Three more buildings have been approved, a new library, Fine Arts building and vocational shops building. Closing out 41 years of community service, the college is attaining perman- ent status on its third campus. The new facilities will enable students and staff to do even finer work. Both are retiring this year, with Mr. Bruff spanning the colIege's growth from 1919 and Mr. Scott since 1927. JI Russell Bruff is known to thousands of Dons for his exacting work in botany, zoology and the biological sciences. He has advised many Executive Boards and is a longtime Science chairman. His colleague in the geology depart- ment is an authority on Pacific Slope geology. Our only regret is that he will not occupy the new geology lab and museum in the Hammond Hall of Physi- cal Science. We gratefully dedicate the i956 Del Ano to the teaching careers and student inspiration contributed by these dedi- cated scientist-educators. mvu v' . IFQQT XLXLL . , , , - Q A - .1 . x .., A ,,., 5, Although outpointed several times during the season, Santa Ana's '55 football squad was never outdone in the departments of desire, determination and spirit. This was quite a task at times, as the Don gridders faced some of the toughest junior colleges in the nation during the season with a small, thinly-manned squad short on returning lettermen. The fine temperament of the team throughout the season is a fitting tribute to the job done by Head Coach Don Davis in his first season, and John Ward, his assistant. Opening the season against Citrus away from home, the Dons were edged out 12-7. San Francisco City College was the next opponent for Santa Ana, and-the rampaging Rams defeated SAC, 55-7. In the last practice game, Long Beach CC nosed out the Dons, 18-O. The Dons played fine football in their opening league game and upset a powerful San Bernardino crew 19-6. Orange Coast's Pirates won a thrilling game the next week, 21-13. Bouncing back against Riverside College, the Dons overcame six point deficit at half time to take their second Eastern Conference victory, 13-6. Traveling to Phoenix for a non-conference tilt, Santa Ana lost a 41-15 game to the strong Bears. Next the Dons took on the burly Mt. San Antonio Mounties, then ranked second nationally. Despite the Dons' efforts to stem the tide, the Mounties thundered over the Santa Ana squad 40-O. On Thanksgiving day, Santa Ana played its 1955 grid finale against Fullerton, which had just unseated Mt. SAC from its Eastern Conference throne. The Hornets crushed the outmanned Dons 55-7. Despite a serious height shortage and an even more serious manpower shortage near the seasonfs end, the Dons came through to beat several squads that were rated far above them. Two of the Dons most impressive victories were non-conference games over Harbor and Santa Monica, who respectively and placed second in their league. Chaffey started SAC on winning ways in the Dons first league game. Riverside upset the winning streak at the outset however, squeezing by the SAC squad 73-72- A successful practice tilt punctuated this defeat and SAC's encounter with the powerhouse of the Eastern Conference. The Dons dropped consecutive games to Fullerton, Mt. San Antonio, Orange Coast, and San Bernardino to end the first round of league play. Resurging for two more victories, the Dons overran Chaffey for the second time and succeeded in dropping favorite Riverside, The last six galmes on schedule all ended in defeat for the Don quintet. The Santa Ano team fielded only seven men in their last game. Phoenix, Loyola Frosh, Fullerton, Mt. All three of SAC's triple threat Hunden brothers, Gene, Bob, and Bill were forced to drop out mid-way in the season. Powerful Orange Coast was the league victor and most prominent team to step heavily on the Dons' scorebook. The Coast team beat SAC 17-3 and 10-3. in league play. Successful hitting by the Dons at the plate was not accompanied by equal success in the runs-scored department, as they never quite got the right combina- tion in the lineup to push across scores when the need was greatest. Frank Grizzelle carried the biggest stick for the Dons this year, consistently batting well over the .300 mark. Another top hitter for SAC was Dave Ellis, who also did better than average at the plate. Outstanding fielders who turned in many run saving plays for the Dons were Dave Ellis and Frank Grizzelle. San Antonio's cindermen in Eastern Conference competition. SAC went on to place third in the Southern California Championship Meet, and succeeded in sending five men, Dave Krowel, Jim Giyer, Lee Mathews, John Kershaw, and Jon Winter, to the California State Meet in defense of their state championship. Fielding only twenty-two men during the season, Coach John Ward brought the team along well, but powerful Mt. SAC College proved too great a hurdle for the Don Cindermen in the league finals. The Donslsuccessfully made shambles of the rest of their EC opponents, both in the conference finals and in meets before the conference windup. Track fans will recall the excellent efforts of two miler Jack Currier, quarter miler Kent Scholten, shot putter Dave Whalen, pole vaulter Bell Hammond, sprinter Ron Contreras, broad iumpers Rod Jones, Joel Habener and Jerry Kocurek, hurdler John Schick, high jumper David Haven, and many others.
