For those of us who have chosen pre- professional or academic courses, there is a broad field of courses given. A suitable vocational cur- riculum adapted to meet the needs of our community and state is of- fered for those interested along these lines. A special curriculum for those who are not suited for either of these, is also available. By these means, an equal opportunity is provided for all of us to obtain a general education, regardless of our race, creed or color. In this way, all the children of all thc people will become intelligent, self- reliant citizens of the future. fn 1 ff .3 ' ' W, 3 4 ' 4, 1, 9 33.5 ' ,iff V ' -all I ,r Xhoxe y e erlntenttnt 1 1 1 e no me 'lllll KU K 14 mm: t ator P mm or ?atu e graduating seniors Mr Harry E Tyler easily won the admirition respect, and friend ship of eyery student in the school The first and most important tasle that eonfronted Mr Tyler vias the adapting of the school program to the war emergency He made it possible for girls to train for yocations and boys to get pre induction training, with the farsighteel addition of a counseling sys tern by which the students haye a time and a place to meet with their counselors To proyide an education for all the children of all the people is the aim of Mr Tyler in deyeloping the program for our school He has especially endeayored to malee the sehool a friendly pllce by dexeloping a true demoeratic feeling between students and the faculty In doing this, a re il xoiee in the org inizxtion of the school has been giyen to both the students and faculty M L C , ?', - W , . . 5 T Q A if l gli 2 ll i . f. llziriy li. As chairman of the counseling and student per- sonnel division, matters concerning attendance irregularities and class room guidance are given her special attention. X5C'e owe a great deal to her foresight in establishing two very active student organizations. the Girls' League and the vveeklv paper, The Breeze. Never too busy to give aid to some deserving stu- dent, Miss Pope has helped many to find themselves in high school and their place in the future. Mr. Wilson The responsibility for student transportation, the smooth opera- tion of our Board of Control, and other student affairs falls on the shoulders of Mr. Wlilliam Wil- son, our assistant district superin- tendent, vice principal. and dean of boys. Many fine programs and dances were presented this year with his assistance. In his capacity as Dean of Boys some of us have been sent to him for discipline but more have gone to him to get ad- vice on some student problem. Re- turning servicemen and other alum- ni visiting the school seek out Prof,'i as we fondly call him, to pass the time of day and to learn of mutual friends and classmates. To him all of us students are part of a big family. f ., ,ff - . N 4 X, 49 I I. 4 -. if , 0 ! Our Needs After Graduation Considered The establishing of our graduation requirements and approving of the petitions of prospective grad- uates are a few of the many duties of our Adminis- trative Council. This group, meeting weekly, acts as a clearing house for all internal school policies. Mat- ters concerning the opening and closing of school, registration, examinations and others of this nature are acted upon by this representative organization. Graduation requirements adopted in june, 19-44, by this group have been continued through the year. To graduate, we must have met the following re- quirements: we must have earned 200 units of work' taken courses required by law, had suitable instruc- tion on manners and morals, fire prevention, public safety and accident prevention, made at least 120 units with grade C or betterg 45 units earned in the senior year, 30 units of which are C or betterg or a grand total of 130 units of C or better in the four years of high school work. When graduation requirements were adopted, sev- eral years were given to put them completely into operation. With next years graduation class, the ful- fillment of a major earned in one field will be re- quired. Subjects taken in the four years of high school will follow a pattern, rather than be a hodgepodge of various courses. Math Returns to Prominence The war has brought mathematics back into importance. Graduates have found that technical training in the armed forces required the use of a great deal of math they never thought they would need. The scientific world of the future will demand even more knowledge of this subject. ln General Math, our weaknesses were corrected and fundamental skills of arithmetic reviewed. The world of mathematical unknowns was discovered in first and second year Algebra. Geometry, Solid Ge- ometry and Trigonometry dealt with the study of angles and solids. All will aid our thinking and reasoning power. Above. Mr. vl. falxin Funk. mathematics and science division chairman, geome-tr5 algebra, trigonometry. Science, lllatlnematicaf P epar Helow. Mr. XYalter liasting physics, physical science gen llelnw, Mr. J. Miles lloothe, matheinaiics, biology, pliotography. eral inathematics. ser' Science Untangles Nature's Mysteries Learning to form our opinions with facts to back them up is the scientific way we have learned through our science study. This is very important as we will be the future voters and will decide the policies of the nation. WR' have learned that our point of view must be changed when new evidence is produced. The phenomena of nature were uncovered for us in our science courses. In Physical Science and Physics we learned why there are rainbows. rain, blue skies and other puzzling weather changes. The mys- teries of heat. light, and sound were uncovered and the advantages of putting them to work were learned, Chemical structures of solids and chemical formulas were untangled in Chemistry. Witli the strictly scientific world looming higher in the future and the acute need for scientists, our science program has been planned to meet this need. ?vr Scien ti ic We ld :low Nlr. ltirl fnrlson. algebra. lviisiness arithiiietii' li s' i ' , U lI1t'-- Hiuliiiiu. rlillllklry lrallilllq, Q u ina, .Xliove, Mr. VValter .X. There are three types of majors offered for those preparing for business employment. These are accounting. stenography and retailing, There rs ere no retailing courses open this year as we lacked facilities for them. For our accounting major. we were trained in the procedure of recording business transactions. and learned how to construct and analyze financial statements. A working knowledge of pay roll and Social Security accounting was empha- sized. Learning to operate modern bookkeeping :nachines was an important part of this course. With basic' requirements ol' business lowered during the war. our business department set up a curricula to give stenography majors a thorough course in typing and shorthand. ' 2 ..,. N i , has .-Xhoxe. Mr, fharles B. Taylor, English and social studies, division c .air man, senior prohlenis, testing. counselor, American institutions World-wide Viewpoint Developed A study of just what problems confront us in the future was begun when we entered as freshmen. ln our civics classes we learned to adjust ourselves to high school environment and feel that we really belonged to the school. We developed a sense of responsibility toward our school work. World History gave us an introduction of the past to the problems of today. In American History, the development of our country taught us our rights, privileges and responsibilities as future voters. We came to realize the importance of a deeper understanding needed to foster good will among all nations and peoples. Only through this means can a perma- nent world peace be insured. On the eve of our departure from high school we planned for the future in Senior Problems, The question of jobs and further education for each of us was analyzed. Our ability, apti- tude and interests were tested and taken into consideration in the plans. We can face the future only if we know the problems in our way and attempt to overcome them. Our freedom of speech and press gives to us the opportunities that most other countries do not grant their people. In our literature classes. we have learned to appreciate the efforts of suppressed people to voice their ideals. The spirit of America has been felt by the writers of yesterday and today. but it is now up to us to carry on in their footsteps. journalism gave some of us a chance to see our contributions in print. Through the Breeze and the Review many have experienced the thrill of having their efforts published. Many journalists have had their start in our high school and we hope that we. too. may carry on their fine work. fmplaaAiA Placed on I ite ata e wi , fAf', -f 7' K, dj, is. . Some of these are certificated persons and some are not, but all of them perform a necessary service to our school. The cur- riculum of our school must be modified to changing conditions. Since health is a very important part in our education, our health co-ordinator and nurse keeps a close check on our health. The keeping of our records accurately and completely is a function of our Registrars office. The district and student body books, purchasing, and finan- cial records are kept by the Business Office staff, while the main office and the school secretary greet the public and act as the information center. While our minds are fed by books in the library, the cafeteria satisfies our physical self. The gardeners and custodians keep our beautiful plant in tip- top condition. In I Above. We were hindered, however, by the lack of sufficient gym floor space, but were fortunate in securing the temporary use of the Santa Maria Army Air Base gym for our games. The new gym, which is among the first of the building improvements, will certainly be an aid to our ath- letic program. The inability to ob- tain sports equipment made our team one of the poorest equipped of any in the league schools, however, our championships proved our skill. The girls' sports were also hampered, as we were unable to hold our playday get-together, the big event of the year. The first Play Dayu for Santa Maria L'nion High School and junior College girls since 1942, was held March 16, at Santa Barbara State College with fourteen other schools also in participation. The meet, which was to be held May 11 on our home field with Arroyo Grande, San Luis, Paso Robles, Templeton, Lompoc, Cambria and Santa Ynez, was cancelled because of the illness of Miss Alberta Apple. The Santa Maria Point and Letter Club had planned to entertain over three hundred girls that day. Although with the increased sports program few dances have been held, still school spirit has continued at a high level. Several organizations aided the government by collecting old clothes, newspapers, and books. Many more club activities may be held in the future with the building of the new cafeteria. A feature of the new addition will be a clubroom where organizations may eat their lunches and carry on their business meeting which will mean that more bus students may participate in club activities. With the increase in en- rollment, it will be more necessary than ever before to have student or- ganizations, as better cooperation may be obtained by these smaller groups. Last year, we patriotically conserved our finances .ind scarce materials by combining the two books. This year, we have attempted to show every phase of our school life in pictures and we have also used many new ideas, both in layouts and pictorial com- position. Another new feature is pic- turing of individuals in their class sec- tion. This has always been done for the seniors, but with the enrollment increase it was difficult to picture them in one group. With As we look to the future for our theme, we are presenting to you our school and dreams for its future. utA tending Pu6licationA Xluttlxn Ixltt. They also gave several parties and a largely at- tended school dance. The commissioner of buildings and grounds each semester, Alfred Sejera and Richard Thomp- son, acted as the Master Knights, john Adam and Reinhart Rabska, scribes. Our Thespian honor society held several cake sales and raised money for them to take a trip to San Francisco where they were able to see Oklahoma and other stage produc- tions. Combining with the Theater Arts and Radio Broad- casting classes, they presented several radio plays and one- act plays for clubs. Officers of the organizations were Harry Dorsey, fall president: Helen Hatch, vice president, Bonnie Evans, secretary, and Barbara Garrison, treasurer. Helen Hatch, spring president, Ruthe Reed vice president, and Barbara Garrison, secretary-treasurer. Our glee clubs, under the direction of Mr. Harold Sharp, entertained many civic organizations during the year. The highlight of their program year was the Easter Cantata, Victory Divine, by Christopher Marks, presented in cooperation with Mr. Paul Hinant's Theatre Arts class. The glee club members sang the cantata, while the Theatre Arts people acted out the parts. The cantata gave many the opportunity to do solo work and earn their music awards. The glee club was also on the Public Schools Week program and also gave several noon concerts. awfsswalgfw 1 1 was-swf iw' -s-wg. -s -: fx: .1 Wm .7.:u r 2: 'i . I i liimis. By aiding the lj.N.R.R.A. Iiood Relief Program in the processing of six hundred and fifty cans of tomato juice and the boys' Ag. work toward the war effort, our chapter placed seventh in the state food for victory campaign. They also collected seven thousand. five hundred pounds of old clothes for the National Wiir Relief Drive. Their local funds were increased by the sale of hot dogs and cokes during the football season and dress- ing of fifteen pullets for the market. Several members entered their livestock and won awards in the livestock show held in Los Angeles. One member, john Adam, was awarded the State Farmer Degree at an annual convention held in San Luis Obispo. Members took several tours and participated in events held at ranches during the year. Animals raised by the members will also be exhibited at the county fair this summer. Responsible for the smooth opera- tion of the organization for the year was: Claudio Bettiga, president, john Adam, vice presidentg Tom Rice, secretaryg 'Hnde taken bar Mg Bill XX'allace. treasurerg lflah Smith, sergeant at armsg and Roy Smith, reporter. The big event for our Science Club was their first visit to Cal Tech to view the two hundred-inch telescope mirror and the Griffith Planetarium, as guests of the Pasadena Science Cllub in February. They also toured the Santa Maria Army Air Base and Union Sugar Refinery during the year. Their leaders were Wiike Stornetta, fall president: Russell Manning, vice presidentg Gertrude Thornburgh, secretary, Kenneth Payson, treasurer, and 'lack Dyer, publicity chair' man. Spring officers were Paul Palmcluist, president, Dick Welclon, vice presidentg Shirley MCAFCC, secretary, Suzie Mcffartney, treasurerg and Betty Lou Basquez, publicity chairman. The Spanish Club as a group did not have any activities this year, but members of Miss Irene Signorellis Spanish classes held a Spanish party with all the trimmings in December. 5 r Li 5 '04 - , ' 5 A. AQ A slight decline in our enrollment during the War years limited our class activities to the minimum. The boys leaving for the service, and others forced to give up their school- ing to take up employment account- ed for our greatest loss. Many states were represented in our student body by those of us who came with our families to the west coast. Also, our groups were made up of many classes, colors, and creeds. Wfe had a truly representative cross section of the United States population. Our community and school district is anticipating a great increase in pop- ulation as many more opportunities for employment open up. Our ad- niinistration is confident that our enrollment soon will jump to the greatest our school has ever experi- enced. :Q-I At long last the class of 1946 is graduating and we can look back on four years with pride in work well done. The fun of dances, the games, tramp day, the wonderful ban- quet with the prom afterwards, and everything that made the senior year perfect are now behind. This class has had an outstanding record ever since enter- ing school as freshmen when we sold 31,600 in Defense Stamps in co-operation with the War Bond Drive. In our sophomore year we initiated for the first time in the history of the school a Sophomore Jamboree, which was success- fully handled by Chairman Buddy Williams and Mr. John V. Coyne, class adviser. As juniors the class of '46 helped in organizing many drives such as the Red Cross, War Loan, and the Clothing Drive, and were especially re- membered as having put on an outstanding prom for the class of '-15. As seniors the '46-ers led a year full of activities and leadership. A dance, Harvest Festival, a senior Carni- val, winning of the Student Body Plaque, participation in the schools radio program over station KSMA through a Senior Round Table Discussion, and winning of the Med- alist Award by the Breeze as a result of hard work on the part of the senior members of the Quill and Scroll, were among the activities of this ever-busy group. Representing the senior class on the CSF were Martha Ann Danielson, Marilyn Tyler, Elizabeth Dennison, Paul Palmquist, Mary Lou Coleman, Dick Weldon, Wake Stor- netta, Lee Bickmore, Chris Kortner, Bill Hobbs, Peggy Breen, Anna Mae Cossa and Gertrude Thornburgh. Those active in the agricultural department were Claudio Bettiga, John Adam, Bill Wallace and Ulah Smith, who will always be remembered for their untiring work for the F.F.A. organization. The class of 1946 entered to learn and now go forth to serve, confident that we will be able to face and cope with all the problems of the undecided future. It's hard to leave, but so long for now. 46 in-A Zeaale fnaliable Record 5 Offc Ba t lgfi B H a l Waugh 0 l ' i . X Y K . R N, .R ' .Xhove-, left, Fall Senior iers: Elmore ron. 0 Nancy liotlen.
