fastest Soplhiorrirtore in the Lll..S.,A.. Sal Peralta started running for Cross Country as a freshman. His first competition began with the California Invitational, where he broke the freshman record. When league cross country began he was able to establish himself as one of the two best runners in the Vvhitmont League. Sal con- tinued to work out during the summer, competing in a number of invitational meets. Now, as a sophomore he surprised everybody by setting 1 1 new course records. He was easily the league cross country champ and finished second in the AAA division beaten only by Notre Dame's Brian Russell, a senior, in the finals at Mt. Sac. As a result he was invited to the Sunkist Invitational Track Meet at the Sports Arena. lt was Sal's first time running in an invitational featuring world class performers. l-lowever he sur- prised everyone, running a meet record 4110.6 to win his race. The clocking broke the national sophomore record of 4115.6 set in 1975. He hopes to run under 4:10 mile and possibly break 9:00 in the two-mile by the end of the 1976 track season.
