or :y Sy . H- ARIEL 1960 SANTA ANA SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL $ M.E FOREWORD The Ariel of 1960 is dedicated to every person of every race, nationality, and religion attending Santa Ana Senior High School. Here, we are of many types. We are descendants of pilgrims who immigrated to our shores years ago. We are white, Negro, Mexican, Indian, Chinese and Japanese. We are Catholic, Jew, and Protestant. We are good students active in school functions as well as careless students without a goal. But most of all, we are young, and we hope that by educating people of all kinds together when they are young that our nation shall continue to be united; and when the time comes and we have to take the positions and places of our fathers and forefathers, we will have less cases of intolerance and prejudice in our country and more world understanding. ADMINISTRATION SUPERINTENDENT This is the second yeor fhof Dr. Oliver C. Lawson has served as Superintendent of Schools. We ore all thankful for the splendid way he, along with the Board of Education, has managed the affairs of our school system. The continued smooth operation of our own high school, and the successful first year of operation for Valley High School are well-deserved tributes to his efforts. PRINCIPAL There is no tangible means of measuring the impact that Santo Ana High School has had on its nearly two thousand students during these post nine months. The influence that 83 teachers have on us students during a year is amazing, and it places on their shoulders an awesome responsibility. It is comforting to know that guiding the fine body of instructors at Santo Ana High School is a man with the exceptional qualities of our principal, Mr. Robert S. Farrar. He not only has the much needed formal and practical training needed to execute his job, but he also has the type of character requisite for encouraging the teachers and students under him on to better things We thank you. Mr. Farrar, for your personal interest in the welfare of each person at Santa Ana High School. R JlKSiii'Ui MR. Vice President. The winter semester was superbly headed by President Steve Perryman, Vice President Terry Carlyle, and Secretary Lynn Walker, and the efficient Board of Control. It wos because of these people fhot a most memorable Color Day was enjoyed by oil of the students. The day s festivities from the assembly in the morning to the game and dance at night were all carefully planned by the Board of Control. Other events throughout the first semester included the noon time pep assemblies, which spirited our Saints into a Sunset League champ-ionship the Fathers' Night, which honored the fathers of our mighty Saint football team; and the Football Banquet, which was planned and decorated by the Board. Above is just a sample of the enthusiasm and time put in by the fen Board members to start off the 59- 60 school year with a bang! Prc4id ?nf STEVE PERRYMAN Row I Mr Collier. C Hyle. I Wolker. SPRING BOARD OF CONTROL Preside ’ -STAN FARRAR SPRING BOARD OF CONTROL When the spring Board of Control were elected in January they had a lot of planning and hard work ahead of them. They organized the assemblies and noon dances in addition to handling all the student activities. This active board was under the leadership of their officers: Stan Farrar, President; Joel Ohlgrep, Vice President; and Bonnie Walker, Secretary. All posters or bulletins in the halls are set up by these board members. They can always be seen doing some worthwhile project. This year they were supporting the American Field Service campaign to raise money for foreign exchange students. No, the work of this board is never finished until the last day of school. They are continually building the quality of student government activities. May the students on this spring board be congratulated for their industrious work! The first semester's cabinet was headed by Caroline Ault, President; Carlyn Peelle, Vice President; Angie Tafoya, Secretary; and Nancy White, Treasurer. This cabinet sponsored such activities as the New Students' Dinner, the Girls' Assembly, and the decorating of the Christmas tree in the foyer. They were also in charge of the Sophomore Tea, which included a fashion show presented by Buffums', and the Color Day Dance, which centered around a delightful circus theme. For the spring semester the girls of Santa Ana High School elected Susan Weaver, President; Lee Fernandez, Vice President; Penny Peelle, Secretary; and Penny Utley, Treasurer. This cabinet also presented a Girls Assembly,- but their most important duty was that of sponsoring one of the biggest events of the year, the Co-ed. This dance was one of the biggest and most successful dances of the year. To all girls on the Cabinet we extend our congratulations for another year of wonderful activities. Row I- Caroline Ault. F Force ARIEL ART STAFF This year the Ariel Art Staff has worked harder than ever to make this year's Ariel the best one yet. With the help of their adviser, Miss Linda Griffiths, and their editor, Cathy Hyle, they planned the entire layout of the Ariel. Cartoons, artistic pictures, and other samples of art are also the work of this staff. This year's cover serves as a good example of their excellent work. The staff certainly deserves our thanks for o beautiful Ariel that we con be proud of. CATHY HYIE, Editor Row 1 Mils Griffiths. J. Wulfkuhlo, M. Marcus, C Hyle, J. Wall. Row 2 N Femmcr C lan pnt, M. Under the competent leadership of co-editors Susan Weaver and Melba Elizondo, the staff started off the year by identifying and alphabetizing the class pictures. As the year progressed, the staff could be found writing stories, identifying more pictures, rushing to meet the three deadlines, and checking the printer’s proofs. With advisor Mr. William Hemmen the Ariel Literary Staff has made a genuine effort to make this year's Ariel surpass all others. Row J: P Ryan. S Weaver, W Rogers. M Elizondo. M Vender Movie n. Some of the many important tasks of this staff include: faking charge of the Ariel pre-sale, scheduling all photographs and finding sponsors to supervise the printing, binding and engraving of names on the covers. When all these jobs are completed the day of distribution arrives and oil Business Staff members are on hand until each Saint has his Ariel. The Business Staff is credited with helping with an outstanding Ariel for 1959-60. A’ B B'lveni, M Ketchum, N. While, I. Fcmondex, P. Powell. Row 2: S. Cohf . J- Hd'- K- V No'-non Mr Riordan, P. Under the able direction of Editor Dean Stoops they have managed to focus their cameras on each and every important event of the year. Understaffed as they were (Sointland has had as many a$ seven photographers in past years) their work has kept them in the dark much of the time. Now, positive that they have exposed their last negative, they can take time.out to nurse those flat feet they developed while chasing after that one last shot. Ed'for—DEAN STOOPS 25 D SJOO.IS. P. The Generator, has done an exceptionally good job of reporting school activities throughout the year 1959-1960. Not only have they kept our paper packed with news, but several of the staff members have also contributed articles to the Santa Ana Register. Although they number only eleven strong, the members of the staff have shown outstanding reporting skill, writing news, sports, interviews and features in fine style. Issued 17 times a year to students free of charge, the Generator has been both fun and interesting to read. EDITOR-IN-CHIEF JOHN NIEBLAS â–  1 -S Row 1 J. Gates, V. Grccnia. J luLcns. I Davis, J. All Santa Ana High School students were invited to contribute either poetry or prose to Leaves in the Wind, and the members of the creative writing class were in charge of its publication and distribution. Among these are the activities conducted during the fall semester such as Color Day, the Silver Ball, and the Winter Play. For the fall semester the officers, Brian Silver, president; Linda Leonard, vice-president; and Lynne Davis, secretary; led the seniors with the guidance of Mr. Covington, class advisor. Under the leadership of the seniors, school spirit was at its height up through the football championship and then was extended to the other sports. As the first semester drew to a close, our basketball teams were again leading the Sunset League. The seniors led the student body academically as well. The Honor Society and Honor Roll were the largest in number Santa Ana High has ever had. This senior class will long remember their days at Santa Ana High, and in turn they will long be remembered for their great leadership both socially and academically. Counselors Mr William Roach, Mr. Lawrence West, and Mrs Louise Sonbom. SENIOR ADVISORS Advisor. Mr Herbert Covington SPRING TERM OF THE SENIOR CLASS Under the leadership of the spring semester officers; Jim Davis, President; Kent Soldan, Vice-President; and Susan Gettemy, Secretary; the members of the class of sixty completed their high school education by participating in many exciting and memorable events. Their services are most important to every Junior, and especially to those students planning to attend college. The counselors' duties include advising students on personal problems, advising them about school problems, helping them work out their class schedules, consulting with them about their future education, and checking to see that each student meets his requirements for graduation and college. To all of these counselors we offer our appreciation for their time, effort, and concern. JUNIOR CLASS MR WILSON, Adviior JUNIOR CLASS STORY Even though the Junior Class has been the smallest this year at Saintland, it has played a very important role in everything. It has had a large part in the pep assemblies, the dances, and the exciting football and basketball games. The Junior Class of 1960 has gone a long way under the leadership of Mike Bates, president; Pat Hanigan, vice president; and Joyce Bowman, secretary. Mr. Wilson has also done an excellent job as an advisor. This class has set a fine example both scholastically and socially as Juniors; now they can carry on the fine traditions as Santa Ana High School seniors. MIKE BATES. SOPHOMORE CLASS COUNSELORS Although this year's Sophomore Class ot Santa Ana High School isn't as large as it hos been in previous years, the class counselors still have as much work to do as ever. These three people, Mrs. Sally Gobar, Mr. Robert Anderson, and Mr. Kenneth Cotter, have been doing a great job, advising Saintland students as to which educational paths to follow, straightening out program changes, getting new students settled in the proper classes, and all the other time-consuming jobs held by high school counselors. All in all, the Sophomore Class has much to thank its counselors for. SOPHOMORE CLASS SOPHOMORE CLASS On that exciting day, September 14, 1959, the juniors and the mighty seniors met in the halls of Santa Ana High School with a group of humble sophomores. Their ability was untested and their reputation unmade. They were dubbed lowly.'' Now, however, nearing the close of the school year, it is evident, looking back, what a real asset to the school these sophomores have been. With a fine class adviser, Mr. Melvin McCord, and alert, ambitious members all striving in enthusiastic cooperation toward the definite goals, this class has taken part in many school activities and has efficiently cooperated with the other classes in student body enterprises. During the year the class was led by Chris Wilcox, president; Doug Andrews, vice president; and Barbara Henderson, secretary in all their loyal activities. Helma lives with her mother; her brother Burkhard, who is 18. ond her sister Gerlmde. who is 15, in West Berlin, Germany. Because her family has a small cabin on the Havel River, she often spends her vacation at the river. Helma attends the Eric Hoepner Gymnasium in Berlin Her school is much smaller than ours, having only 500 students German students ore given the chance to specialize in one of four branches. They are Music and Art, Science and Mathematics, Classical languages. and Modern languages. Of these Helma hos chosen to study in the Classical languages Branch. Since the German educational system has thirteen years, Helma will have one more year of high school when she returns to Berlin. After graduation she plans to attend the Free University of Berlin Helma hos enjoyed her year in Santa Ana very much. Since her arrival on August 20, she has made her home with Or ond Mrs E. Linda Leonard American Abroad Student American Field Service, or better known as A.F.S., has been a part of our high school since last year. It is the international scholarship organization through which we are able to hove exchange students in our school. But A.F.S was not always a scholarship organization Started by several young American volunteers in Paris, it worked as a private ambulance service during World War I in France. It continued its work during World War II, this time in Italy and Burma too. During these periods the Americans came in contact with people from different countries, and they discovered how much in common they had and how much- they gained through the better understanding of these people. Therefore, when the war was ended, about five of them tried to bring students over to America to let them have the same experiences and discoveries they found by being in contact with foreign people, so opening a new woy to better world understanding. Starting out with 17 young high school students from Europe in 1947, nobody could say this program would grow and serve its purpose. Today in 1960, 1,525 students from Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia came to the United Stotes, and 1109 young Americans went abroad. These numbers show that the A.F.S. succeeded by having brought a total of 6 424 foreign students to the New World and sending 4,850 Americans abroad. A completely private organization, depending only on the good will of private citizens, the A.F.S. won the support for the State Department. President Eisenhower, who addresses the young foreigners in a yearly conference, realized the importance of American Field Service as a peaceful ambassador serving under its motto. Row I M Phelps. C. Football COACHING STAFF The student body is proud to pay tribute to our coaching stoff for the very outstanding teams produced in all our sports. To watch our smoothly operating teams perform we must recognize and appreciate all of the careful planning, hard work, and practice that is needed to bring the teams to a high degree of perfection shown this year. In addition to the turning out of champion teams the coaches have a greater and more important function, that of teaching good sportsmanship, cooperation, team spirit, and leadership. They must encourage the development of strong bodies and high morals in the team members. This year's successful outcome is attributable to the outstanding ability of our coaches in carry-ing out the above obligations and duties. The Student Body takes this opportunity to thank the coaches for the fine teams we are so proud of and for a job well done. JUNIOR VARSITY JUNIOR VARSITY FOOTBALL As their seven wins and two losses will prove, this year's Junior Varsity football team was one of the finest ever seen at Santa Ana. Each individual player could probably have made the Varsity at any other school in the league; and during the course of the season, many of them did move up to Varsity. In his first year of coaching at Santa Ana, George Spangler handled the team like a veteran of many seasons. The boys rolled up high scores while everyone was getting a chance to play. Perhaps the high point of the season was a 26-6 defeat of an excellent Anaheim team. The J.V.'s made an even greater contribution to the school than winning football games. The tough competition they gave the Varsity on the practice field was one of the prime factors for a great Varsity record. Many of these boys will be back next year, and we can look forward to seeing them as the nucleus for another fine Varsity team. Row 1 Coo h Spongier. B Pc-cz. J. Whitney. B CrowfKer. R. Montano. J. Co-Captolni: Gill Tundog, Dick Whirney -B” FOOTBALL Spirit, determination, and hard work perfectly describes our 1959 B football team. Although their seasonal record of two wins, six losses, and one tie doesn't indicate it, the boys played every game in a manner that would make every Saint proud. Under the fine coaching of Nick Roussos and Chuck Hasley, the boys learned not only to take defeat; but learned teamwork and good sportsmanship, which is just as important as winning football games. The highlight of the season was a 34-13 victory over a good Huntington Beach team. Another bright spot was the 12-7 upset our boys handed Newport Harbor. Newport went on to tie for the championship. With the exception of a 13-13 tie with Western, the other teams prevailed. However, our BY were never out of a game; and with a few breaks could have won them all. This was another highly successful season in terms of mental and physical development for the boys, and one of which we can all be proud. Pow I G Hogar D. Sm.th. T Boltl . D. Allen. G Tundag. Joy Clock C FOOTBALL Fighting stiff competition in the Sunset League, our C football team placed third with a record of five wins and three losses They ployed their best in every game and lost only to the top teams in the league. There were only three returning letfermen. one of which is Gary Elliott who received the award of the most valuable player for the second time. Other outstanding players on the team were Jay Clark who was the most improved player and also co-captain along with Colvin Templeton. Cooch Norton and Coach Ross did an excellent job in developing a team of hard hitters with good sportsmanship and a high morale Opening the season, the Saint C's won their first game against Baldwin Park. Then, they met three of the toughest teams in the league, Western, Newport Harbor, and Anaheim, which they fought hard against to beat, but were finally defeated. Then, however, they advanced forward winning the acmes from Garden Grove, La Habra, and Huntington Beach The final day of football the C's defeated Fullerton, completing a very successful season. During the course of the season, Coach Bob Wilhelm's well-drilled hoopsters captured top honors in the Huntington Beach Tournament and gave numerous other thrills as well as heartaches to their many fans. The biggest heartache came at mid-season when the Red and White were asked to forfeit their games. Most teams would probably have fallen apart; but our boys, led by Captain Kent Soldon, showed their sportsmanship and determination by winning five out of the last seven games. Their two losses were by a total of only four points! Tom Watford, one of the finest basketball players in Saint history, led the team in scoring and was voted Most Valuable Player. Both he and Bill Kinzie were named to the All-League Team. Prospects for next year are good because along with Kinzie, Tony Rojo, the fine playmoking guard, will be returning. Talent is also expected from the members of our excellent Junior Varsity, Bee, and Cee teams. 150 Pew I B Schemer, J T.lfon, T Dominguez, 1 Rojo. J Kocos. F Schrock. B lindstrom. Row 2 J. Acuna. So it, is with this year’s baseball team. Only three lettermen remained from last year's C.I.F. semi-finalists. A nearly impossible task of rebuilding was hurt even further by the loss of several transfers. However, the players showed the hustle and desire which made the season a success in terms of good baseball experience. The green team improved with every game as Coach Bill Ross instructed the boys on the finer arts of baseball and welded them into a unit. Although they didn't win many games, the boys gave us some very exciting moments and made everyone proud to be a Saint. Next year the outlook seems to be much brighter because of the return of many experienced lettermen. If the team of 1961 will display the same ambition, hustle, and sportsmanship as was displayed this year, they should have a great season. Captain • Danny Valenzuela Row I G Shiv.'!. M Cotcoron. Co-captained by Kent Soldan and John Arrison, the squad was bolstered by the seven returning letter-men, with several new additions. One of these, sophomore Mike Lmdsey, pole vaulted an impressive 12 feet 8’ 2 inches,- an outstanding record for a first-year man. In addition to the regular Sunset League meets, the team participated in the annual Santa Ana Relays and the Choffey Invitational, among others. The team has had a very good season this year. The varsity ended the season with a fine record, and the Cs had an outstanding year. With only a few seniors on the team, the varsity should be even better next yeor. Outstanding swimmers on the 1960 team include Dave Fielding, Pete Denis, John Scott, Doug Wall, Bob Widoe, and Wayne Fedden. Toking honors in diving is Alan Batch, who placed fifth in the CIF Invitational Diving Meet. This year’s fine team was guided by Coach Florin Caldwell and cocaptains Dave Fielding and Wayne Fedden. The team had an excellent group of swimmers this year, fith four of its members being placed on the All-Sunset water polo team. These include Dave Fielding, Wayne Fedden, Jim Lowe, and Doug Wall. TENNIS VARSITY TENNIS Santo Ana High School has o right to be proud of their hard working tennis team, led by co-captams Jerry Hurst, ranked fourteenth in Southern Californio, and Doug Mathews, last year's CIF A doubles runner-up. Under the competent coaching of Neal Machander and his assistant, Joe Zeller, the tennis team is well-known for its consistently good record in league and CIF plo . However, the loss of eleven lettermen created quite a challenge to our squad, who hoped possibly to upset a very strong Fullerton team despite a pre-season rating which placed us in second place. At the time of this writing, the Saints had swept Anaheim and Western, beaten Garden Grove, and had just sneaked by a tough Newport squad. Tournament-wise, the tennis team took second in the Fullerton Interscholastic and managed to win the Orange County Invitational. Our J.V. team seemed to have a good chance for the league title, after experiencing a no-loss season in 1959. Here in this comparatively high-powered team is Santa Ana's varsity of the future. Throughout the whole yearbook of 1960 we have tried in some small way to promote a better understanding among the many different nationalities represented in our school and in our nation. A country cannot be strong until its people can live together in harmony. Before it can preach peace to the world, a nation must first stamp out prejudice and achieve peace within. This can only come about through understanding. This year Santa Ana Senior High School had many different countries represented in the student body. Besides our foreign exchange students from Germany and Italy, other students came from Czechoslovakia, Mexico, Japan, China, England, Samoa, Spain, and Canada. This made possible the exchange of many different opinions and ideas in regard to educational systems, customs, recreational activities and cultures. This has helped to bring about a better understanding of other countries and the people of these countries. As leaders of tomorrow, we hope to live in a world of peace. We realize that it is up to us to secure permanent peace which can only come when the whole world recognizes the principle of brotherhood as the answer to all misunderstandings. We hope this Ariel has presented these ideas. 188 â–  )0 SPONSORS Alex Charles Distinctive Hair Styles Allan s Television Al's Sporting Goods Arcade Painters and Stationers Arthur B.
