The chief proiecf of The As- sociafion, however, for fhe lasf few years, has been fhe esfablishmenf and furfherance of fhe scholarship fund which was founded in l93O, af which fime no name had been chosen for if. Buf in i932 The fund was given fhe 'rifle of fhe Charles W. Townsend Memorial Scholarship Fund in memory of fhe lafe C. W. Townsend, principal of Sanfa Clara High School. Af fhe fime fhe fund was esfablished every faculfy member in fhe Sanfa Clara school sys- fem confribufed a cerfain amounf fo add fo if. Alumni were asked fo give whaf fhey could, also, fo furfher fhe proiecf. 1 Sihce l93O, insfead of a class giff fo fhe school, fhe senior classes have given fhe pro- ceeds of fheir annual dramafic presenfafions fo be added fo fhe scholarship fund. ln l932 fhe seniors also gave fhe profifs made fhrough fhe sale of candy af fhe senior play. Lasf year fhe Parenf-Teachers Associafion and The Sanfa Clara Alumni Associafion cooperafed fo hold a whisi' parfy in fhe Liffle Theafre for fhe benefif of fhe scholarship fund. Again fhis year. on May 22, fhe Parenf-Teachers Associa- fion and fhe Alumni Associafion collaborafed in giving a whisf parfy. Alumni had charge of fhe prizes and sale of ficlcefs. One-half of fhe pro- O ceeds of fhe whisf parfy wenf info fhe scholar- ship fund. x ln June of lasf year Wilda lvlerrif, Leona Prueff, and Alberf Casfro were awarded scholar- ships made possible fhrough fhe Charles W. Townsend Memorial Scholarship Fund. Scholar- ships presenfed each year are payable upon fhe winner's regisfrafion in a college or universify. ln previous years only fwo scholarships had been given in one year, one fo a boy and one fo a girl. LaTer in The year, on May IO, The class presenTed The 9 play, NoThing BuT The TruTh. AlThough only eleven seniors were in The casT oT The comedy, The oTher seniors Tool: parT by selling TiclceTs. The proceeds Trom The play were Turned over To The C. W. Townsend Memorial Scholarship Fund. Through The cooperaTion oT each oT The seniors, The class was able To place success aTTer boTh The dance and The dramaTic presenTa- Tion. s In The middle oT May The class Took oTT a day Trom Their usual sTudies To hold Their class picnic aT Club Almaden. Besides The much deserved recreaTion, The sTudenTs claimed a quanTiTy oT poison oak and sunburn. However, They -expecT To remember The enioymenT much longer Than The misery oT The accompanying resulTs. The'dUTe Tor The picnic was Friday. May I7. -. On Thursday, June I3, The one hundred and TiTTeen seniors will receive Their diplomas aT The 1935 CommencemenT exercises. ' FRESHMAN RECEPTION The Freshman Recepfion, held in fhe gym, on Ocfober 5, feafured a courf scene for fhe inifia- fion. Senfences were pronounced upon fhe offen embarrassed vicfims requiring fhem fo perform before fheir amused audience of upper classmen, faculfy members, and relafives. Dancing, wifh music provided by fhe jazz orchesfra, followed. Under fhe guidance of Miss Levisfon, general chairman, sfudenfs who helped fo make fhe affair a success were Kennefh Allen, Bill Winans, Mar- cella Raffo, Pefer Gauder, Rufh O'Neil, and Chesfer Burns. Ofher faculfy members who worked for fhe success of fhel Recepfion were Miss Price, Mr. Moore, Mr. Michaelson, Mr. Sanders, Miss Uriell, Miss Sfeinharf, Mr. Johnson, and Mr. Knaus. THE MOTHERS' TEA The Mofhers' Tea, always one of fhe loveliesf evenfs of fhe year, was held in fhe gymnasium on May 8, under fhe direcfion of fhe Girls' League. The rnofhers of all fhe sfudenfs were invifed fo affend. A musical and dance program was given by members of fhe League. The gym was decorafed in spring colors and flowers. 5 In fhe receiving line were fhe Girls' League officers and faculfy members. , JUNIOR PROM One of fhe class dances held fhis year was fhe semi-formal iunior-senior prom which was suc- cessfully sponsored by fhe iuniors. The dance was held on May 29 in honor of fhe graduafing class of '35. The school jazz orchesfra provided fhe dance music. 47 EXHIBIT The annual school exhibif was held near fhe end of fhe school year. ln fhe audiforium a musical program was given, under fhe direcfion of Mr. Harmon, in conjuncfion wifh fhe exhibi- fion of finished proiecfs in fhe various deparf- menfs. In fhe machine and wood work shops were many proiecfs which required hours of concen- frafed efforf by fhe boys fo produce. In fhe arf deparfmenf, proiecfs were displayed in posfers, pencil, pasfel, ink, plasfer casfing, linoleum block prinfing, wood cuffing, and wafer color work, and design. Visifors in fhe cooking room received punch and cookies fhaf were made by fhe girls in fhe various cooking classes.
