at Santa Clara. Monsignor Jacobs Welcomes Sister Mary Robert-new Vice'PrincipaI-to Santa Clara. June 1, 1964 My dear Seniors, It is commonplace to say, that we live in a time of change. We all know this and we think particularly of the changes in science and technology, which differentiate our age from the past. There are other changes, however, that set our time apart from former centuries and that would engage the attention of our forefathers, if they could look in on us today. The late Pope John XXIII in his great Encyclical Pacem in tetris says, that our time is characterized by three great changes. The working classes have been lifted, he says, to a status of freedom and equality with the employer in the socio-economic field. Women have achieved their rightful place in public life, especially in countries with Christian background. Finally many nations have gained their independence in recent years and the time is now in sight, that the old division between ruling nations and subject nations will no longer exist. The Holy Father signalizes these changes in a spirit of optimism as being in harmony with the law of nature and the Spirit of Christ's teaching in the Gospel. It has been said, that Pope John was too optimistic in his appraisal of modern life and not sufficiently realistic about the dangers that are imminent. Unbelief is on the increase, people say, de-Christianization of modern life is appalling and Communism is gaining ground. We stand on the brink, they shout. One foot further and we tumble into the precipice. Such people present quite a vivid picture of the evils of our day, but they simultaneously belittle the natural law and the great social teachings that are implied in the Gospel. The real danger is not so much the evils that oppose us, but our own lack of confidence and appreciation of our means. If you are getting a bit impatient with my dissertation at this point, you may say: What has all this to do with my graduation? Well, just this. Changes in life are bound to come and our time has more of them than almost any other, Some of these are bad, but others we must recognize as good. If these changes were just a blind and meaningless drift toward a dark future, we would have no reason to congratulate you today and look at your future with confidence and optimism. But we do congratulate you and we do have confidence and allow ourselves a certain measure of optimism, because the changes that frighten us, are set against a back-drop of great and lasting truths and principles and laws, about which you have learned at Santa Clara. When the Apostles saw the fury of the storm on lake Genesareth, they be- came frightened and forgot that Christ was guiding the boat. Why are you fearful said our Lord O you oi little faith. Your future will be secure and your happiness assured, if your Christian faith and upright conduct guided by that faith, will lead you on. Very sincerely yours , iffmfr- W
