'I02-110 ALMANAC 1952 53 AMPUS The first Santa Ana College Campus was established at the old Polytechnic High School on Walnut Street. In those days, there were twenty-tive students enrolled and they were considered an advanced department of the high school. ln l934, after having been declared in a iunior college district, the campus was moved into the old college hall group of buildings on North Main Street. This remained the site tured here is one of the buildings from that old college site. '13, 1 - Q 'i li 'ie li., .e Y .0 - '-'. Pic- wigrx- .al Fig, ,ZW '1 ' 'r an-1' .4 i :l il t l il '-i Pictured above is the architect's three dimension layout of our proposed complete campus. Up to date we have the maiority of the buildings completed and they are now in use. The new buildings yet to be built include the large auditorium, new gymnasium, engineering, libraryand fine arts buildings, and a drama section with a small auditorium. The fate of these buildings lies largely in the hands of the individual taxpayer and voter. A bond issue which will decide whether or not our campus will be completed is due for presentation in June of '53. When and if we get our college campus completed, we will offer a greater field of subiects and opportunities for high school graduates in the county. With these changes Santa Ana College will continue to grow and serve efficiently and well the needslof her community. fr-1 3 W it - H U in . X u -' 55 . STUDENT GOVERNMENT Taking over the student body affairs of the year '52-'53 was no easy iob, nevertheless Bob Elsner and his executive board lost no time in initiating their executive powers. They organized committees for the drawing up of the student budget, L A A which took a considerable amount of consideration and planning. Even ' before the start of school they were busy preparing for the big Asso- ciated Student ticket sale. As the semester progressed, other problems and affairs presented themselves, such as the Homecoming Dance and football game, the Get Acquainted Dance, the penalty law for outstand- ' ing Student Tickets, many Eastern Conference conventions, the State Con- ference at Hollywood, and at the end of the year the approval of the yearbook bid. Elsner can be proud indeed to have headed and organized such an active board as this one. l t COMMISSIONERS 1 .4 A 4 l l Bob Elsner President, Associated Students Fall Term - 1952-1953 EXECUTIVE BOARD -fAL - a E George Bartell Commissioner of Publicity L A A l l l Ray Quigley Commissioner of Assemblies. l vii' ' ' ll Bob Merkert ECUTIVE BOARD-M b of the first semester Board are, left to right, VGEOYQG Bane I . ORCH EST R A Ctsrii 1193 Ili' 0 -fan- 4-I 4317 As is common, every school's music department is depended upon to furnish any musical entertainment through- out the year. The department this year found this to be very true. The orchestra, assisted the choral group in con- cert as well as performing other times at music concerts. Although there are other students from the High School composing the orchestra, the College is still well represented. Mr. Lamont was this year's director. The Band, of course, was present at all football games throughout the year, and at all pep rallies, to help give that extra punch and pep to the school spirit. The Choir performed in this year's Christmas program as well as handling the musical portions of Rio Rita. They were also represented at the Southern California Junior Choir Festival. Gordon Wheatley, head of the music department, deserves a considerable amount of credit as it was through him most of the musical activities were inspired and organized. S.A.C. A,--iii ' E1 l953's Del Ano can be thankful for two things: namely George Bartell and Bob Haddock. Bartell, serving as art and makeup editor, was re- sponsible for the art work and layout in the book. Haddock was the sole full-time photographer and spent many hours, days, and weeks on the publication. For the second year in a row, the Del Ano was lithographed, and the results have been readily accepted and approved by students and faculty. This year the book contains more pictures than ever before. Eleanor Pettis headed the literary staff, which was responsible for the picture identification and all copy in the volume. The 1952-'53 El Don, as usual, was tops, both iournalistic- ally and from the reader's standpoint. First semester it won All-American honors, and from the looks of things, it is well on its way to winning another this last semester. Along with lots of good, interesting stories, the El Don was full of photos of campus activities and shots of interest. An addition to the makeup was the group of hilarious cartoons drawn by Dick Bibler called The Little Man On Campus. They provided humor for both faculty and student. Both Bill Shands and Bob Elsner can be proud of the type of reading enioyment they have directed to us this year. Looking good in practice competition the team went into a slight slump in league play. The lack of good hitting in the clutches lost for them several close games. A contender to the very end, it ended the season with a 8-4 won and lost record. Yes, iust where would we go to cram for tests, grumble about the teachers, play pinochle, or get a few vitamins ga, before going to class? One good guess is that wherever we would go, we wouldn't be able to find a better buddy than Dorothy Conforth. lt's really amazing how she keeps from getting bitter at everyone, with all the people that go in there. One can always expect a friendly smile when he goes in for a cup of coffee and a doughnut, or if they have more time, a game of cards. Dorothy has been here now for a year and a half, and we all hope that she stays many more. Among the ern- ployees of outstanding service Dorothy has had, there are these: iarring .lack Moynihan, Hoibie Schoenowitz, jungle Jim Prather, Jack Wilcox. THIS IS DOROTHY, the failing student's best friend. Pictured here is Dorothy and her crew. Being served is Augie the Wader Huesca. CAFETERIA l l THE FOOD POlSONERSl Better known as the cafeteria staff. Left to right is Joe Duke Voso, Doris Yergler, Minnie Spangler, Mary Hawkins. All kidding aside, the Cafeteria staff has done a wonderful iob of preparing a good looking, delicious meal, con- sistently, every clay of school. Few people realize the trouble they go through to plan a well balanced variety of foods from the standpoint of cost and also taste. They take a lot of guff from all of us about the food, but really you won't find any higher quality or better tasting food at any other school cafeteria in the country. Just consider that they must please the tastes of 300 or more people each day, and you'll all agree that they do a pretty good iob. By the way, the girl at the right in the picture didn't lose her finger. llO 1 MCNAUGI-ITON E TA ANA JUNIOR COLLEGE DISTRICT DANIEL C.
