The purpose of this Year Book is to help us remember. The pictures and remarks that succeed this page are typical of the faculty and students. It is the earnest desire of the staff that they may be a helpful aid to happy remini- scencing in years to come. Since our school mascot is an Indian, we have named our book 'The War Whoop' in token of those first great Americans. By striving together we hope to be sturdy sons and daugh- ters of this great land, as they were before us. ifhjef gf 9 . Fecause he is devoted to the ideals of our scheol, We look up to him. HISTORY OF THE SENIOR CLASS CF :42 DY: Billie dhiflman About the middle of September in 1936 a group of shining faced youngsters of about eleven years crossed the threshold of dear old Santa Fe to be united into what today is known as the Senior Class of 542. This group was made up of youngsters from Arcadia, Alto Loma, Algoa and Mary Austin. The sixth grade room had double seats in it and when Mrs. Spiller, then Miss Tacquard, sat a boy and a girl together a good deal of youth- ful blushing was visible. The following year was filled with just about the most im- portant events of our life. We studied hard so none would be left behind at graduation for that was really a goal in the dis- tance we were striving to attain. Finally the eventful night came. Our salutatorian and valedictorian made their speeches and the class prophecy was read. After the speakers were through, one by one in pastel evening gowns and dress suits we filed by and were presented with our diplomas, a reward well worth the work we had done to acquire them. The beginning of our Freshman class was really exciting, just to be real high school students was enough to cause this, what could have been better? Our Sophomore year passed quietly .interrupted only by a party or two. Then we were juniors! Pens! Parties! Plays! What could be closer to heaven than this? We picked out our pens and then sat 'on needles for about six weeks waiting for them. At last they came and we all went to the Post Office to get them out. Our play, 5Go Slow, Mary,l was a success. But there was never more fun anywhere than at play practice: was there, cast? Our junior-Senior Banquet, say you really should have been there! I just canit describe it more than to say it was wonderful. Oh well, here we are, pretty much dignified in spite of our numerous hardships. Some of our members have been left behind and we have picked up a few but we are nineteen strong. This year with less calmness we received our ringsg all of the class went to the depot to get them. The Alumni Reception went over swell. We worked all one day preparing the foodxbut it was worth it. We are looking forward for more parties and entertainment before our year is over. But standing out above all this is grad- uation. We are all working for that and believe me everyone of us is going to get our diplomas at the same time. If you don't be- lieve me just ask some of the seniors of '42. p N if A M ' ' 'ffmrmf I, . J'-if bf' . Our class was so large that it had to be divided for some subjects, but with a lot of hard work almost all of us graduated. The next year we were Freshmen. We spent that year in really getting acquainted and in adjusting ourselves to high school. We were glad to find that the other students were much more friendly with us. And then comes our Sophomore year. Another grade was added so we are in the tenth grade now. We elected our new principal, Mr. W. N. Lomax, as our spon- sor for this year. Our class officers are: President--Marion McKinley: Vice-President--Harriet johanssong Secretary--Myrtle Hiltbrunner first semester, Lorene Hrncir second semesterg trea- surer--Julia Schwiemg Reporter--Teressa Beaverg Sergeant-at-Arms-- Robert Smith. We have organized a Good Citizenship Club sponsored by our English teacher, Mrs. Winnie Simpso . Officers are elected each month and we meet every Friday and elect the best girl and boy citizens of thegweek. Also this year at the carnival given by the Juniors our re- presentative, julia Schwiem, was elected Queen by penny votes. The King and,Lady-in-Waiting, also Sophomores, were Eugene Craig and Evelyn McCarty. y U l - A We are looking forward with eagerness to the next year when we will be juniors. K . . We soon grew accustomed to Santa Fe and fell into the regular line of routine. We all worked hard, and at the end of school twenty of us graduated into high school. . This year at the beginning of the term there were thirtymfour pupils in our class. We are studying hard and looking forward to the day when we will graduate into the greater school of life. This class, the largest in the history of Santa Fe, was so large that it had to be divided into two groups. Mr. Dorrell and Mrs. Lomax were made home room teachers of the two groups. . The first two weeks of school for the eighth grade was made up of getting acquainted with the other boys and girls, learning the teachers' names, wondering what room to go to at the end of each period, and finding out what the different bells meant By the third week the class was ready to elect officers and to begin the years' work. The officers elected were: presidents, Galen Remmers and jerry Caninenbergg vice-presidents, Jolly French and Priscilla Choate: secretaries, Geraldine Unger and Andrew Rushg treasurers, Melvin Franks and Rosie Tambrellag and reporters, Cecil Beaver and Verda Netter. Miss Ernestine Leonard was elected sponsor. The eighth grade has worked very hard this year, both in studies and in play. The money for the school annual was earned by sponsoring a fish pond at the carnival, and by selling hot cocoa, sandwiches, candy, and popcorn during the noon hour at school. R In the girls' physical education class, the volley ball teams have learned the rules of the game and all of the players have improved very much. Through the guidance and leadership of Mrs. Willingham, eighth grade coach, the girls have learned one of the greatest lessons of all: flt isn't hbw you win or lose, but how you play the game.6. in e of the eighth grade boys are on the junior Basketball Team.' They have played hard and have helped to win the games. During regular physical education class all of the eighth grade boys have had a chance to try their skill at basketball. Mr. Lomax, the coach has helped the boys to understand and gain a knowledge of sportsmanship. ' -- This year has been filled with lasting memories of good times seasoned with hard work, which the class, though it probably will never meet together again as a class, will never forget. IN MEMORY One of our class, Clyde Stavely, was accidently killed this year. Some of us hyd.. V known him only a short while, but-the memory ' of his pleasing manner and happy smile will remain in our hearts forever. , Y ..... ,exif ,Y ,.... l, ,Y ., W, -,lm , ...... ...-....-..,.e,,.- ,M , ,,,-..- ,, l.. Even so, it is fast growing into maturity. The difference between Agriculture and Vocational Agriculture is that in Agriculture the students study from books only, while in Vocational Agriculture the students study from books and, also, get experience by using their hands, and keeping actual records of projects they raise. The boys of this class organized themselves into a club which is called GThe Future Farmers of America.l This is a national or- ganization of boys taking Vocational Agriculture. In this club, the boys may advance in rank if they so desire and work hard. The ranks, beginning at the lowest, are: Green Hand, Future Farmer, Lone Star Farmer, and American Farmer. On February 14, the chapter went to the Houston Fat Stock Show. , . ' This spring the chapter is planning on buying some good feeder calves for the boys who want them. These calves will be cared for by the boys who buy them and may be exhibited in the stock shows in this section next fall and spring. A plan is being made to let the boys borrow money to buy and feed these calves. The money will be paid back when the calves are sold. For this yearis projects the boys have 950 baby chicks, 8 calves for beef, 16 capons, 22M acres of corn, 6 milch cows, 53 fryers, 128 hens for egg production, 8 sows for pig production, 12 pigs for pork, 2 acres of potatoes, M acre vegetables, and 2 acres of feed.
