Marelich is a graduate of San .lose State where he was an outstanding ath- lete. Before starting coaching, Mr. Marelich play- ed end for the San Francisco Clippers, a profes- sional football team. Not only did Coach Marelich lead our teams throughout a successful interschol- astic athletic program, but he cultivated a new in- terest in the gym classes. The trampoline, parallel bar, and other new tumbling equipment are some of the new features that coach Marelich has in- troduced to our gym classes. Coach Marelich has Leonard Porterfield laid a much wider sports program for next year. Coach Leonard Porterfield did the impossible this yeor as he mentored two championship teams, varsity basketball and varsity baseball. Mr. Porter- field molded both teams into a super squad which had magnificent teamwork that any coach could be proud of. Porterfield also served in the capa- city of the Saintlets football skipper and gym in- structor. The man who turned out the pride of the school, the championship Cee team, was lovable coach Walter Word. However, this was no oddity for Mr. Word is always a champion builder wheth- er on or oft of the field of athletics. Besides serv- ing as Cee coach, Mr. Word teaches junior college science, Walter Word aint grid ters iinisll leagiie in eoonil place Meeting tough competition and bad luck, Coach Joe Marlich's Varsity Saintmen end- ed a mediocre I947 gridiron season with three wins, one tie, and four setbacks. The locals, however, finished in second place in the Central Coast League Conference. Although the locals finished the season with less than a 50096 average, they did amass I48 points against their opponents' l27 points. Typical of the Saint gridsters' ability to thrill a crowd was displayed in the last game of the season against Paso Robles, when they scored the winning touchdown with but two minutes left to play in the game. The local Red and White men dropped two tight encounters, both by one touchdown, to the San Luis Obispo Tigers, who won the Southern California Small School Championship. Coach Marlich only had one experienced man on the squad, Ira Harper, center, who was chosen Captain of the team and was named to the all-conference first team. Ken Cale, who was also on the first string all-conference team, and Tom Allen filled the guard position. Ken Bates, another bay who received first string all-conference recognition, and Stanley Do- minguez held down tile tacklesslots. Jack Childers, Don Garrett or Wayne Hollingsworth usually filled the end positionsi Rich Warne, another on the first string of the all-conference team, was the outstand- ing backfield man on the squaa and held down the right half slot. Ken Crain, second string all-conference member, was left halfback. Ray Smith and Don Halt, two of last year's line- men, were converted into the Quarterback position, Smith usually on offense and Holt on de- tense. Bob Okie O'Brien and Bob Odell traded off for the fullback position.
