He has foughf in fwo greaf wars in which mass cruelfy, hafred, and persecu- fion became more rampanf fhan ever before in hisfory. Sociefy has developed a complexify which makes if difficulf for man fo undersfand his own fimes. The advanfages of a complefe educafion did nof seem foo obvious fo fhe young man of fhe pasf generafion. He did nof realize fhaf in order fo deal successfully wifh our complex modern sociefy an expanded poinf of view was essenfial. For him, fhe problems of how fo promofe infernafional unify, build democracy and esfablish peace did nof yef have any real meaning. Thus when confronfed wifh fhese problems he was nof successful in solving fhem. The pasf generafion was, in general, noi prepared for ifs fufure. No generafion needs awakening more fhan ours: for fhe problems of fhe esfablishmenf of infernafional unify, democracy, and peace have passed info our hands. We can eifher provide fhe solufion or go under. lf we fail, man is losf. Therefore, each of us musf dedicafe himself fo falxe an acfive rafher fhan a passive inferesf in being educafionally pre- pared fo build a beffer world. We musf nof fail our fufure.
