiects of last year, they sought to find leaders capable of the deeds they wished performed. These were found at their first lected President, Carole Kon- meeting when Terry Tondro was e old, Vice-President, Mary Hattaway, Corresponding Secretary, Judy Harrington, Recording Secretary, and Albert Shirk, Treas- urer. Starting off the treasury in a y p tion were the profits brought in by the regular book cover drive. Griffith Park provided facilities for the well earned semi- annual Ditch Day. Here the Delians spent a whole day hiking, playing tennis, and thoroughly enjoying themselves. d out the semester the board put on a Christmas wa leasing to any organiza- To roun ' party for the members and associates. Entertainment for this festive occasion was furnished by a program given by the Forensics Club. .Y Kwik , 1, wr Awrli mi. 1. , H , i z ff as XX N ,sW.......--+s...--M Kim- sf s 4 'IA -Il. 34fS.NLQ LC. Scholarship For Servic Busy sounds of organizing pouring out of Room 72 almost every noon proved to be the reason for the exceptionally fine activities which comprised this semester's Delian chapter. Head- ing the spring board with efficiency plus was Doris Knief. Assist- ing her were: Dick Clapp, Vice-President, Linda Steingart, Cor- responding Secretaryp Anne Crowder, Recording Secretaray, and Edwin Beckenbach, Treasurer. The George Washington Assembly offered the first big chal- lenge of the semester. However, it was met and the assembly turned into one of the most memorable of the season. As their contribution tothe foreign student fund the Delians donated the profits from their first movie, Magnificent Obses- sion. Ditch Day consisted of a school day spent at fabulous Disneyland, taking all the rides, investigating all the little shops, buying souvenirs, and sampling the tasties of each land. This year the long awaited and looked forward to Seal Bear- ers' Banquet was held at the Santa Ynez Inn ending another very eventful year. 15,0- 2 if Q, nm ifw Ji !fQJLpvJ0 L xx ,fi io fi if N, . Career Day One of Samohi's traditions, Boys' and Girls' Career Day, is fast becom- ing a National trend. On Career Day, graduating Seniors are invited to take a personal glimpse of the business world of which they are soon to be- come a permanent fixture. This year's League and Cabinet members took over administrative offices on campus and throughout the city, while over three hundred other Seniors became business executives. Samohi has carried on this annual tradition since it was first initiated in l929. By participating in Career Day, the graduates learn business tech- niques, the responsibilities of admin- istrators, and to associate with people from all walks of life. Career Day is just another step up the path of learning. All the steps combined give the student the under- standing and knowledge he needs to become successful in whatever he may choose to do. This tradition, from all indications, shall continue through the years to guide and aid graduates who plan a career in the business world. f . . mf- . . COACHES-Coach Navarro, Coach Stillwell Coach Kramer Pigskin On The Run Before the T956 football season started, the fate of our Viking eleven was questionable since they were no longer in Bay League competi- tion. ln addition to pioneering in free-lancing, Coach Stillwell had another problem to plague him, the shortage of seasoned players. In their first game against Hawthorne, winner of the small school C.I.F., the Vikes managed to slip through with a 7-6 favor. After tucking the first game's victory into their pockets, the Vik- ings sharpened their attack and downed Mira Costa 28-12. Inglewood was crushed 40-O by the now con- fident Vikings, whose record then stood at three wins, no losses. Centennial proved to be too much for the Viking eleven when our team tell to a T8-6 defeat. Anaheim also capsized the Viking crew as they tallied T4 points. Samohi then stood with a 3-2 record and much broken spirit ibut plenty of fightt. Their following game against Las Vegas was sched- uled as the biggest game of the season. When the wheels stopped spinning the score was T4-7 Samohi. The Vikes won their last two games against Garden Grove 27-14, and Santa Ana T9-7 thus earning the right to enter the C.I.F. playoffs. They lost their first game to Alhambra, ending the season. We'll be looking forward to seeing you in next year's C.l.F. playoffs, Vikings. Eager B' Look Forward To Next Season The beginning of a new fall semester found a new record-ninety-four boys turned out for eca me permanent mem- B football. Those who b bers of the team developed into hard-hitting, eager football players capable of carrying the title of Samohi Vikings to victory. Bcb Sweet, one of Leach's top notch tackles for 3 years, was voted the most valuable B player. Twenty-two letters were awarded to these team members: Ted Armbrister, A. J. Bailey, Joel Burt, Mike Carter, Joel Cowan, Coaches Sevland and Leach. Larry Davis, Paul Davis, Barry Delahunty, Bruce Dickson, Vince Guercio, Armondo Lamore, Alex Manigo, Steve McBeth, John Packard, Danny Ricketts, Bud Steining, Leeroy Sweeney, Bob Sweet, Neal Treadwell, Richard Wallace, Cap West, and Bob Wimler. In the League standing, Samohi bowed only to Leuzinger and Torrance, winning three and losing three. Several of these players will return next fall to be the center of football attraction and the center of Samohi victory. This is the question all sports minded people on campus Varsity Basketball-Precision Quintet were asking before the season began The team had the potential, but only through hard work and the efforts of Coach Tom McGarvin did they capture second place in the Bay League. Coach McGarvin worked with his five man power house until it was molded into one of the finest fast breaking teams at Samohi. Tom Bennett, Perry Bates, Norman Hensley, Larry Gross, and John Reams composed McGarvin's precision piece of machinery. Ginger's exploit caused quite a bit of confusion in her home town. Among the thoroughly flabbergasted were her family, Howard Carol, Ginger's father, her mother, Agnes, and her older sisters Joan and Jeanne, The female football star added a little more to the bedlam when she outran the fastest track man in school, Eddie Davis. Lizzie, the maid, was a stalwart supporter for a women's world. Also in the cast of the Winter '56 class play were Ed Hoffman, banker, and Mr. Wilson, school principal. Although it disappointed her father, Tommy Green was very pleased when Ginger decided to turn in her football gear and become a lady. :-. 1 1 g .rr 'II uDeath Takes a Holiday at Samohi The Spring Class of '56 was proud to present as its Senior Play Death Takes o Holiday. Written by Al- berto Casella and translated by Walter Ferris, the play is based onthe poetic conception of death suspending all activities for three days and assuming human flesh. Death, as Prince Sirl-ci of Alexandri, visits Duke Lambert and his family, his wife, the Duchess Steph- anie, Corrado, their son, the Baron Cesorea, and his daughter-in-law, Alda. Also staying in the Italian castle are Eric Fenton and his sister, Rhoda. While trying to discover why mortals cling to lite and tear death, Prince Sirki falls in love with the Princess ot San Lucafs daughter, Grazia. The cast also included Duke Lambert's friend, Ma- jor Whitreadp Cora, his maid, and Fedele, the butler.
