Ship's istory The keel of SANTA BARBARA was laid on 49 December 4966 at Sparrow's Point, Maryland shipyard of the Bethlehem Steel Corporation. Mrs. Graene C. Bannerman sponsored SANTA BARBARA at her launching on 23 January 4968. SANTA BARBARA was commissioned and joined the Atlantic Fleet on 44 July 4970. The snip was initially homeported in Davisville, Rhode island. After intensive training at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, SANTA BARBARA completed preparations, post shake-do wn availability, and various other facets of training prior to her maiden journey to the Mediterranean Sea in September 497 4. Shortly after her arrival back in homeport on 47 March 4972, the ship was ordered to the Western Pacific in support of U. S. Seventh Fleet forces already deployed to that area as part of the United States armed forces in Vietnam. SANTA BARBARA sailed on 4 June 4972. Her subsequent nine-month deployment saw SANTA BARBARA set records for replenishing ships at sea, for which performance the ship was awarded the Meritorious Unit Commendation. The snip returned to homeport 49 February 4973. After conversion to Navy distillate fuel from standard fuel oil in the summer of 4973, SANTA BARBARA was ordered to change homeports to Charleston, South Carolina as part of the Navy's Base Consolidation Program. On 49 September 4973 SANTA BARBARA was underway for Charleston. From that base, the ship has trained in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba on five different occasions, and has deployed to the Mediterranean from April-September 4974, April-September 4975, April-October 4977, October 4978 to April 4979, and from March-August 4980. SANTA BARBARA has also made three Mediterraneanflndian Ocean deployments from November 4984 to May 4982, November 4982 to June 4983, and October 4984 to February 4985. The ship made a North Atlantic cruise from February-April 4 984. SANTA BARBARA won consecutive Battle Efhciency E Awards in 4979 and 4980 and throughout her history of deployments has earned and maintained a reputation as a highly proficient and can-do ship. 4
