MAGNIFICAT My soul doth magnify the Lord, And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Savior. For He hath regarded the humility of His handmaid, for hehold from henceforth all generations shall call me hlessed. For He that is mighty hath done great things unto me and holy is His name. And His mercy is from generation to generation, unto them that fear Him. He hath shown strength with His arm, He hath scattered the proud in the conceit of their heart. He hath put down the mighty from their seat and hath exalted the humhle. He hath filled the hungry with good things, and the rich He hath sent empty away. He hath received Israel, His servant, heing mindful of His mercy. As He spoke unto our fathers, to Ahraham and to his seed forever. IN MEMURIIIM PIIPE PIUS XII RT. REV. MSGR. ANTHONY J. JACOBS, V. F. f5wb -e X tk 1-M-we Semis Clara Church 323 E Street Oxnard, California June M, l959 My dear Seniors, The day you have waited for so long has now become a reality and we, your elders and teachers, understand your joy and satisfaction, we congratulate you with all our hearts on eaching this goal, because your high school diploma signifies a public acknowledgement that satisfactorily completed your secondary studies also signifies that you have now reached a form maturity that imparts personal responsibility. I do not mean to say that your education is now Whether you go on to college or find employment have many things to learn. ln fact, the person you have and it of complete. you will who stops learning at any time during his life, places himself in the unhappy position of relinguishing his intellect, one the greatest faculties given to him by God. of I do mean, however, that with due caution and with respect for the judgement of people with more experience, you will be expected to judge independently, to assume responsibilities of importance and to make your own way in life. Some are fearful of this independent position. In the case of young people the matter is often taken too lightly, particularly when we consider that the most important decisions, such as those of vocation, career and marriage, must necessarily fall during this period, Yet there should be no occasion for either alarm or immature judgement about these all-important matters, if you keep close to the things you have learned and the example you have received. Remember that you have responsibilities not only toward yourselves but also toward others, who are endowed with the same basic rights. Remember that you owe a great debt to your parents, who have been and now are and always will be your greatest well-wishers, Remember most of all that God is our common Father and that all things must be begun through Him and also through Him ended. League and then went all the way to the semi-finals of the C.l.F. Northern Division Play-offs. With practically the entire first team returning from the previous year, the rugged Saints were pre-season favorites to win the league. After disposing of Camarillo in their opener, S.C. went on to victory over Carpinteria High School, a team which the Saints had never before been able to beat. Next, St. John Vianney, stiff competitors of the rough Parochial League, fell before the confident Saints. Said Coach Machado concerning the game, This is the first time a Santa Clara team has fallen behind and still maintained a desire to win. The Saints proved unbeatable with opening of league competition. What made them that way? Two factors, tl! desire, and C25 the coaching of John Machado and Lou Cviianovich, who not only stressed football but also demanded high morals, sportsmanship, good study habits, and gentlemanliness. Going into C.l.F. competition, the Saints fought off a fine San Luis Obispo Mission team for a hard-earned 20-14 victory but lost to a powerful eleven from Needles. Seven players from the '58 squad obtained all-league honors and two, Nico Escamilla and Mark Pinedo, were named to the all-C.l.F. team. The Mustangs eliminated S.C. in the semi-finals of the CIF playoffs. The Saints did not give up though and somewhat contained the Mus- tanges for three periods. Nico Escamilla scored the only Saint touchdown midway through the second quarter. The defeat gave the Saints a final record of nine wins and one loss. The Santa Clara Junior Varsity football team gradually showed signs of greatness as they learned that playing as a team was far more important than playing as individuals. Coming to high school from different grammar schools, at first the JV's found it difficult to play as a team but through good coaching they realized that the winning way was the team way. Twice the JV's beat Villanova and once they tied with Simi's JV's. From this squad will come our stars of tomorrow. YV cut Q K si ,N 3 J X f I 5 f Z f ff? Santa Clara 1958-59 Varsity Basketball team enjoyed a fine season. Mr. Cvijanovich's first S. C. team captured the coveted C. I. F. championship. Making all-league were versatile forwards Dick laquez and Nick Escamillag rebound aces Tony Caputo and Steve Miller. Miller was named to the first-team all-C. I. F. For the first time in its basketball history, Santa Clara was able to defeat Oxnard High School. Coach Cvijanovich remarked after the victory: This was a team victory made possible only by the boys playing as a unit, not as individuals. This unity among the players continued through the season. Going into C.l.F. competition, the Saints were figured to re- main in the contest as far as the quarterfinalsg there they would go down in defeat before Bishop High as they had done the pre- vious year. This was not to be done. Undaunted by odds, the Saints walloped Bishop, pre-favorite Ramona, and Trona to cap- ture the C.l.F. Class A Crown. Our hats off to a great basketball team! All-league selections were Phil Kelley, Armando Ochoa and Tom Gill. Tom finished the season playing for the varsity. For the first time, the B's defeated 0xnard's B team. All of the team played great ball in securing the victory.
