ZACHMAN: Thanks For The Memories !! m 1112 V XX fem' f?er4'q-,Z 9 Dear Mater and Pater: I feel it my instinctive duty to sit down now so that posterity may have an accurate record of a few brilliant moments as they occurred last week, when, in a moment of sheer brilliance, this campus was filled with sounds of perfect sym- metry. I remember it well. The cafeteria was filled with piped-in jazz and a clammering of cow bells. I staggered out, was violently smashed against the wall of the library by a burgeoning mob. The clock tower struck eleven. The rally band broke forth with bombastie clammerings, accompanied by the shrill voices of two hundred savage stu- dents. A subtle flow of running water was heard from somewhere in the direction of the English Departmentg I don't think my ears will ever again experience the spiritual beauty and symmetry of man and nature. Emotion has overcome me, and I must pause. Your son, Aristotle LOOK OUT, YARDLEY . . . Still advancing at a terrific pace is our hero, but like most steeple- chase chumps Cchampsj and yearbook staffs, PROBLEMS do arrive. Anyway, onward and up- ward. 3- r S.-4 Campus Correspondence 43 Z Z Ss 'X -L ' f K9 . if is ...E .ETZ 502 DEATH CF A SALESMAN THEATER Arts production for the Fall Semester was acclaimed for its professional quality. His name is Harry Bull and he's the manager of the cafeteria. Reportedly, he's the direct heir to the throne of hamburg. Once a day I have the honor of dining in Mr. Bull's imaginative cus- ine. Last week we had octopus with avacado sause, served with heaping portions of alfalfa. Please send more cookies! Your robust son, ic N .Y-f. z M! x., 1 6 .tt 'T' 3 . 2 1 s 5 0 I x,-1 4m I I H.. I R I Ventura Veril Santa Monica 28-Ventura 6 Held to one touchdown in the first 30 minutes of play, the Santa Monica City College football team turned the tables after intermission to out- play an outmanned Ventura squad, 28-6. City College scored its first touchdown the second time it gained control of the ball. Fullback George Hughley clirnaxed a hard-driving march from midfield by smashing the last five yards for a touchdown, giving the Bucs an 8-O lead. It Wasn't until the third quarter that the Corsairs could untangle themselves from the usual first-game jitters. But once the second half started, the Bucs, under the leadership of second-string quarterback Van uishecl Rand Carter, found a winning combination. Hustling George Hughley sweeps end Hopi be Santa Monica 26-Boise 7 , The running of Dan Ghormley, George Hugh- ley and the passing arms of quarterbacks Rich Garbisch and Rand Carter, backed up by a great interior line effort, sparked the Santa Monica City College Corsairs to another second half explosion. The victim of the Bucs last half fireworks this time was a revenge-minded Boise JC team, which went down to defeat 26-7. The Corsairs found the first quarter of play to be extremely difficult, mainly because of Boise's tough line play and also because of three 15-yard penalties. The hitting of Gary Bushnell, John Bo- l gan, Larry Anderson and Mike Barrett g V .' ' enabled the Bucs to score plenty of - ' runs, but the mound weakness contrib- uted to mediocre successes. Ed Cadis and Carl Taylor were early- season hitting sparkplugs, but trailed off later. Hurling duties were shared by Al Schara, Val Lugo, Rick Schuchet, Arden Schug and Wayne Bee in relief. TENNIS Like a football team without a backfield, the Santa Monica City College tennis team faced the pros- pect of not winning the Metropolitan Conference title at press time for the first time in five years. Hurt badly by the loss for the season of the top two seeded stars Wayne Collett and Henry Hollweger, the Buc streak of 68 straight victories was snapped by Valley JC and it ap- peared as if a Metro title for ,61 were not in the cards. Lee Brown took over as first man, followed by Randy McKnight, Ken Weitzman, Gerry McElroy, Paul Castillo, John Lampl and Bill Clo- ver. Russell Love, Charles McClel- lan and Nelson Miller added depth to the squad. In his first year as mentor, Del Nu- zum did an admirable job of coach- ing after watching his conference and state titleuhopes darkened with the ineligibilities. THE RACQUET SQUAD . . . CCRSAIR GOLF Handicapped by lack of a sixth man, a potentially good Buc golf team had tasted defeat three times at p1'ess'time, but Coach Mulleneaux was searching for an experienced sixth man and expected better things for the Metro Conference and state meets. Each one of the Buc six, who never seemed to be all present during the Metro season, took a crack at the num- ber one seed during the season. With the rest of the confer- ence tougher than usual, it was a rugged road for Mulle- neaux's perennial champs. At press time, the Bucs already had beaten the perennial state champions in the Southem California Relays and the Lynwood Relays, both important pre-conference events. Jerry Fredericks: freestyle, butterfly and individual medley ace, and Auggie Shima, national record-holder in the 1500 meter free- style, were pacing the 'Buc tankers. Other important cogs in the Buc swimming machine were free- styler Bill Wuchetpfennig, breaststrokers Armin Hammersbach and Dexter Wood, and backstroke artists Tom Phillips, Don Wade and Allen Nuells. i The medley relay team of Phillips, Fredericks, Wood and Wucher- pfennig was among the finest JC quartets in the country.
