Text from Pages 1 - 184 of the 1958 volume:

ARIEL 1958 Administration Mr. Lynn H. Crawford, superintendent of Santa Ana Schools, along with the Board of Education, has served endlesi hours to making the school system of Santa Ana the efficient one that it is. Having been a former principal of Santa Ana High, Mr. Crawford well understands the problems that have confronted our school. He will be remembered as a man who has contributed much toward a better way of life for both the youth of the present and the youth of the future. There is not one member of the student body who at one time during the year has not been confronted with the pleasant smile and friendly hello of the principal of Santa Ana High, Mr. Robert S. Farrar. In spite of the fact that the job of being principal is a serious never-ending struggle toward the goal of better education, Mr. Farrar still has time to deal with personal problems and interests of the students of Saintland. Then too the personal attention and advice we received from the faculty at Santa Ana High will be of great value to us throughout our lives. Their endless efforts towards our betterment and education and their friendly co-operation and helpfulness in all school functions and personal problems will never be forgotten. Members of the Board devoted much time and effort determining the rules of student government. Theirs is the responsibility of making decisions concerning the students at Saintland, with the advice of Mr. Farrar and Mr. Trawick. The first big job of the winter Board of Control was the planning of Color Day. Some of the events included wearing of the school colors and the crowning of the queen at the traditional Color Day assembly. Campus Cleanup Week, planned by the Board, resulted in a more attractive campus and community. Also, the Board took the initiative in proposing to the Board of Education that cement be put between the Cafeteria and the Hut. Another first for this Board was the spending of money for awards for the Santa Ana High School Band. They also helped to plan the Vocational Guidance Day under the supervision of Mr. Covington. This group of fine workers certainly set a good example for future Boards of Control. SECRETARY: Joan Wheat VICE-PRESIDENT: Joe Longford PRESIDENT: Gordon McClymont SECOND ROWi N. Boiler. As the spring semester opened in January, the student body was assured of good school government by its newly elected student body officers. After the excitement of election week, with its campaign banners and poster, its slogans, and speeches, its cards and handbills, its elations and disappointments, school life settled back to normal. Heading school government for the second semester were Dave Kenmuir, Student Body President; Larry Steffens, Vice-President; and Sandy Sorensen, Secretary. During their term the Board of Control members were kept busy with the planning of all school assemblies. They sponsored the talent assembly, the election assembly, all pep assemblies, and the awards assembly. This was in addition to their regular job of supervising all student activities. One of their last official duties was to choose the coming year's pep squad. June saw the completion of jobs well done by these second semester student body officers. The girls of Santa Ana High elected Susan Palmer, President; Della Kahn, Vice-President; Sheila Akin, Secretary; and Shirley Henderson, Treasurer for the winter semester. Heading the cabinet second semester were Kathy Gerrard, President; Nancy Basler, Vice-President; Barbara Watson, Secretary; and Brenda Babbit, Treasurer. The first semester's cabinet was very active. Some of the duties included the Sophomore Tea, the New Students’ Dinner, the Girls' League Assembly, the Color Day Football Dance, and decorating the tree in the foyer at Christmas. Second semester, the girls in the school saw another assembly and, of course, one of the biggest events o fthe year, the Co-ed. The Co-ed Out of This World was one of the biggest and most successful dances of the year. To these girls we extend our congratulations for a year full of wonderful activities. •I, G. TenEyck, S. Colorful stripes, artistic pictures or cartoons can be attributed to this staff. The beautiful design on the cover is also a product of the Art Staff. The whole Ariel Art staff has done a splendid job and deserves much praise and congratulations. EDITOR: Virginia Dunn CO-EDITOR; Marilyn Junkermaier SECOND ROW: S. RuSttJI. N. Botlcr, J. Dovil, J. Hart, Mr. Hcmmen 'S A EDITOR: Barbora Watson This year the Ariel Literary Staff has worked harder than ever before in an effort to make the 1957-58 Ariel the most outstanding yearbook we have ever had. We have this staff to thank for the sixteen additional pages in this year's Ariel. Few of os really know the routine'' work that goes into the production of a yearbook. We never see the behind-the-scene typing, alphabetizing, proofreading, and other work that goes on every day. Stories, captions, identification of pictures, and layout changes — all these are the work of the Literary Staff. Much of the credit for the success of this year's Ariel is due to the editor, Barbara Watson, and the advisor, Mr. Hemmen. Ariel 19 Ariel Business Sto Under the capable direction of the advisor, Mr. Grafsch, and the editor, Sharon Boling, the Ariel Business Staff had a very prosperous year. This efficient group started off the first semester by securing sponsors. Soon it was presale time, which is a very big responsibility for the staff members. At the end of the year, the Business Staff members conducted the final Ariel Distribution. All this could not have been accomplished without the wonderful co-operation of this fine group. EDITOR: Sharon Boling SECOND ROW: N. Whit., H. Wode FIRST ROW: S. Boling, C. San-tone, B lindttrom, D. Bower, T. Carlyle, B. Crum, T. Petert, C. Calkin, Mr. Grattch. What a dull and uninteresting Ariel this would be if we had no pictures in it. Thanks to Mr. Peet, advisor; Ed Baum, editor; and his staff members, Alan Leonard, Tom Dodson, and Dennis Franklin, we have a much more entertaining Ariel. These boys were constantly on the job both on and off campus. Taking casual shots, pictures of our school, different gym classes, clubs, and athletic events were some of their many jobs. Also, the scheduling of senior pictures and faculty photos came under this department. The staff played a very essential and praiseworthy part in the making of our 1958 Ariel. Mr. Peer. E. Baum, A. Leonard, T. Dodion, D. Franklin. EDITOR: Ed Baum Ariel Photography Generator The duties of a school newspaper, as of any publication, are to inform, entertain, and publicize. The Generator of Santa Ana High School, under the able editorship of Don Andersen, and the advisorship of Mr. Ralph Jack, has done its best to carry out these duties. During the school year, the students were kept up to date on the goings on of the administration, social happenings, sport triumphs, and student achievements. In addition to informing the Saints, the Generator and its staff also entertained them. The paper faithfully notified the student body concerning what to wear, the price of tickets, and recognized traditions of the dances of the year. Any school would be proud to have as fine a school paper as we do. The whole staff deserves a lot of credit for a fine year of publication. THIRD ROW: B. Chrlitianwfo. R. Skowtky, T. M t 9 r. A. Included in these are Color Day, the Co-ed, the Student Body Picnic, the Senior Play, the Prom, and Senior Ditch Day. For the fall semester, the seniors elected Alan Alford, president; Lowell Cummings, vice-president; and Sandy Sorensen, secretary. Officers for the spring semester were Jerry Ducot, president; Bucky Haugen, vice-president; and Pat Henryson, secretary. The seniors of 1958 are both happy and sad to be leaving Santa Ana High School — happy because they are entering their chosen fields: business, college, or marriage, and sad because the three years at Saintland have been so enjoyable. They bequeath their honored position to the juniors, and say to them, Carry on the great traditions of the senior class which we have helped perpetuate. ADVISOR: Mr. John Wilton PRESIDENT. Under the attentive supervision of their officers Sid Cohen, President; Cindy Calkins, Vice-President; Judy Suttle, Secretary; and their class advisor, Mr. Melvin McCord, the class of fifty-nine made many advances. They were extremely loyal supporters of all our athletic events, dramatic productions, and choral programs, as well as the multiple of other Saintland activities. The class of fifty-nine will be one of the biggest senior classes Santa Ana High has ever seen, yet with their fine spirit, ambitions, and drive, they can certainly do a fine job of upholding the traditions of the senior class. The class officers Jim Davis, President; Terry Carlyle, Vice-President; and Judy Blower, Secretary were well chosen and have done a fine and commendable job. Sophomores were seen in great abundance at school dances and stage productions. They have also added their fine talents to clubs and the standards of our school. These sophomores are more than ready to follow in the footsteps of the juniors and seniors in carrying on the fine traditions of Saintland. They will be a good example for the incoming lower classmen in behavior and citizenship. Saintland is proud of her sophomores and hopes they will keep up the good work. Color Day Color Day this year provided fun and entertainment for every citizen of Saintland. Regular dress regulations were relaxed for the day, and many Saints attended school in costume. All wore the traditional colors of red and white. Beginning the day's activities, which were planned by the Board of Control, was the Color Day assembly. It was opened by a ''Presidential Proclamation declaring the day set apart from all others in order to increase the already strong school spirit. Cheer leaders, song leaders, and the school band were called upon to perform during the assembly. Also featured were the costume contest, with prizes given for the best costumes; the hilarious kangaroo court; and, of course, the highlight of the assembly, the crowning of the Color Day queen and her two princesses. Noontime brought more fun. Parading down the streets along the campus came the Saint Band, followed by enthusiastic student supporters. A pie-eating contest was then held on Clayton Field, with the representative of the senior class finally emerging as the victor. Finishing noontime activities was an outdoor pep rally which featured cheer leaders, song leaders, band, majorettes, flag fwirlers, and drill team. The Color Day football game was played that evening, with half-time activities including a presentation of the Color Day queen and her two princesses. After the game the Color Day dance, sponsored by Girls' League, provided a perfect conclusion to the day of fun. Athletics Coaches The dictionary defines a coach as an instructor of athletics; however, it fails to mention the important details of the responsibility of the job. Many people regard the coach as just someone who teaches their boys to play a sport. Although they are right in this respect, they forget that it is also the coach's job to teach sportsmanship, co-operation, and the ability to work with other people, preparing them for life in the future. The parents of the boys on the school teams have to depend on the coach to teach their boys something that can be learned only through sports. To this man goes the credit for the morale of our boys and the respect for someone who devotes half of his time to the building of our youth. The student body of Santa Ana High owes a great deal of credit to our great coaches who led us on when the going was rough, who planned every move our teams made, and who stuck by us through thick and thin. We pay a great tribute to these men who have served us so well. t • t • Being chosen Saint of the Week is a great honor for the boys on the varsity football team. It indicates that the boy who receives this honor was an outstanding and inspiring factor for his team. Each week of the football season this honor goes to the boy who excelled in these qualities during the game preceding that week. SECOND ROW: H Mwikk. L. MeKnight. E. Engmon, N. Machander. ■ Beck, W. Varsity Football Football is one of the roughest, toughest, most unpredictable sports as was proved to the Saints this year. The 57 varsity squad, coached by Lester Bus McKnight, had the brain and man power to build up a winning team but they didn't have the breaks. Due to injuries and influenza in the early games, many of our finest players were forced to drop out for the remaining portion of the season. In the first game of the season with Riverside, a nonleaguer, the Saints bowed out with a gallant loss, Riverside 33 — Santa Ana 12. The following game with Orange ended in a different way with an easy win for Santa Ana, 31-0. Back on the other end of the see saw, Santa Ana dropped to Huntington Beach, 26-7. The season had its thrills at the La Habra game when the Saints scored the winning touchdown in the last few minutes of play, leaving the score Santa Ana 14—La Habra 13. Then came the heartbreaker, the game with Fullerton that set the stands and the team to weeping when the Big Red failed to shove the ball only six inches to victory — Fullerton 12, Santa Ana 7. Nothing but sadness followed as the Saints continued to lose, dropping their last four games — Garden Grove 14, Santa Ana 13; Claremont 20, Santa Ana 7; Anaheim 17, Santa Ana 0; Newport 7, Santa Ana 6. On the field and on the bench, every heart was in each game. The varsity squad of 1957 should feel proud of their will to fight and their ability to carry through in the toughest situations. The Little Saints, coached by Jack Pickering and Rollo Beck, had a team with great playing potential, but it wasn't until the final games that they attained it. There were two main reasons for this. First and most important, the team was hard hit by influenza in the middle of the season, losing many of its first stringers and four league games. Second, weakness was found in the team's offense in earlier games, but the problem was solved as the backs gained experience and blossomed as the season ended. The Saints started off their season with a 1-1 pre-season record, losing to Riverside, 24-6, but clobbering Orange, 21-6. In Sunset League competition, the B's trounced Huntington Beach, 35-0, but were edged by La Habra, 20-13. Thus, the flu bug started to bring defeat,-Fullerton 25, Santa Ana O. Next were Garden Grove and Anaheim, defeating us 34-12 and 13-0, respectively. In a mid-season nonleague game, the Saints scrounged Claremont, 33-19. Completing the season, Newport was defeated, 26-13, as the Saints played their best game. THIRD ROW. J. Farr, C. Miller, R. Stewart, P. Greene, J. Cunningham, M. Hoyt, S. Perrymon, H. Hardeman, N. With only two returning lettermen as a nucleus, coach Wilson and assistant coach Nick Roussos developed a team of hard fighters with good spirit and high morale. The team played its best in every game, losing only to the teams which placed first and second in the league. Standouts in this year's edition of the C's were co-captains Tommy Slaughter and Hector Correa, along with the co-winners of the most valuable player award, Rudy Miranda and Ted Jonas. High point man for the team was Bobby Campos, who scored six touchdowns. All players did an excellent job on both offense and defense. The Saints started off the season in an excellent manner, defeating Orange 25-7. Then, in the league opener, they proceeded to edge Huntington Beach 7-6. In their match with league winning La Habra, the Saints were ousted 21-0 but came back to tie Garden Grove and Fullerton 7-7 and 14-14, respectively. Then came the day the Saints had been waiting for, the day they edged arch-rival Anaheim, 6-0. In the final game of the season, they yielded to tough Newport 19-7. SECOND ROW: R. Roldon, D. Wolker. In the won-lost column, the end of the season showed five wins and four losses. After dropping the first game to Riverside 14-0 in 104 degree heat, the team gained a game from Orange by forfeit. Then an epidemic of influenza struck, making it necessary to forfeit to Huntington Beach. When back to full strength, we won two consecutive games from La Habra and Garden Grove, 12-0 and 18-0, respectively. The team then went into a slump during which Fullerton and Anaheim won 27-14 and 28-7. At the height of a great comeback, the team played their best game of the season against Western High, who had recently defeated both Fullerton and Anaheim — score 20-7, the Saints on top. To close the season, Newport forfeited to us. Coaches Engman and Musick did a fine job with the boys and the fruits of their labors will appear on another fine Varsity team next year. SECOND ROW. One of the biggest reasons is that Saintland watched our Varsity Bosketballers march off with the Sunset League Trophy and into CIF playoffs. The boys on the varsity fought hard for the title and had the support of every enthusiastic basketball fan in Saintland. Opening league play, the team tramped La Habra and Huntington Beach, 61-36, and 57-34, respectively. However, a crowd of avid, screaming fans helped bring in a close win over Fullerton in the third game of the season — score, 43-42. Next we zoomed past Garden Grove, 61-40, and defeated Anaheim 48-42. In what was supposed to be the game of the season we easily defeated Newport Harbor 58-47, and ended the first half of league play as the only undefeated team in the Sunset League standings. In the second half of play. La Habra and Huntington Beach again fell to us, 61-39, and 55-34, respectively. Fullerton was out for blood when we met the Indians for the second time and defeated us 50-44. Our Saints then took Garden Grove and found themselves facing vengeful Anaheim. They ceded their second defeat 38-46. A crucial game with Newport High ended the season. To win this game meant the Sunset League crown, to lose meant a four-way tie with Fullerton, Anaheim, and Newport Harbor. Our mighty men did not fail us as we massacred Newport 71-371 Advancing to the CIF finals we were defeated 47-52 by Compton, who went on to win the CIF Central Group championship. The excitement, the fun, and the fresh outdoors lend themselves to America s greatest sport. Baseball takes good, clean players and true sportsmanship. All this we had this year partly due to our coaches who have given of their valuable time and energy to teach our boys the inside story of baseball. Santa Ana s baseball team this year has shown the rooters in the stands a good season with their playing ability and their the-game-isn t-over-until-the-last-man-is-out” attitude. They upheld the name of Saintland in proving to the outsiders that Santa Ana still has great sportsmanship and great athletes. r CAPTAIN: lorry Vincent STANOING: Cooch Wilhelm, G. Sawyer, J. Co-Coptainss Earl Morley, Don Braden Any group of boys can make a team but it takes a certain group of boys to make a winning team, and that group was Santa Ana s track teams. With our Cross-Country team taking the Sunset League Championship and our Varsity B and C fighting all the way, we can be certain that we have boys with spirit and ambition. Coaches ■'Pinky'' Greene, Earl Engman, and Rollo Beck proved that they knew their boys and their business when they began training these swift athletes for the big races. They took a group of boys and molded them into track stars, breaking records, and bringing in the medals. Running so hard that they collapsed at the end of a race, each boy gave his heart for each race. When they saw that big tape looming out in front of them, our boys had that extra spurt to take them across the finish line ahead. Track and Santa Ana made a good partnership this year with the ever-needed help of our coaches and our high-spirited boys. Track 148 Bee Cee Track FIFTH ROW; B. O'Compo, J. Cunningham, F. Peoiley, D. Varsity Swimmincj All our swimming teams have stood out this year with their many fine accomplishments. The boys have been ably coached by Mr. John Wilson and the co-captains, Jerry Smith and Steve Selindh. The first meet of the season set the pace for the Saint swimmers. In this meet the Saints defeated Riverside in a thriller that was decided by the final relay. A truly outstanding achievement was made by Curt Vaught this year. Curt won the varsity diving championship at the C.I.F. Invitational Swim Meet. Along with our fine varsity, the B and C teams showed much promise for the 1958-59 season. Consistent point winners this year included: Tracy Smith, Cal Foland, Jerry Smith, Ed Schwarm, Steve Selindh, Bill Bruns, Roy Ross, Joe Ohlgren, Jeff Garner, Curt Vaught, Dave Fielding, Alan Balch, Gary Peterson, and Alan Macauley. Coach Neal Machander, with the aid of co-captains Terry Rhodes and Joe Langford, worked the saints info machine-like precision. Under the leadership of Guy Archambault, the team's number one player, the racquetmen's chances of retaining the championship were rated as excellent. Our Saint Tennis team showed outstanding ability this year. In pre-season play, the Saints had an almost unblemished record in duel meets, losing to the powerful Redlands University squad. The Saint netmen won their first four tournamepts: the Fullerton Interscholastic, the Arroyo Invitational, the El Monte Interscholastic, and the Orange County Invitational. The Junior Varsity, supported with many up and coming juniors and sophomores, appeared in fine shape. Having gone undefeated in pre-season play, the J.V.'s showed that they were strong contenders for the Junior Varsity Title. These top teams have made an excellent record for Santa Ana High. The sports our Sally Saints participated in included tennis, swimming, basketball, hockey, volleyball, and baseball. In addition, a new afterschool class in badminton has been offered under the instruction of Miss Lee Humphrey. Modern Dance, under the supervision of Miss Nancy Boyd, has been very popular this year. Careful planning by the G.A.A. Board and their advisors, Mrs. Marilyn McMillan, Mrs. Beverly Romero, Miss Lee Humphrey, and Miss Nancy Boyd, resulted in many interesting activities including a winter and a spring party and several playdays. More girls than ever before turned out for after-school sports and joined G.A.A. The increased participation of more girls of Santa Ana High made 1957-1958 a very exciting and entertaining year for girls' sports. Mi lee Humphrey GA.A. Board 154 THIRD ROW: N. Bo ler. S. Rowell.
