In the years ahead, Mr. Johnson's needs are few: a fishing pole, some bait, and a little bit of luck. We thank you for the years you have given to us and our College. joining the Santa Monica school system in 1923, Dean Krehbiel was initially an instructor of Industrial Arts. In 1930 he became the Director of the Evening Division of Santa Monica City College and has served in this capacity until his retirement in June of 1963. Dean Krehbiel looks ahead to the days when he will be able to putter in his elaborate home workshop or perhaps even climb a mountain or two. Sir, we wish you well. He has attended Boston Uni- versity, UCLA, and USC, where he earned the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. Because of his interest in human nature and its problems, he is a devotee of applied psychol- ogy. An author of many professional articles, Dr. Bose plans to concentrate on golf, photography, and traveling in the years ahead. May those future years be as rewarding for you as the past years have been for your students. l . Mrs. jeanette Wray Dr. Roy G. Bose In 1937, Mrs. Wray joined the faculty as an instructor of cosmetology and, except for a two year stint in the WAC's, has been teaching at City College ever since. A member of the National Cosmetologists Association as well as the Associated Cosmetology Teachers, Mrs. Wray knows that the years ahead will be busy, full, and rewarding. Her col- leagues and her students know that the past years have been rewarding for them, too. We salute you, Mrs. Wray. Name spelled wrong? Picture out of focus? Information incorrect? They had a successful season because of some outstanding performances, and a good all-around team effort. In the opening game against Foothill, Sindell threw 51 times, giving the fans a preview of the aerial game that the Corsairs were to em- ploy against their opponents throughout the season. Brosnan showed the form 'that later garnered for him his All-American rating, but 5 Foothill passes struck pay dirt and the Bucs for the first time in five years started the season as a loser. The flight home from Cabrillo was a happy one, however, as Bill Shaw, Russ Grossman, Chip Whitmore, and Bob Boozell showed that they were going to be important cogs in the Buc's wheel. The Renegades rather emphatically put an end to this brief resurgence. Bob Seeman high- lighted the game for Santa Monica with his 79 yard end run for a touchdown. Licking their wounds and dreading what lay ahead the rest of the season, the Bucs surprised everyone by jumping into a 20-O lead over the undefeated Western Conference Champion Cer- ritos Falcons. Late in the fourth quarter after the Falcons had fought back to tie the game, Sindell took the Corsairs on an electrifying 65 yard drive that started with only 47 seconds re- maining in the game. Sindell rolled to his right and hit Brosnan breaking over the middle to midfield. With no timeouts remaining Sindell threw over Whitmore's head to stop the clock. Twenty-three seconds remained as Sindell dropped back to throw to Brosnan on the left sideline. Pat took the ball, eluded the defender, and raced down the sideline to the three yard- line where he was tackled inbounds. Twelve seconds remained as Sindell called Grossman's number in the huddle. By the time-the ball was snapped, two seconds remained, and the gun went off just as Grossman took the sharply thrown pass and drove into the end zone. jim Powers Remembers Valley was not an easy victory. The Corsairs had to go through the air, four touchdown passes for Sindell, two to Brosnan and two to Whitmore. Grossman circled left end for the fifth touchdown. Hartunian and Proett blocked well, while Freedman and Griswold were strong defensively. East LA fell to the Bucs as they ran their string to three wins, Eliga played an outstand- ing game on defense. The Huskies were shut out only twice during the year, once by Long Beach and once by Santa Monica. Benglen, Chumo and McLean opened the wide running lanes for all of the running backs, but all in all it was the defense that turned back the Huskies. The San Diego game was saved by Gross- man's touchdown catch just before halftime, Brosnan's run withea pass early in the third quarter, and the ball-carrying job turned in by Bob Boozell. Guercio and Matthess turned back Adam Cato as the San Diego back drove for the game-winning extra points near the game's end. By winning their last two games the '62 team could have become undisputed conference champoins, but that was not to be. After lead- ing El Carnino 18-6 midway through the third quarter, the Corsairs fell to the hardfighting Warriors 21-18 in a thriller. In the final game the Bucs scored more points on Long Beach than the other 8 Vike op- ponents combined, and although trying gallant- ly to pull an upset, Santa Monica could not match Long Beach's power in the second half. On the Buc's third offensive play Boozell raced 54 yards for a touchdown, and the shocked Long Beach team trailed for the only time dur- ing the season. Whitmore caught 2 Sindell passes for touchdowns and Mike McLean was outstanding playing both ways. The Conference selections honored Sindell, Brosnan, Eliga, Riedy and Whitmore, while Brosnan and Sindell received All-American acclaim. 2 'sf N1 .3 If V 1- I Q X ,n X , . The Corsair cross country men needed most of its stam- ina to endure its season's record. A combination of lack of depth, plus the strongest Metro-conference ever, spelled disaster: a record of 0-7 in dual meets, john Hanna led the team through the early part of the season. His best effort was a first place victory over the tough as always El Camino warriors. Later jim Ryan joined Hanna to pull a 1-2 on East L.A. Biggest surprise of the year was former baseball and basketball player, Don McCarthy, who joined the squad in mid-season. Within two weeks his strength had pulled him to the top of the tem. He had the honor of sparking the Bucs to a highly successful day at the Mt. ' Sac Invitational, coming in 15th out of 23 teams, In spite of lack of experience, those of the second division of the squad who survived, responded with great improve- ment to Merritt's Spartan training. No' college team has ever won the championship' three years in a row in the history of intercollegiate com- petition. Sweeping past such teams as UCLA, SC, Stanford, and Florida State, The Bucs earned the distinction of being the best college team in the country during the championship matches held this year in San Antonio, Texas. Three of the Corsairs made the first team in the annual All American selections. They were Captain Paul MacLaughlin, Don Philips, and Bob Hogan. Steve Kiel and Bill Griebenow received honorable mention ratings. To the best college team in the United States and to their excellent coach, Bert DeGroot, the Student Body salutes you! As of Spin-Drift press time, the Corsair racquet- men enjoyed a 6 wins and 2 losses record and appeared to be a cinch for the runnerup honors in the conference. Strong performers were the number 1 and 2 men: Barry Weiss and Ed Fort, both of whom traveled to Ojai for the State singles competition. Well balanced and aggressive, the Corsairs three and four men, Jim Green and Phil Adams, proved invaluable. Showing steady improvement were Whelan, Ross, Forshee, Hawes and Arnold. Miler Don McCarthy was the brightest spot in this year's Corsair track season and as the Spin-Drift went to press had led his mates to a fine 3-l record. McCarthy, competing in his first track season, had broken the existing college records in both the.mi1e andthe two mile events. His teammates were equally impressive. Bowdie Burnett performed well in the high and low hurdles and Won consistently in these events, Other runners who aided the Corsair cause were Mike Boone in the 440 and 220 events and Bob Lefebvre in the 880. In the field events the Bucs were strong and competent. Bob Boozell in the shot put and Phil Thames in the discus pro- duced a flock of points lor the Merritt Men. Dave Sattren, college pole vault record holder, and newcomer Paul Dooze supplied strength in their specialities. Howard Dixon, Bob Seeman, Mike Bagdonas, and Gary Uline had line years in the dashes, broad jump and high jump. 1963's Consislenl Performers were of ll...
