All of us are citizens of a great nation and a great state. However, we live our daily lives in our community - Santa Cruz. Nature has given us a beautiful setting, but our community is not composed of mountains, redwoods, beech and ocean. It is made up of people. The manner in which we live our daily lives, either in unselfish cooperation for the general welfare or otherwise, will determine the desirability of our community as a place to live. The mountm.ns, the redwoods and the ocean were here before we came and will be here after we are gone. I In confident that your daily experiences in living and working together at Santa Cruz High will be of great value as you take your place in the larger community of Santa Cruz or elsewher . Sincerely, Homer H. Cornick HOMER H. CORNICK H City Superintendent of Schools :Slu m 621mg 69655 sinful .S--4'2-vG-M-- Santa Cruz High School students and faculty, as well as the entire community, were suddenly faced with a tremendous problem of readjustment last April 29, When our main building was ordered closed, we saw an excellent example of cooperation in meeting the problem. Mission Hill and Branclforte Junior High Schools immediately went on double sessions at Branciforte, leaving Mission Hill building open for high school use. High school classes resumed their normal course on two campuses. Yet there was little complaining. Students and teachers alike cheerfullw went about the business of wmbumtmsmwlwmwwmmumwimummmm The same has been true during the present year. With temporary classrooms and portable buildings for housing, the student body has been most cooperative. School has operated smoothly because everyone has worked to make it so. Ability to adjust to new and different conditions is a valuable trait. The entire school community is to be congratulated on the manner in which this problem has L. 513 sms Principal been met. Although the Redbirds lacked the depth to carry many meets, there were some really outstanding per- farmers. The Varsity relay team of Nick Pagnini, Al Fehn, Gary Bryan, and Bud Simmons threatened the SCHS relay record. Howie Adams had pole valuted ll' 4 and was steadily improving at the time this was written. Sophomores Leroy Cross and Dave Tanner looked good in the 440 and show much potential. Pagnini in the 100 and 220 dashes, Sim- mons in the broadiump, Fehn in the 440 and 880, and Dave York in the mile also did their share. The Cardlets had many fine aspirants with Bert Bly and Tom Silva looking great. Bly set records in the 330 while Silva set new records in the 75 and 150 yard dashes. Not to be outdone by his team mates, Ed Forbes was the best in the CCAL in -the 1320 and set new school records also. zz' I A : it . ..
