1 A most rewarding and successful season. The team comprised of eight sophomores and one freshman had a record of 1 2-2. The two losses came unfortunately in league to Whittier 3- 1 and La Serna 4-9. This team is the most experienced of the three teams and play very well for being so young. This team will be our varsity team for 1974. ' 74 should be a good year for waterpolo at Santa Fe High School. Front: Ian Panek, Stacy Dodson, Kevin Nakagawa, Gilbert Ochoa. Back; Mat Rhodes, Steve Palaro. Kurt Fisher. Mike Stanhoff. The team ' s overall record was 5-9. The team was composed of freshman just learning the game. Most of the members of the team developed a game sense and should be a successful J. v. team next year. The highlight of the season would have to be the win over Troy High in the Monte Vista Frosh-Soph Tournament. Santa Fe won the consolation championship. Front; Dennis Drake. Joe Castro, Steve Porter, Herbert Crowther. Back; Perry Curtiss, Terry Barnhard, Randy Buzzo, Jim Curtiss. Charley Seamen.

maapam Diverse thoughts were being contemplated at the beginning of this season. The student body was doubtful of a third winning dynasty, while the wrestlers had hopes of attaining prestige and partaking of another league championship. Mr. Rick Sowers (head coach) and Mr. David Lopez (assistant coach) questioned whether they could promote another winning attitude. All doubts disappeared as another undefeated season went underway, one of which the student body, wrestlers and its coaches can be proud. Outstanding talent was shown by all team members and especially by heavyweight Ron Ortiz He destroyed three of four opponents he faced in the CIF wrestling prelims at the end of the season. He was the only qualifier for the wrestling league finals and placed second. Ruben Lopez. Santa Fe ' s undefeated (24-0) 136 lb. wrestler, was seated in the prelims but could not participate because of a broken shoulder acquired during practice the week before. The seniors on the team, Richard Crowell, Frank Martinez. Ray Mades and Ruben and Ron will have memories of helping bring the team recognition as league champs. The coaches gave outstanding leadership to the well rounded team. Coach Sowers, originator of the winning dynasty, put more effort into this season than some coaches put into two or three All year long his mind was on winning; who will be the team ' s toughest opponents; who is the best at each weight category and how to keep all the wrestlers down to weight and out of trouble. Coach Sowers completed a |ob that can be remembered with pride. He promoted a winning spirit, gave reassurance when needed, and inspired the team with a fierce desire to be number one. Coach Lopez did likewise all the way while coaching J.V. to their second year league championship right beside the Varsity team. Next year looks very promising with Paul Sevillano, Marco Mendez, Dean Busk. Chris Bonilla. Mario Polanco, Jim and Chris Cain, Jose Jorkin and Scott Folsom coming back with Varsity experience. It should be another great year with Santa Fe having a fourth league championship on their hands.
