Since fhe close of fhe conflicf, fhe enrollmenf in 'I'he music deparfmenf has been sfeadily increasing, and fhis year if has passed even pre-war sfandards. Because music plays such an imporfanl' parf in The life of everyone, fhe music deparfmenf is one of fhe Iargesf in fhe school, and includes sfudenfs who display fheir 'I'aIen'I's singing, play- ing insfrumenfs, and composing. Of 'I'he various groups in fhis deparfmenf, one of fhe mosf prominenf is 'I'he Choral Ensemble, under fhe leadership of Miss Doris Moon and i'rs founder of 'rhe deparfmenf. Because of 'Ihe fremendous popularify of fhis group, I'hey are consfanfly occupied preparing for fufure pro- grams. Due 'ro fhis exfremely busy season, fhey were unable fo accepf all invi'I'aI'ions which came fheir way, including parficipafion in 'Ihe Sanfa Monica Bach Fesfival under 'I'he sponsorship of fhe Music Arfs Sociefy, and fhe Soufhern Cali- fornia Vocal Fesfival. Among 'Ihe comparifively new organizafions of fhe music deparfmenf is 'rhe Boys' Glee Club, which gives oooorfunify for general singing. The second semesfer officers of fhe group were: Dick Horn, Pres., John Mc- Combie, Vice-Pres.: Tom Dunnicliffe, Sec.: Gor- don LeaviI I', Sergeanl af Arms: and Paf McHugh, Librarian. Maferial in fhe Glee Club includes semi-popular songs and service songs. The Boys' Glee Club fook par'I' in fhe Chrisfmas Concerf. The sfudenfs of Samohi are very forfunafe in being able 'Io enioy no+ only 'Iheir own organiza- fions, buf many oufside music ac+ivi+ies as well. Lasf fall fhe enfire sfudenl' body enjoyed a music assembly feafuring Fredrick V. Bowers, an old fime vaudeville singer. His program included fhe singing of many old fime songs, a number in which fhe audience parficipafed. Ofher musical feafures presenfed in Barnum Hall during fhe year included a group of Young People's Con- cer+s , one of which was presenfed by Rudolph Ganz, pianisfg 'rhe ofher was presenfed by fhe celebrafed dance feam Veloz and Yolanda. The Philharmonic Arfisfs' Associafion presenfed an excellenf group of concerfs, which feafured Alfred Wallensfein conducfing +he Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchesfra. During 'I'his season of concerfs appeared such well known musicians as Issac Sfern, violinisf, and Edward Pennario, pianisf. These concerfs were enioyed by 'l'he en- 'Iire San'I'a Monica communify, as well as a large number of Samohi sfudenfs. Each year invaluable musical confribulions are made by members of +he Harmony classes, buf of'I'enI'imes 'Ihese confribufions go by unnoficed. This year fhe qroup, as a semesfer proiecf, wrofe composifions in fhe Spanish idiom. Offen fhese are included as a parf of 'Ihe Fiesfa celebrafion. One of fhe mosl' 'ralenfed and promising of 'the music deparfmenf of fhe lasl' few years is Ray Ausfin '45, who, while affending Samohi, sfudied Harmony concenlrafing on composifion. In bofh 'rhe Chrisfmas Concerfs of '45 and '46 he was honored by having fwo of his composifions sung by 'rhe Choral Ensemble. A+ 'Ihe presenl' fime he is workinq on new arrangemenfs of our fwo school hymns, The Hymn of Praise , and The Alma Maier , for fhe Charol Ensemble, and is making adapfafions for fhe Band. The composer of fhe Hymn of Praise , 'Ihe well known composer Ken Darby, of fhe King's Men, is also an alumnus who maiored in Harmony. Samohi heard from fhis well known composer again when he dedicafed par+ of his regular Friday nighl' KFI broadcasf fo fhe high school. Parf of 'Ihis broadcasf was pre- senfed during fhe evening performance of fhe '47 Talenl' Show. Members of fhe Samohi music alumni whose com- posi'I'ions confribufed fo 'Ihe success of fhis year's Chrisfmas Concerl' were: Bruce Sufherland, '4I, fhe composer of Mins+rels , and Gloria Somers, '44, fhe composer of The Angels Sing . Bofh of fhese numbers were sung by fhe Choral En- semble. Also feafured on Ihe program was Mar- gerel' Gross, a former Choral Ensemble soloisf, who, wifh her beaufiful soprano voice, sang Canfique de NoeI , by Adam. She was accom- panied by Mrs. Rose Alice Wagner on 'rhe organ. The music deparfmenf feels honored when ifs former sfudenfs confinue fheir inferesf in 'I'he deparfmenf by fheir conI'ribu'I'ions 'I'o fhe school. .ai CHCDIR The Girls' Choir, under fhe leadership of Mrs Rose Alice Wagner, enioyed a successful firsf semesfer climaxed by fhe annual Chrisfmas. Cl-IORAL ENSEMBLE The Choral Ensemble, again under fhe direcfion of ifs founder Miss Doris Moon, who was on leave of absence dur- ing I945-46, has complefed a mosf successful year. This year has seen a marked enrollmenf increase, in facf fhe largesf in fhe four years of ifs organizafion. The Choral Ensemble is composed of a relafively small group of sfudenfs, who are especially selecfed for fhis fype of work. Much credif is due fhe members of fhis group, as some of fheir work is done on oufside fime, including bofh rehearsals and performances. Among fhe imporfanf presenfafions of fhe Ensemble were fhe Armisfice Day assembly, fhe Boys' League assembly, fhe Chrisfmas Concerf, fhe Talenf Show in which fhe Girls' Triple Trio sang, fhe Fiesfa, fhe Commencemenf ex- ercises, and fhe Annual Ensemble Concerf. As soloisf on fhis Concerf, we were priviledged fo hear Bob Karlin, an oufsfanding barifone, and a former Choral Ensemble soloisf. Offen fhe oufside performances of fhe group go by unnoficed. Among fhose we mighf menfion are music for fhe Public Schools Week, fhe assembly presenfed af Lincoln Junior High School for fhe A9's, fhe PTA meefings, a radio broadcasf, and fhe Chrisfmas services af fhe Presbyferian church. Mosf prefenfious of fhese was a radio broadcasf over KMPC in May. Feafured on fhis program was an arrangemenf of All The Things You Are , by Ray Ringwald, anofher Samohi alumnus. Closing fhe program was a choral composifion, Youfh , by Gordon Sfanfon. This former music sfudenf had fhis composifion firsf performed af his own graduafion in '4l. The selecfion was dedicafed fo fhe graduafion class of fhaf summer. Miss Gerfrude Wyman, a former member of fhe English faculfy who passed on fhis year, was always inferesfed in fhe work of fhe music deparfmenf. The Choral Ensemble paid final fribufe fo fhis feacher when, by requesf, fhey sang af her services. This final gesfure fo a wonderful woman and feacher was awe inspiring in ifs beaufy. This June, among fhe fradifional black robes of fhe Ensemble, will be seen ninefeen gray. Oufsfanding of fhese graduafing seniors are: Coefa Bilbo, Marcella Gandy, Veronica Oberf, Phyllis Terry, Carl Enzenberg, and Ray Nel- son.
