My image of you was strict, scholarly and a little unkind. You were an authority figure like the written law, with cold hard facts, and no exceptions. My second year of high school, I thought I knew it all. I lashed out at you with mocking rebellion, but deep inside I had no harmful intentions. The barrier between the students and the teachers be- gan to break down, and I saw you as a person with feelings. A slight change began to take place, but I didn't fully acknowledge it yet. As I moved on to my third year I realized what a learning exper- ience my past two years had been. Right away I recognized the change between us. We became friends, and began to talk easily with one another. I learned that your comments were not meant to criticize but rather to motivate. Through your discipline and strength I've learned valuable habits that will contribute to a successful future. As a senior at the peak of my high school years, l'd like to say thanks, My rebellious ways and arroganace were a lot to put up with. You are a freind who will be in my heart today, tomorrow, and always. I've seen that being a teacher takes a great amount of patience and conscious effort. You deserve full credit. Thank you. He entered his Junior year here at Santa Clara, and found Things to be quite differ- ent from his hometown in Spain. Although schools in Madrid are in session for seven to eight hours a day, Luis found the rules and homework requirements to be more strict here. In spite of the unfamiliar setting, Luis managed to make friends very quick- ly. While he was here, he ate pizza for the first time, and went to his first football game. He enjoyed his stay in Oxnard and his time at Santa Clara, but he missed his family and girlfriend at home. With the reality of senior year rapidly approaching, the juniors went through a great deal of anxiety and stress throughout the year. Due dates piled up. and it became a frantic race to meet them. Term papers, book reports, homework, tests, and afterschool activities were sometimes shoved into a one week period, which led to stu- dent burn-out. The stress be- gan after the realization that the junior year is given consid- erable weight on college od- missions. Requirements needed to be met, counseling was set up, and taking the P.S.A.T.'s and S.A.T.'s were contended with. The juniors found all of their time disappearing. and searched for relief from the strain of school. lt was all for the good of the future, but it sure took away from the present. You've developed your own bribery system, and you know just what gets them. But when that strategy fails, it's time to turn to your older brother or sister. You'll beg, plead, or cry, what- ever it takes to get a ride to the movies or the mall. But finally your time has come, your 'ibth birthday is here, and Freedom is sitting on your doorstep. Now all you have to do is go get your license! Once you've conquered that driving test, the skys the limit for fun, free- dom, and fancy living. There's a feeling of supremacy when you're out on the road. As you cruise through town with a full tank, dark shades and radio blar- ing, that confident smile shows good times are up ahead. But eventually driving becomes more than pedestrian target practice. The road is dangerous QAfter all, your friends are out there toolj. Protecting that spark- ling new paint job becomes a task in itself. Some people learn the hard way that burnin' rubber and showin' off ultimately takes its toll. The cool shades, the sassy smiles, and the tough paint jobs are all classic details of rookie dri- vers turnin' big league. And no matter what you did or how you did it, it made your sophomore year extremely outrageous. Most clubs are formed to present an opportunity for the students to get more involved in school. There are three types of clubs: the first is a group formed to let the students work ln producing something that they can take pride in. The Drama Club puts on a Talent Show and a few plays each year. while improving the acting abilities of its members. The Pep Club keeps school spirit and student participation running high. ASB, along with the student Senate, arranges all activities and helps the school run smoothly. The Band, just recently revived, performs at rallies and games. The second type of organizations are the exclusive clubs for students who are accomplished in certain areas. Students who excell in academics are brought together in CSF, an honorary organization. Those who have earned their letter in any sport may belong to the Varsity or Letterman's Club. The final type of organization is for those with special interests. People who enjoy working with computers can learn more about them and practice their uses through the Computer Club. Anyone taking French l,2, or 3 is able to join the French Club, and those people who are interested in. or have a talent for public speaking belong to the Speech Club. Specifically, all of these clubs have very distinct purposes, each one being a special, unique group. But taken together. clubs enrich and complete a high school education. Our cheerleading squad this year consisted of 8 JV and 7 Varsity members. Together we supported Santa Clara's football and basketball teams throughout the 4985-86 school year. We practiced 3 times a week to perfect cheers and routines for the games and rallies. Promoting spirit was hard work, but we were success- ful! We made boutonnieres for team members, and hung posters at games and at school to encourage and support our most cherished teams. By running the pep-rallies, developing skits, games, and cheers to en- tertain the student body, we were able to boost confi- dence and show our support not only for our players, but for our school. We owe a special thanks to our moderator, Mrs. Linda Fuchs for her ideas and support all year. We also owe a lot of thanks to the student body. Their support for S.C. kept us motivated and without them, success would have been impossible. Looking back, the hard work and extra time we put in was all worth it. We were honored to be a part of Santa Clara during its successful year in sports. -Susan Santangelo Right: ls that a pose by Shannon Yanez, or is that o pose? Either by paint, charcoai, or pen, art is anextension of a person and his talents. it is a message from his heart expressed through his hands. The artistic works in the next few pages reflect the mood of the individual. Some of the pieces seem humorous and light. while others might have a more serious tone. No matter what mood they generate, they leave a distinct impression on us. Art allows a person to express himself to us. We are then able to see and feel his thoughts through certain words, colors, and images that have been chosen. Even without the physical presence of the artist, we are able to get to know that person because his work speaks for him.
