N S T R u C IT D DR. EINAR W. JACOBSEN Superintendent of Santa Barbara City Schools ESE HllUHllElllS HELPED Behind the varied courses and numerous activities car- ried on at Santa Barbara High School lies a design-a design that is an important part of the larger plan for the physical, mental, spiritual, and social growth of every boy and girl in the Santa Barbara City Schools. Back of this design lie innumerable hours of careful thought and planning by the people who have assumed the responsibility for seeing that the blueprint tor growth be- comes a reality. With some of these people we have so little direct contact that we are scarcely aware of the vital part they play in the lite of our high school. mam Members of the Board of Education of the Santa Barbara City Schools are, from left to right: Mr. C. E. Sovinep Mrs. Katherine McCloskey, Mr. Lawrence Parma, president, Mr. Yale Griffith, vice president, and Mr. Bruce O'Neal. Chief architects ot the total design are the superintendent of schools and the board of education. Representing the townspeople ot Santa Barbara, the five elected members of the board, who serve without pay, meet twice a month with the superintendent and his assistant to plan the policies for the entire school system, The assistant super- intendent is in charge of business and maintenance, while the director ot second- ary education coordinates the work of the junior and senior high schools. MR. GEORGE BROWN DR. CHARLOTTE ELMOTT Assistant Superintendent ot Dmector of Secondary Education Schools DESIGN UUR llllUllES TO THE CLASS OF 1952 The faculty and staff of Santa Barbara High School wish for each of you a full measure of success as you con- tinue with your training and education and take positions of responsibility in home, community, and business relation- ships. We count on you to uphold the ideals of our school and of the institutions of our country. Through sincere serv- ice to your fellow men you will be extending the fine tradi- tions and the good name of Santa Barbara High School. We are sure you will always be grateful to your parents and to the community for making possible the fine opportu- nities that you have had, HARVEY J. HOLT Principal Familiar to all of us are the designers in our own school: our principal, who is responsible for the administration of the school, the vice principal, who supervises Student Body activities and the Boys' League, the dean of girls, who counsels girls and sponsors the Girls' League, the counselors, and--basis and strength of the entire design-our teachers. i ' These, then, are the planners and guides, ready to help us translate the design for growth into our own design for successful living. MISS FRANCES A GOWER DR LEONA Dean of Girls Vice Mr. John Nordensor' served as administrative assistant to the principal, while Mr John Greene head counselor, assumed many duties formerly delegated to the registrar. Judy's last year at high school, like that of most senior girls, was packed with activities and fun. Being pep leader with Bette Saunders and Shirley Betts took up much of her time, as there were always pom- pons to make and new routines to learn, but Judy also found time for other activities, such os Tri-I-li-Y and Usherettes. Like many other students, she promenoded the halls in the morning, frequented the Student Body room, and spent the noon hour with her friends on the front lawn. After school she often headed for the public library to do a serious job of studying. Her home activities were typical too. She carried on lengthy tele- phone conversations, kept up a bulletin board which recorded every event in her life at SBHS, and started off to school every morning loaded down with books while her dog Shep watched wistfully from the porch. Like hundreds of other girls, Judy enjoyed chocolate sundaes, parties, the Blue Onion after the movies, the beach, and donces. Her big- gest thrill, though hardly typical, was being chosen May Queen by the Boys' League to top off a wonder- ful year. Studies . . . friendships . . . activities . . . fun . . . these made up the design for living of our typical senior girl. lllPlUHl Sflllllll Bllll A handy man with a megaphone, a ping pong paddle, or a hammer is our typical senior boy, Dave Garno. A familiar figure to Don fans, Dave served SBHS as yell leader this year, helping to generate that well-known school spirit before the rooting section and as a member of the Program and Rally Committee. Like many other senior boys, Dave spent many of his evenings grinding out homework, which he abandoned willingly in favor of tele- phone conversations and subsequent activities. When his eyes began to droop he made a beeline for the kitchen to indulge in his favorite pastime-raiding the refrigerator. He admitted liking any type of food at any time of the day or night. Typically, Dave had little spare time, but he enjoyed tinkering with radios and motors in the time he did have. Membership in a Y club and on the Hi-Y Council claimed part of Dave's time. Free week-end afternoons were spent at the Rec, playing ping pong with some of the high school QQ . if students who gathered there A' ' QM and-ah, yes-eating? Dave was also a big shot in ROTCFQS a member of the Rifle Team, that is- and served as executive offi- cer for Company C. The weekly RO free day found him among the first in the pool, happily dunking fellow officers in an entirely typi- cal manner-very much in the swim at SBHS, 4' DICK ACRES born Santa Barbara actrvrtres STUDENT COURT HEARD APPEALS A small notation at the bottom of any deputy citation reads. lt is your privilege to appear before Student Court within the next two school days. A few of our students found that it is a privilege to appear before an unbiased group and defend themselves against a false or mistaken accusation. All such decisions or penalties were carefully weighed and handed down by the court, which was composed of Chief Justice Margaret Ross and eight associate justices. DEPUTIES ENFORCED SCHOOL RULES That friendly tap on the shoulder, a broad smile, and a little yellow slip of paper made known to erring students that the deputy force was on the job. Students serving in this capacity volunteered for the positions and were rewarded with the knowledge that they were accomplishing something for the welfare both of the school and the students. The students of Santa Barbara High School and many of the other Don fans were espe- cially proud of the fine coaching done by San- ta Barbara's new head football coach, Louie Tsoutsouvas. Opening their season against the well remembered Loyola team, who defeated them in the CIF semi-finals last year by one point, the Dons got revenge by winning, 7 to O. On September 28, the game with John Muir of L.A. was decided in the last three minutes when Santa Barbara's Sal Herrera went over from the 18 yard line to win the game 13 to 7. After dropping Gardena, 26 to 7, and win- ning from Burroughs High School of Burbank, 21 to 13, the Santa Barbarans met their first defeat at the hands of the Mustangs from North Phoenix, coming out on the bottom of the pile, 13 to O. Getting back on the victory trail, the grid- sters next met and defeated L. A. Jordan, 12 to O. But it was in the game with the San Fer- nando Tigers that the Dons really showed their mettle. After trailing 6-O through the first quarter, the Vaqueros put on a three touchdown rally and went on to win, 21 to 6. To qualify for the playoffs, a win against undefeated Ventura was necessary. Twice dur- ing the game the hard fighting Santa Barbara team led the Preps, but when the final gun went off the Dons ended their season on the short end of the 21 to 12 score. 113 DONS IN ACTION . d I ome lost mmute ocraon os he Above: Bob Harmon :sp cys s puts o stop fo o would-be scorer for John Munr Below: Joy of o furst-gome truumph was seen o Dons os they won over Loyola 7 to O. The tournament, test of Southern California Bee teams, was handcuffed by the Don Bees in the all-important final game, in which Coach Bud Revis' boys thoroughly out-classed Atascadero in an easy triumph. Regular season play showed that the tournament was just added proof of the Vaquero superiority. A record of l8 and 2 verifies this. The string of victories was broken by the East Bakersfield Blades. The Revismen then were headed toward a one-defeat season until a fateful trip to the Santa Clara gym for a game against the Yellowjackets which wound up in a rout. A week later, though, Oxnard fell before a highly inspired group of Dons. This was the first of four victories which netted the Santa Barbarans the winner's trophy. Swimming fundamen- tals were part of the regular physical education instruction and all boys participated. The class was divided into two sections, the beginners and the advanced group, with Mr. Charles Sylvester and Mr. Gates Foss Sr. instructing. The beginners were given extra instruction on the fundamen- tals of swimming and the ad- vanced class was taught the fine points of the sport. For added safety, two lifeguards were present at all times. Along with the regular PE. program, there was after- school swimming. At this time, the life saving classes were held. Future plans for this popu- lar sport include the formation of a swimming team for inter- scholastic competition. At the present time, the physical edu- cation classes are cooperating with the Boys' League in spon- soring an interclass swim meet, Top: As part of the program, individual instruction in fundamentals of swimming is given.
