The band is an institution at Santa Cruz High School, a standing tradition which 1n many ways has more of a responsibility than any other organized group at the school. We not only represent Santa Cruz High locally, and year round, but travel thousands of miles each year to represent our community! If we fail to do our best, we are failing Santa Cruz as a whole But that has seldom been the case over the past 51 years, and we always carry that name which brings for us respect and enthusiasm--the SANTA CRUZ l-HGH SCHOOL BIG RED BAND! above, for the awards ceremony af- ter a long day of marching and sun at the Santa Cruz Band Review in October. Our majorettes, right, had a great year, winning many honors and trophies of their own. After over a year of extremely hard work, the Band Boosters, together with the band, raised roughly 3520, OOO to pur- chase much-needed new tmiforms. The uniforms, however, are not pic- tured here due to them arriving late in the school year. All kinds of fund raisers were held to raise the annual expense money for travel. They in- cluded pizza nights, selling T-shirts, bake sales, an auction, etc. The trophies, pictured to the right below with drum major Ron Salinas, are those won by the band in the fall of 1977: YYW,f 5, - fff--f.. sea. ..,. The Drama Group is a non-profit theatrical com- pany. Many of the members are enrolled in Theatre Arts I or Il. The purpose of the Drama Group is to train the members in the technical and creative aspects of the stage. We put on two to three produc- tions every year. It's a great stepping stone for bigger and better stage productions. Everyone participates in the productions. There are many positions to fill other than actingg costume, make-up, lights, set, publicity, etc. It is a rewarding and enjoyable experience. To do so, the students use laps, an independent study program, to learn the skills that will be required of them in that job, or one closely related to it. Students are also encouraged to enrich their growth by joining DECA Conference, where they are encouraged to compete against other students who are interested in the same line of work, by taking proficiency tests that are randomly chosen from the same laps that th they had been working on at school. This year the State DECA Conference was held in Venturag ten went and enjoyable tIip many of us were motivated to prepare our- selves enough to win an award next year, and we too, look forward to the dances and other fun activities that are provided. California Redwood Here among the mansions of trunk, Bewildering tallness, Magnified green, Rugged red and Outstretched shade, I sit and lean on pulsing strength, My cushion covered by Lost jewels shed, Eyes wandering to lofty heights, Until they glimpse a pinhole peak. Lorraine Rice TRIDE T KEPT US INFORMED A small but vigorous staff worked diligently this year to publish our monthly school paper, plus many special editions. The Trident, under the advise- ment of Myrna Britton, is gaining a highly commend- able reputation among high school newspapers. The paper has recently taken such high honors as a 2nd place in a national contest, and the staff often attends conferences such as one in San Francisco. We are proud of our Trident, which stands as a valuable as- set to om' school and is supported by the local com- munity. 7 at W 1..- ,.-if ia-W 'R Front: Diane Hatcher, john Hodge, 2nd row: Richard Ellis, Chuck Yaryan, 3rd row: Mrs. Britton, Clara Weygandt, Back: Guy Blau, john Beiers, john Brooke u 'A V' lf 1 'QJ uv ,Wy a- DECA Club Front row, Pres. It's an emotion building up inside of you which makes you feel happy and warm. It's expressing pride and supporting some- thing you are proud of. Cheering is a way of showing that pride. Whether cheering for your school football or basketball teams, it'S Showing that you care. When the athlete hears the spirit of the roaring crowds, he can feel the sincerity of their support. This year's varsity team had one re- turning player, Laurie Thomas, 2 players up from J.V., Cindy jackson and Phina Alvarez, and 3 new players, Loreen Cuidici, Cindy Becker, and Kelly Wright. Due to this, a lot of time and effort went into mastering basic volleyball skills as Well as learning offensive and defensive The starting team consisted of Shelle Bogard, Melissa Marott, Renee Staub, Liz Wainscoat, Pat Wainscoat, and Salena As the season progressed, an increase in the skill level was quite evident. Both teams be- came teams rather than groups of individuals. This was evident from the number of balls that were set up and spiked rather than just sending the ball back on one hit. The varsity came in 4th, while the LV, team came in 3rd. Weaver. positioning. The J'.V. team, like the var- sity, was mainly composed of sophomores. However, in the second meeting between the two schools, the Santa Cruz girls played brilliantly and lost by a very narrow score of 4-3. Highlights during the season included a mid-season four game win- ing sneak, two out of three victories against Harbor, a narrow one oint win at Soquel and a close, but unsuccessful try at Aptos. Rusty Locatelli and Eric Forgaard consistently provided the offensive .ve fire -power with long-range bombs. Geoff Girard ontributed immeasurably day in and day out. Tennis 1978 HAS STRONG SEASON ?1'r 1' rw-Ga' 7 7 as if Surfing Team Makes Debut Surfing in Santa Cruz has finally broken into the field of approved competitive sports. Coached by Bob Pearson, a local professional surfer, the team competed mostly with schools from Los Angeles. Practice was after school as the surf per- mitted, P.E. credit was given each student for participating in the sport. Hopefully other local schools will produce teams and allow competition.
