She has shown, through personal charm and keenness of mind, that she was a fine choice to be an A.F.S. good will ambassador. Nicoletta's visit was made possible by the American Field Service and through the kindness of the Lynn H. Lende family, who shared their home. Nicoletto has learned to enjoy many American foods and activities and will, undoubtedly, share them with her family and friends at home. In completing the exchange idea, she has taught her American friends Italian customs. Nicoletto hos proven once more what a wonderful program the American Field Service has created. FOREIGN EXCHANGE STUDENTS Kaiundborg, Denmark, is the home town of exchange student, Erik Svaneborg. Erik, under the sponsorship of the Americon Field Service and sharing the home of the Robert E. Bowyer family, has found many differences between Santa Ana and Kalundborg. Freeways, millions of people, orange groves and our warm climate were all new to him. It is in these differences and in making comparisons with Denmark, however, that the value of Erik's experience is made apparent. The whole A.F.S. idea is a program of learning. Hoping to make a career in the Danish diplomatic corps, Erik is well on his woy to fulfilling his wish. As an exchange student, he has demonstrated friendliness, an ability to learn and a willingness to tell about his native Denmark. All these qualities are necessary elements for a future in diplomacy. Erik's trip and study will not soon be forgotten by either him or his American friends. Erik Svoneborg 120 Lafti Allemon AMERICANS ABROAD Trondheim, Norway, was the home town of Lani Alleman, an A.F.S. American Abroad, for the first semester of her senior year. After completing many applications and waiting through many anxious months in her junior year, Lani was notified thot she was to spend seven months with the Hoyem family in wonderful Trondheim. In June, 1962, Lani left on an adventure that exceeded even her most thrilling dreams. She sailed across the Atlantic, traveled by train across northern Europe, studied Norwegian in Oslo, and went to school in Trondheim. Becoming fluent in the language of her new friends enabled Lani to get acquainted with many Norwegian customs. She learned to know and understand Norway and her people. Now that she is home again, she can help more Americans understand the Scandinavians. In doing this, Lani is fulfilling the purpose of her sponsor, the American Field Service. Senior Susan Salquist spent six months in Kulmbach, Germany, this year. As a part of the American Field Service program, Susan lived with a German family, that of Heinz Andrae, and saw and took part in many traditions of romantic Germany. Standing out in Susan's life in her foreign home are the boat trips on the fabulous Rhein and a visit to divided Berlin. In these two memories Susan holds a picture of both beautiful and tragic Germany. Learning the language and going to school were of major importance to our Saint abroad. Susan is now better able to understand the situations and viewpoints of a people whose country is of world-wide importance. Sujon Solquht Dovid Kinwald Jo« Kowojo, Potli Elliott Curti Pope NO MOTHER TO GUIDE HER OR MORE TO BE PITIED THAN CENSORED Already famous for such past hits as A Working Girl's Secret, Oklahoma!, The Man Who Came to Dinner, The Boyfriend, and You Can't Take It with You, a talented group of actors in Santa Ana High School presented No Mother to Guide Her as its Winter Play. Under the enthusiastic guidance of Joyce Heidecke as student director and the thoroughness of Jeff Evans as stage manager, the 1962 Winter Play was expertly presented. The cost was headed by Sandy Anderson seen os Spring Overton; Curtis Pope as Caspar Van-denburgh; and Dave Kinwald os Talbot Twillingham. During the entire week before the play, the true sp:rit of the old melodramas was felt, as posters went up, handbills were passed out, and skits were given concerning the play. To add to the ofmosphere at the theatre, the P.T.A. sold popcorn and root beer with the waiters and waitresses dressed in appropriate costumes. Santa Ana High School is fortunate to have the enthusiastic and versatile leadership of Walden Leec-ing, head of the Drama Department. His influence as Drama Coach has reached nearly all of the students of Santa Ana High School for the post four years. Sandy Andcrton Pool Strybing Georgio Allemann I You've got to hand if to Little Mary Sunshine. These lyrics rang through the halls and still resound in proud memory of this year's musical. More than eighty hours rehearsal time contributed to the overwhelming success of Little Mary Sun-shine. Both stunning performances were adequate tribute to the dedication of an outstanding cost headed by Shirley Schrader as Little Mary and Ken James as Captain Jim with Diane Hall, Richard Lewis, Susan Hollowoy, Frank Sellers, Leonard Riley, and Roy Irwin. Numerous others including the Forest Rangers and Young Ladies from East Chester Finishing School added greotly to the success. The Production Staff by no means took a position of subordinate importance. Under the inspiring guidance of Mr. Walden Leecing; student directors, Georgia Alleman and Sandy Anderson; and the many eager chairmen and members of various committees so necessary for coordination in production, the play was hailed os a success. Espris de corps ran high, smoothly blending cast, staff, and orchestra info one precise unit. Several experiments proved successful this year: o special sound system improved the acoustics, reserved seating guaranteed a fine view; and a whispering compaign awarded valuable prizes. As an extra-added attraction our uniformed Forest Rangers could be seen parading down Fourth Street announcing the ploy. The musical truly proved that excellence is a tradition of S.A.H.S. 124 125 A T H L Don Guest SAINTS OF THE WEEK Ken Lloyd Ted Porks Gotio Seonoa Steve Tompkins - ■ ■, Richard Goode Chuck Briggs Rudy Andrade Terry Schnable Mike Meier Feiui Gafoo Corl Kuchera Dick Swenson Ken James Tim Wilson Chuck Ferris Monucl Guzman FIRST STRING Dole Hennemuth Ted Reed Dove Hartman Mike Bo-otman Ron Jackson Danny Perez Jim Beal John Warner Ted Stroschein Gerald Smith Bill Thompson r —T W h.. . It wos founded as a necessary part of school life to provide interested girls with an opportunity not only to exercise athletic enthusiasm in the social and recreational areas of volleyball, hockey, basketball, softball, tennis, and swimming, but also to develop sportsmanship and co-operation with fellow students. The club is well-known for its promotion of school spirit, its constant service, and the added recognition it has claimed for Sonta Ana High. This year the organization has been led by Harriet Kobayashi, Fall Semester President, and Jacquie Ransom, Spring Semester President. These two girls and their respective boards were under the direction of their teacher-advisors headed by Mrs. Beverly Romero and including Miss Bertie Ann Stevens, Mrs. Jennie Hayes, and Mrs. Barbara Cox with the faithful and invaluable aid of Mrs. Nora Clark. As one of its functions G.A.A. worked with the Girls' League to plan the Big-and-Little Sister Day. The members also participated in the Girls' Athletic Association Convention, created the third annual water show, attended their Fall and Spring Parties, held the annual Awards Banquet to honor the outstanding girls and advisors, and traveled throughout the year to various schools in the community for competition in every area of girls' athletics.
