FARRAR Demonstrating an enthusiastic, sincere interest in all phases of school life; bestowing inspiration and confidence; generously offering his time and talents to those who seek assistance and counsel; being a friend to all students, most of whom he knows personally; and manifesting outstanding executive ability. Mr. Robert S. Farrar, Principal of Santa Ana Senior High School since 1946, has given our school devoted leadership. To him, in appreciation of his years of faithfi'1 service, we dedicate this yearbook. Tabor, our superintendent of schools, and Mr. Robert Farrar, our principal, to oversee school policy, things ran smoothly throughout the year. Our vice-principals, Mr. Rollo Beck and Mrs. Mary Reed, did a fine job, as did our counselors, under Mr. Ralph Jack, guidance co-ordinator. The faculty taught us many valuable lessons, and the office and cafeteria personnel performed innumerable services for us. Finally, our student body officers, both elected and appointed, worked long and hard to make Saintland great. Superintendent of Schools Serving as Superintendent of Schools for his first year, Mr. Glenn D. Tabor has done an excellent job directing the affairs of our school system. His work and the work of the Board of Education have contributed greatly to the academic success of our school. They are to be commended for their labors in the field of education. Principal Working as principal is a job few are willing or capable to undertake. We at Santa Ana Senior High are fortunate to have Mr. Robert Farrar to head our administration. We should never forget the effort and time put into a job such as his and again we are very appreciative for the years of service he has given to our high school. 8 MR. ROLLO BECK MRS. These are the people who are most qualified in their fields, who are able to help us learn, and who can best prepare us for a world to conquer. Our teachers deserve the honor and glory for a job well done, for they as a single group hold the power to shape the world of tomorrow. Under the able supervision of Mr. Ralph Jack, guidance co ordinator, the counselors were able to devote more time to each student this year. Mrs. Asenath Bennett counseled senior and junior girls; Mrs. Nora White counseled senior and junior boys. Counselor for junior and sophomore girls was Mrs. Eleanor Peterson; for junior and sophomore boys was Mr. Edward Dodge. WINTER BOARD OF CONTROL This year’s winter Board of Control leaders, Doug Andrews, president; Gary Anderson, vice president; and Sue Milligan, secretary, showed excellent leadership ability. The Board began the year by attending the leadership conference at Camp Osceola, where they gained valuable knowledge about their own offices and activities. The sale of student body cards, which was an outstanding success this year, was the Board’s first major project. Because of their cooperation and enthusiasm, Color Day will always be remembered. The activities of the day included the morning assembly with the kangaroo court, the football game, and the annual Color Day Dance. Other noted achievements sponsored by the Board were the pep assemblies, where they enacted several amusing skits. ROW 1: N. Hunter, W. Filson, C. La Bonte, J. Price, F. Porter. ROW 2: B. Glasser, M. SPRING BOARD OF CONTROL Last semester found the Spring Board of Control busily occupied, discovering new activities to interest the students, which would be held here at school, and starting new traditions. Student Day, arranged by the board, certainly fulfilled these goals. In addition to Student Day, these ambitious leaders also worked diligently on the Talent Assembly and Senior Assembly. Working with their capable advisor, Mr. Black, three students are to be especially commended: Bob Glasser, President: Dick Allen, Vice President; and Willa Filson, Secretary. Also deserving acknowledgment are the members of the board who worked with these people: Judy Price, Commissioner of Publicity; Frankie Porter, Commissioner of Finance; Nancy Hunter, Commissioner of Girl’s Athletics; Russ Baggerly, Commissioner of Boy’s Athletics; Mickey Goldstein, Chairman of the Self-Government Committee; and Cindy La Bonte, Chairman of Student Relations. Our Ariel Literary Staff does all the writing, proofreading, and organizing of our yearbook. Nancy Denton, Mary Vander Meulen, and Marcia Huebner have spent many extra hours so that the 1962 Ariel can bring to the students many happy memories of Saintland. The staff also owes its accomplishments to the work and guidance of the adviser, Mr. Hagen. His personality has made enjoyable the sometimes tedious work required of the staff. Besides handling the Ariel sale, the Business Staff conducts all monetary matters, obtains sponsorships, and takes care of the distribution of the yearbooks. With the fine work of its outstanding members, the Business Staff has made the Arie. a great success this year. 23 Susan Milligan. Editor ROW 1: R. Mullins. D. Turpin. ROW 2: R. Parkins. R. Jones, P. LEAVES IN THE WIND Our senior ASP English class accepted the task of publishing Leaves in the Wind, Saintland’s literary book, this year due to the fact that there was no creative writing class. All students were invited to submit poetry and prose. Advised by Mr. Robert Anderson, the senior English class not only prepared the material for printing, but also chose the best works in each category. The winners received special recognition. Congratulations to the senior ASP English class; Judy Price, Editor-in Chief; Tom Webber. Managing Editor; and Jacquie Thomas, Business Manager; and all who contributed to this year’s Leaves in the Wind. Judy Price Editor 27 Wi 28 promote school spirit in inter-class activities, especially the competition yells in pep assemblies. From the “mighty seniors down to the “lowly sophomores,” their enthusiasm made our dances, games, assemblies, and plays worthwhile. Thanks to the entire student body, our traditional Saintland spirit was upheld throughout the year. John Leonard, President Karen Bate, Vice President Mary Vander Meulen, Secretary Each member of the graduating class of 1962 will take with him memories of his exciting three years at Saintland. Color Day Dances, Spring and Winter plays, and football games have all been exceptional. During the first semester the seniors were under the successful leadership of John Leonard, their senior class president. Karen Bate, vice-president, and Mary Vander Meulen, secretary, must also be acknowledged for their part in leading the senior class. The members of the senior class will soon have a chance to test their education, and to become good citizens. SENIOR COUNSELORS 30 Mrs. Asenath Bennett Mrs. Nora White John Reiter Senior Class President Sue Milligan Vice President Karen Bate Secretary The second semester will be one long remembered by this year’s senior class. Under the able leadership of the spring semester officers; Jon Reiter, president; Sue Milligan, vice president; and Karen Bate, secretary; the seniors enthusiastically participated in the various activities. Among these events were The Boy Friend, Senior Assembly, Senior Play, and Junior-Senior Prom; other activities included the Senior Breakfast, Baccalaureate, and Commencement. Many seniors were also participants in speech, art and other types of contests and tournaments. Mr. McCord, senior class advisor, should also be commended for all that he has contributed to the Class of 1962. Congratulations to all seniors, who well deserve their diplomas, for they have been leaders both academically and socially and are ready to face the world. These seniors will never forget their high school days, and they will long be remembered for the traditions they established. L 73 John Wilson Advisor Mrs. Elenor Peterson Counselor Ed Dodge Counselor John Knox, Vice President Sandy Middlebrook, Secretary The year 1961-62 has been a very successful one for the sophomore class. It has been a success in both academic and extra-curricular activities. The sophomore class officers have done a commendable job. They were John Buckles, president; John Knox, vice president; and Sandy Middlebrook, secretary. Mr. John Wilson is to be complimented on his job as sophomore class advisor. The counselors, Mrs. Eleanor Peterson and Mr. Ed Dodge, have also done a wonderful job. The class has showed its school spirit by its loyal support of all athletic events, dramatic productions, and dances, as well as the many other Saintland activities. The class has certainly helped make this year at Saintland a more pleasant one. Saintland is proud of its sophomores and hopes that they will keep up their good work in their returning years. 74 OW 1: Joanne Aasen, larilyn Acklin, Duease dams, Chris Adler, falter Agotsch, Abe guilar, Charles Aguilar, hris Akers, Gloria Al-arado. In two memorable performance, The Boy Friend scored a solid hit. Rehearsing afternoons, evenings, and holidays for five weeks, the cast, production staff, orchestra, and especially Coach Walden Leecing outdid themselves to surpass all previous theatrical efforts at Santa Ana Senior High School. The Boy Friend truly upheld our tradition of superiority in dramatics. 110 This year Saintland is very fortunate in having two foreign exchange students with us. Here from her home in Tehran. Iran, is Shushu Othmishi. Making her home with Mr. and Mrs. Dwight Duncan and their daughter. Virginia. Shushu has found many differences between Tehran and Santa Ana. School in Iran is not like school here, according to Shushu. No school uniforms. American football, and service clubs were all new to her. She enjoys these things very much, though, and is a member of Girls’ League Cabinet. Coterien Club. Spinsters, and American Field Service Committee. She also enjoys music and American movies. Shushu says that in Iran there is a great need for secretaries and she would like to help her country by being one. Everyone has enjoyed the warm friendliness of this charming girl. When it comes time for Shushu to return to Iran, we all will be very sorry to see such a fine ambassador of goodwill leave. FOREIGN EXCHANGE STUDENTS Also attending Santa Ana High School this year is Mike Buchen from West Berlin. Germany. Mike is making his home with Dr. and Mrs. Richard Preston. His foster brother is senior Rick Preston. Mike is very interested in the similarities in American and German schools. If he were in Germany Mike would attend thirty-three classes during a six-day week. Here he attends thirty classes in a five-day week. Mike's German high school has dances similar to ours. too. Mike is a member of French Club and German Club. After he returns to Germany. Mike plans to continue his schooling. He hopes to become a doctor. It is truly inspiring to talk with Mike and once more be reminded of the close relationships between two free countries—the United States and West Germany. 112 AMERICAN FIELD SERVICE COMMITTEE 1: C. The Girls’ Athletic Association offers a similar program, consisting of basketball, hockey, volleyball, softball, tennis, and competitive and synchronized swimming. MEET THE COACHES Santa Ana has always been renowned for its outstanding athletic teams. This year has been no exception. The teams have provided excitement, entertainment, and an outlet for school spirit. We, as a student body, are indebted to our coaches who through their unselfish service and devotion have provided us with many thrilling afternoons and nights of athletic events. Many students do not realize the time involved in presenting a team for competition at least once a week. One does not see the long hours coaches spend watching films or planning strategy. Many hours are spent in preparation to win, but coaches also strive to improve the character and mind of each athlete — a most important factor in athletics. It has been said that athletics is one of the greatest activities in which young men can participate. The coaches at Santa Ana High School make this statement a fact. We acknowledge the coach's many responsibilities and duties and confess our fortune in having such outstanding coaches at Santa Ana High School. Recovering again the charging Saints defeated La Habra and then fell to defeat before Huntington Beach. On Color Day the mighty Saints defeated Western. On the following week-end the Big Red lost to league champion Anaheim by one point in a game considered by the coaches as the team’s outstanding effort. Coach McKnight's charges finished the season with three wins and four losses by losing to Fullerton. The squad’s record was good enough for a third place tie in the Sunset League. Special awards were given to Don Davis, Saint of the Year and Most Inspirational, with Ted Reed as Most Improved, and Joe Reeves as the team's Most Valuable Player. All County and All League honors were won by seniors Joe Reeves and Don Davis was named for the second year. Reeves and Davis along with Ted Reed also won Times Football awards. Compared to the unfortunate season suffered last year, '61 was tremendous for the B team with an 8 win one loss record. Heading this years spectacle were Coach Roussos and Coach Hasley who worked in constant effort to perfect their team in as much as possible. Working against a minimum time limit, both coaches and team practised feveriously in what latter turned out to be a successful battle won. Losing their only game to Anahiem in an unexpected 20 to 0 score. Santa Ana’s B’s managed to take a second place under Anageims no loss record. Two players who worked side by side with Coach Roussos in equal out put were co-captains Don Guest and Manual Guzman. Orange, and Mater Dei for the championship. In the San Bernardino Tournament the Saints played a rough battle but lost to Ramona High, the school that later won the complete Tourney. The League games began with a bang when we defeated both Newport Harbor and Garden Grove. In their second La Habra game, the Saints won 48-47, sinking unbelievable shots and intercepting passes, to turn in their best game of the season. As the League games continued, the Saints were soundly trounced by Anaheim; however, they went on a scoring spree with Fullerton and turned in their best offensive game of the season. The overall score of the League games was eight wins and six losses, which put Santa Ana in third place. Three Saints were put on all-tournament teams for their outstanding performances. The returning Varsity lettermen were Gary Green, Tom Lutz, Bill Scherrer, Bob Welty, and Joe Wharton. However, many fine sophomore swimmers helped the Bee and Cee teams. The Saint Bee teams did very well this season, led by Roy Irwin, Tim Hendricks, John Me Gee, John Porter and Jim Styring. The team improved as the season progressed. Coach Caldwell was proud of his young team and felt that in the next two years, if the team continued to improve, the Saint swimmers could possibly take the championship. Another contributing factor to this year's fine swim team is the fact that the Varsity divers headed by Bill Scherrer, Tom Lutz and John Barber placed very high on the victory list. Coached by Mike Black these divers are a fine example of this years outstanding athletic teams. ROW 1: J. Styring, T. Gleason, R. Irwin, J. McGee. ROW 2: T. Lutz, J. Barber. J. Porter, B. The success of the season cannot be found in the win and lost column; for with only two returning lettermen Old Man Experience was too great a handicap to overcome, particularly in the powerful Sunset League. The teams were excellently guided by the fine, exemplary leadership of their co-captains. Bob Welty and Roy Irwin. Gary Green, the leading scorer and one of the two returning senior lettermen. soon proved to be the most valuable player of the year for the Saint Water Poloists. The teams are already eagerly looking ahead to bigger, better, and more victorious days that next year promises to bring them for their outstanding efforts and gains made during this season. The junior varsity also showed signs of putting up a strong struggle for the league title. In 1961 the varsity team finished in a tie for third and the junior varsity ended the season in fourth place. This year’s additional strength has been shown by a team win of the Redlands Scholastic Tournament, in which Richard White and Bill Kimball defeated teammates Tom Carr and Chuck Rapp in the doubles finals. White, a finalist in last year’s Sunset League Championships, ranked number four in the 1961 all-Sunset League teams and also won Division 1 of the Orange County scholastic over teammate Jim Vogt. The team more than doubled the score of the second place school in this tournament. The one dual match played this year at press-time, Santa Monica, 1961 CIF runners-up, decisively defeated the Saint squad, but hopes are high for revenge at a later date. 136 ROW 1: B. Morales, C. A participant of G.A.A. represents the girl who is vitally interested in school spirit as well as in team spirit, both of which are necessary for the makings and progress of a great school. Under the able guidance of Miss Bertie Ann Stevens. Miss Verna Hitchner, Mrs. Beverly Romero, and Mrs. Jennie Hayes, the different teams have competed successfully with other schools and among themselves. Each team has its own commissioner who directs a competitive sport and interprets the game rules. In the past the G.A.A. has always obtained a great deal of recognition for Saintland. and this year is no exception. Mrs. Jennie Hayes. Miss Verna Hitchner, Mrs. Beverly Romero.
