It Wasn't going to be her cruise, but someone came up lame. LOGRON said we need a ship, to fill the AE nook. We had to sail to Souda Bay, to have ourselves a look. We left our loves in Charleston, with tear drops in their eyes. 6th Fleet said We'll soon be back, if someone really tries. We sailed all day, we sailed all night, Within the battlegroup. We had to sail to Souda Bay, to have ourselves a look. The others' try at OPPE, was really quite a joke. Her plant unsound, it soon Went down, and made a lot of smoke. The CO has to find a way, to say that We've been took. We had to sail to Souda Bay, to have ourselves a look. When we finally got the word, the crew was really hot. If someones' crew was close enough they surely would be shot. We need a Way to lose the day, so pizza's we did cook. We finally sailed to Souda Bay, and had ourselves a look. Ships 'Mission and History USS SANTABARBARA is the third ship commissioned in the Kilauea class offast attack ammunition ships with the mission to transport and deliver ammunition, missiles and supplies to the various ships in the fleet while underway. Her keel was laid on 19Dec 1 966 at Sparrows Point, Maryland shipyard ofthe Bethlehem Steel Corp. She was commissioned andjoined the Atlantic Fleet on 1 1 Jul 1 970. Originally homeported in Davisville, Rhode Island, her homeport was changed to Charleston, South Carolina, one ofAmerica 's oldest and most historic cities. To this date, she remains homeported at Charleston 's Naval Weapons Station. I , Throughout the history of SAN TA BARBARA, the ship and her crew have gained an outstanding reputation as a professional and can do team. Her awards include Battle Efficiency E Awards won in 1 979, 1 980 and 1 989 for exceptional performance from all departments and superior overall ability. She was awarded the Meritorious Unit Commen- dation in 1 973 for numerous records set replenishing at sea during the Vietnam conflict, 1 988 for her performance during her 3-88 deployment and again in 1 993 for her short notice tasking forMed 1-93. In 1 989, she earned the Golden AnchorAward for the retention in her class and was parent command for the 1 989 Surface Forces Atlantic Sailor ofthe Year. In 1 991, she earned the Engineering Efficiency E and Damage Control Efiiciency E . Since commissioning, SANTA BARBARA has met her demanding job in nearly every corner of the world, deploying 14 times on major cruises to the Western Pacific, nNorth Atlantic, Mediterranean and Indian Ocean. On recent cruises she has visited such ports as Glen Douglas, Scotland, La M addalena, I talyg Rhodes, Greece, Palma deMallorca, Spain ' Lisbon, Portugal, Toulon, France and Souda Bay, Crete. Currently she is deployed in the Mediterranean with the John F. Kennedy battlegroup. g The name SANTA BARBARA carries special significance for an ammunition ship. It is the name ofthe city of Santa Barbara, California where a mission was raised for Saint Barbara, a third century martyr. 1 Saint Barbara, Virgin and Martyr is said to have lived at the close ofthe third and beginning ofthe fourth century. . Her rich father, Dioscorus, denounced his lovely and educated daughter for becoming a Christian and beheaded her himself after she had been condemned by the Governor. Diosorus was then struck by lightning and killed. SaintBarbara has from that time on been considered the protectress against lightning, thunder and flame. Of course, when gun powder was used by the Europeans, she became the Patron Saint of cannoneers and ordnancemen . . The ships 'insignia combines this ancient legend with contemporary America. The lightning on the protective banner is symbolic of the protection Saint Barbara gives against flame and lightning. The mountains and sun are borrowed from the official seal ofthe city of Santa Barbara, representing natural beauty ofthe southern California city after which the ship is named. Nos Numerous Unus which means We are Number One in Latin, is a very fitting description ofthe ship and her crew. Their intense pride in their ship is exemplified by the professionalism they display each and every day.
