The Freedom Monument as it wil In the spring of 1969, Mr. Ernie Crane, political science instructor at Santa Ana College, approached FATA with the idea of errecting a monument honoring the boys who came from Santa Ana College and lost their lives in wars. FATA immediately accepted the idea and began to work to raise the necessary 57550. to build the monument. So far they have raised 52000 by a car wash, sponsoring a swap-meet, holding a jazz rock festival, and also from contributions made from people both on and off campus. It has been decided that any excess money will go into scholarships, eight of which Mr. Crane has already appropriated himself. 28 'llllblg Wllmnngmu- I look when it is built. The Freedom Monument p ll ' O ll l To be situated in the center of the mall, the monument is to be 16 feet high and 25 feet at the base. A bronze plaque placed on it will have the names of Santa Ana College male students who have been killed in past wars, in order that Ameri- cans will remember their heritage and continue to support the boys who fight for them. Inside the monument will be placed a time capsule with the names and addresses of all the people who con- tributed a dollar or more to the freedom monu- ment. One hundred years from the date of com- pletion of the monument the capsule will be re- opened. Their appearance was sponsored by the Southern California Center for Education in Public Affairs, a non-profit organization. Speaking for one hour, Reagan supported the tution system, stating that colleges should have a plan by which students could go to school and pay their tuition on an installment plan. On the other hand, Alioto spoke out against tuition so that every person will have an equal opportunity for high- er education. 31 Students Meet Fellow Students AT Hello Dinner-Dance, Rec The Heollo festivals started over 20 years ago and have since that time have been continued as school officails found these activities play an im- portant part in the social life of the students, Stu- dents came to eat spagetti, dance, meet new friends, and just listen to the music. Playing at times with an all- freshmen defense, and with a freshmen-oriented offense as well lalthough the offensive line had a strong sophomore influencel, the Dons complete- ly reversed last year's 7-2 record--and then some. It is a little suprising and baffling how one team coud rage so many close battles and end up short every time. Games such as a 14-12 loss to Orange Coast, 7-3 to San Diego, 20-13 to Riverside, all are games where the winning break could have easily gone either way. The tough defense ranked second overall in the conference, but the lack of genuine offensive spark proved the downfall. There were no Eddie Stewards to make the big play this year. But with the valuable experience gained, next year's team --providing the freshmen have learned their les- sons well--should return Santa Ana College to the upper regions of the standing where it belongs. 9 Rick Deckert 10 Tim Young 11 Mike Erickson 12 Don Mott 15 Andy Solis lAceJ 20 Ron Gardea 21 Tom Schreiber 22 Frank Kelly 23 Steve Williams 24 Penesi Afaulo 25 Steve Hill 26 lack Sumitani 31 Frank Moraga 31 jerry Nickles 32 Rick Willis 33 Pete Rivera 34 jim Blen 40 Dave Tadman 41 Gary lensen 42 Rod Mumma Cap. 43 Craig Liticker 44 Tom lulian 45 Vance Mc lnnis 50 lim Pierson 50 Dunne Bernard MGR. Combining talent with stamina and sheer gut- determination, the Don harriers annihilated county rivals Orange Coast and Fullerton by respective scores of 17-49 and 21-40. Freshman Tom Lipski led the way, becoming only the second man in Don history to break the 19- minute barrier. SAC was rated as one of the top teams in the state. oling Led Dons in Conference Finals With Tom Lipski and jerry Poling leading the way, the Don harriers stormed to a third-place con- ference finish. SAC totaled 57 points, finishing just four points above champion San Diego Mesa and above Cerritos. Lipski finished second, Poling fourth, and Mor- ris Sammons ninth. All are freshmen. Finishing first was Rubin Chappins of Cerritos. Perhaps the highlight of the season was when the team journeyed to Northern California and captured the Sacramento lnvitational.,With such success from a freshmen team, it can clearly be said Coach Brubaker and his Dons are a team with their eyes on the future. 5 . i ' 1 3' - . ,., H L, en 54.-Q-L... ,.... The Santa Ana man is down and the crowd is scream- ing for an escape. The cheering takes hold. With a quick rolling motion. The SAC wrestler is now on top, looking for a pin. This means that the time for my Presidentialterm and another semester is coming to an end. It has been the great- est honor to serve as your president for the fall semester of 1969. Needless to say, the job of Presi- denthas been an invigorating experience and I've gained quite an insight into human nature and democracy. I like what I saw, and it is quieting to my mind. A moral awakening coupled with a penchant for action for change has changed the role of the students in both college and society. In a period of uncertainty, complexity, demonstrations, riots, and an undeclared war, students have broken out of their passive shells and demanded to be heard and understood, varied though their demands may be. But change isnot synonymous with progress and no one knows what the aftermath will be. What I'm glad to see though, is that students are no longer sitting back and waiting for society to change, but are trying to help reshape society into a meaningful role.,In a few years these same students will merge into society and become a part of it. Through involvement and interest, I hope these new members of society will continue working for betterness. - T ' The greatest blessing of democracy is thatlit can be changed. It does not stop people from voice- ing their opinions, ideas, and oppositions. But democracy does require much thought, deep reflect- ions, combined minds, determination, and the responsibility to discipline oneself with open- mindedness. If you accept these requirements I forsee a great America because society and indi- viduals will make it that way. In the final analysis, Americas success will be determined by you. I hope that you accept this challenge. I In closing I would like to say: A TO YOU CONTINUING STUDENTS---May you find intellectual awakening, personal strength and spiritual peace on your journey along the challenging road to self-realization and academic success. TO YOU WHO HAVE COMPLETED YOUR ACADEMIC CAREER---May you find life's enduring values, calmness amidst confusion, and success in your future goals. AND TO ALL---Best wishes for a meaningful and successful life. l Sincerely, Henry L. Men of the Year Banquet is AMS' annual activity its purpose being to honor those men who contri- i Wait buted to the progress and welfare of the Santa Ana College. The first semester Associated Men Stu- dents' President is Steve Rundquist and the advisor to the organization is William Corser, Dean of Men Students. This club is constituted of the president and one elected representative from each of the active clubs. The Inter-club Council is held responsible for the many dances, recreation nights, and the Gypsy Doodle. Usually the club is the sponsor of one of the various activities. The ICC has been in operation since 1953. The advisors are Isabelle Rellstab and William Corser who act as the intermediary body between the numerous campus organi- zations. ICC's job corresponds with that of the House of Representatives in the Feder- al Government, and as such, the Council carries the main body of work for our student government. President Robert Boyd presided over each meeting while the many issues were voted on and passed by the majority. The Home- coming committees were the most successful and well or- ganized activities. The opti- mism was expressed by their willingness to work together. +-,., Inter-Clu Council Legislation for Santa Ana College since 1966, has been invested in the form of a unicameral house called the Senate. The membership is composed of twenty-one popularlygelected Senators. Each Senator serves for one semester in length. The presiding officer, acting as chairman, is the vice- president of ASSAC Some of the duties and powers of the Senate are the approving of all presidential appointments such as the Supreme Court lud ges the considering of all new laws and passing the alloted budget and endorsing all pro grams for raising revenues The Senate meets once a week in the Student Government Chambers and handles the student social calendars Student Senate .Q l 'H Each Senator is responsible for carrying out the stu- dent representation on the S.A.C. campus and help handle most of the steadily growing curriculum, Thus, the specific objectives in student government may be accomplished through this wing of the tri- lpartite form of S.A.C. government. Supreme Court The Supreme Court is empowered to carry out judicial responsibilities of the Associated Students. The five judges who are appointed by the ASSAC President, are in the office up to a two-year term. The Chief justice presides over the cases brought to it involving student or club conduct and violation of the ASSAC by-laws which can result in a fine or revocation of his student body card. The ASSAC Supreme Court is aided by a Court Clerk and four associate justices. A Court Secretary is also appointed. The ASSAC Supreme Court is a neces- sary part of our tripartate system of Santa Ana College student government. 24 1 iffy-11: . v - 1 A -1: 11111 , 2 H 'gf ' JZ , ,wif ' 5:5923 ,QQZLQ if :av-. tum ,gsigsfk YT X- ,L ff X mv:-g A 2.1 fix W5 51155 Ws1'fw'z:4fQ?r. k 'J' ' f ' -- ,.m,,.X Y: F -xiwwmki ?QQfsgQ:f1' N ' M L W M V' fflfwb Q fy A , ,.LL - ,. wr in 463525, , -f ,,r.,4vl AWQM? .aka 55. Las Meninas, an active service club on campus, has worked since 1930 in aiding the school through many essential social activities and service functions, promo- ting social and leadership abilities in its members. It is the aim of every Las Men- inas member to become a well-rounded college student in scholastic ability, lead- ership, and extra service activities. Club Activities Vp' . .if-S Student signs petition, a pledge of support of the club he is planning to join. At the beginning of each fall and spring semesters Santa Ana College campus or- ganization set up headquarters in the circle around the library hoping to gain student participation in their clubs. Students were supplied with information about clubs as they visit the club's table. Active club members encouraged each student to join campus organization and become one of the many participating SACstudents. Students had a variety of clubs to join according to their preference 7 v - l l ..:.. 129 Newly organized during the spring semester was the club concerned with air pollution. sf iff 'Y by L ' POLITICALAND ECON DMI Wqxi R I G H 1'-'lifozmff :lf3ll1.llS 'q'f5 lvsunoun Dun Nh -mnbvihummm, . s . i 'win' 'mlauowmnu Oillwuocls. Extended day students normally are more mature, motivated and inclined to contribute more to class discussions than day students, mainly because of their ages. The ,campus is beautiful at night as lights high- light the various buildings as though the lights seem to reflect the extended day student's unceas- ing desire to learn after a hard day's work. The day students often forgets that there are also students attending college at night. But if one hap- pens to drive by at night they will see the parking lots jammed with cars to the fullest capacity. rw r www' rwrmg W r W , uw E',0,ru,, ,., , Wir -rrmwu ,., ii rl., 7- .'. rrl,.'uw yr 1.lE,.Mr.q ,ills .ri r ,,,,,,,, El . -g,,.- .rv ' PM it X X., . ,.'. -.QEQJ-Q The Secretaries ,gEQdffiwQi u, iq? , - R r-:w w , ' we an . Snack Bar The Snack Bar runs full steam ahead from morn- ing until late at night, where this haven for students, between classes, is the focal point of SAC. Rhoda Gilgore, Madeline Stephens, Gwen Korkola, Ruby Collier, Lucille Aulrich and Marge Mattson go above and beyond the call of duty serving delicious hamburgers, fries and refreshments efficiently and smoothly and still have time for a friendly hello. Six hundred students file through the Snack Bar daily to partake of a hamburger, munch on an apple or a candy bar. In addition to serving delicious foods, the staff is friendly and believes in service with a smile. The next time you are in the Snack Bar take time to say hello you might find a friend who is more than willing to bridge the generation gap. The Cafeteria A pause in the activities of the day that refreshes and renews energy of students, is a good discrip- tion ofthe cafeteria. Here is a place where one can obtain a good home cooked meal and exchange new ideas and concepts across the table. Roughly four hundred students pass through the cafeteria line daily. Breakfast, lunch or coffee and pie, are the pencil and paper of the cafeteria. In addition to this the staff of the cafeteria take care of refreshments for teas, faculty meetings, or social functions that are sponsored by various groups of the Student Body. Mrs. Della Venturia is in charge of the cafeteria along with her staff of: Louise Viscosi, Vi johnson, Helen Mathews, Carolyn Orapho, Dorris Wallace, Mary Teague, and Deloris Pisciotti. ld' Smiles are C l '-'f 1 -Q Lf -ew an! n't limited to the Snack Bar as Cafeteria staff proves. eeting Point of the Students me azjraf Coffee or Tea??
