A$ Superintendent of Santa Ana City Schools, Mr. Lynn H. Crawford beheld with pride the growth of our educational system. Being a former principal of our school, he could be justifiably proud as its enrollment soared to an all time high of 1,924 students. Mr. Crawford, with the members of the Board of Education, is a main support of our school. The tireless devotion of these men to our school has aided tremendously to our school. Their job is not one of glory and honor, but without their behind-the-scenes supervision, Saintland could not have continued to advance. 10 The success of any organization depends on its administration, and Santa Ana High School's accomplishments bear witness to its fine administrative system. Members of the faculty, especially those in advisory positions, are always ready to help students in any way they can. Their genuine interest in the welfare of the school can be seen as they continue to work toward better education. Mr. Robert S. Farrar, principal of Santa Ana High School, is well known to all members of the Student Body. His friendly and personal attitude toward the students and their activities has made him popular as well. In the responsible position of coordinator and supervisor of the school program, he has shown himself to be a man of great character. Mrs. Mirrle Bouchey Social Counselor Mr. George Herron Registrar Miss Helen Kirkland Girls' Vice-Principal 12 Mr. Herbert Covington Vocotionol Guidance Mr. Edward Black Business Counselor Miss Carol Becker Nurse Herbert Covington The Faculty Our faculty was made up of seventy-five members; nineteen were new to the school this year. The increased enrollment added much to their olready-busy schedule, for in addition to their regular teaching duties, they really showed their interest in the school by sponsoring various campus clubs and chaperoning at social events. Because of their guidance and assistance the students have had much enjoyment in the past school year. Henry Aguilera Edward Black William Cole Jack Coleman Edsel Collier Clyde Cook . The highlight of their term, however, was directing traditional Color Day activities with the Color Day assembly, crowning of the Queen, and Kangaroo Court. From there, the officers moved ahead to plan all the pep rallies. A change in the Student Body Constitution was proposed during the semester, whereby the Commissioner of Student Relations would be elected each semester instead of annually, and the amendment was voted into effect by the Student Body. The officers for the first semester were Gary Steffens, president; Keith Welputt, vice-president; and Judy Jefferies, secretary. Having to their credit a term of great accomplishment, these officers turned their offices over to the incoming officers. 20 Vice-President Keith Welputt Secretary Judy Jefferies BOARD OF CONTROL FIRST ROW: V. One of the highlights of their term was the noon dances in the hut on Fridays. This was the trial run for such an idea, and it proved worthwhile. The Board directed the annual talent assembly and managed numerous other enjoyable activities. The officers, David Quisling, President; John Martin, Vice-President; and Ruth Levickas, Secretary,- and the entire Board of Control, completed a very successful year. 21 STUDENT RELATIONS COMMITTEE FIRST ROW: J. Girls's league Right from the beginning of the year, the Girls' League entered into a busy schedule with the Sophomore Tea. This was followed by the New Students' Dinner given in co-sponsorship with the Key Club and Jay Bees. Highlights of the Girls' League Assembly were a talk by Rev. Dennis Savage and some student entertainment. Smoothly-staged events during the year were such things as the decoration of the Christmas tree in the foyer; the Girls' League - Key Club - Faculty Basketball Game; and the elections. Of course, for the girls there was the Co-ed Dance. To round out their activities were the Girls' Assembly and the New Girls' Dinner. June Bryfe • Penny Norton GIRLS LEAGUE CABINET FIRST ROW: J. The staff, working with their advisor, Mr. Ralph Jack, started with the taking of the senior pictures. As the year went on, the work included typing identifications for all pictures; writing stories; and checking the printer's proof. All this behind-the-scenes activity was accomplished by the deadlines with the cooperation of the entire staff. Leslie Jones ARIEL LITERARY STAFF FIRST ROW: Mr. Jock. H Adams, A. Berol. B. Sides S. When anyone mentioned the fine athletic department at Santa Ana High School, the thoughts that came into our minds were of our excellent staff. All through the year these men were on the job, training students in the various phases of sportsmanship. In this way they brought our school into the very top rank among high schools in this area. And so to these coaches we shall continue to pay tribute for their fine work. Whether a head coach or one of the many necessary assistants, their efforts were appreciated. 76 Football VARSITY FOOTBALL FIRST ROW: K. Larson. K. Hulberf. A. Gar nor. R. Rodriquez. P. Topping. M. Despite a returning squad of only ten lettermen, the Saint Varsity provided a season with plenty of rough and tumble action and exciting plays with the new balanced offense. Using the ten returning lettermen as a nucleus; Coach Lester (Bus) McKnight in his eleventh year as coach, developed a squad of hard fighters who, although lacking experience at first, improved as the season progressed. After dropping their two pre-season games, the Saints were sparked into high gear just before the league opened by three fine senior leaders, Larry Bjorklund, Elnorse Gates, and Gary Steffens. All three did an excellent job on both offense and defense. This spark soon became a flame and the Big Saints emerged from Sunset League competition with a win-loss record of 4-3, good enough for fourth place. The Saints lost their pre-season games 35-0 and 19-0 to two tough teams. Riverside and Chaffey. They bounced back hard, trouncing La Habra in the league opener, 26-7. After being overpowered by Fullerton, 20-6, the Saints retaliated by taking Garden Grove, 13-0. Following a 41-14 defeat by Anaheim, Santa Ana blanked Orange, 33-0, and Newport Harbor, 20-0. The Big Red, however, yielded in the Color Day game to Huntington Beach, 31-7. In Sunset League competition our little Saints had four wins, two losses, and one tie. This record was god enough for third place behind champion Newport Harbor and runner-up Garden Grove. Coach Jack Pickering said that our team started slow but was very good by the end of the season. Many of the opposing coaches said that our Saints were one of the toughest teams they faced, and Saint halfback Bernard Young was one of the best B halfbacks they had seen. The Saints opened the season by thumping Chaffey's Tigers in their pre-league game, 20-7. In the first league game they were defeated by La Habra 18-8. In their third game the Saints handed Fullerton a 20-0 setback. They played Garden Grove to a 7-7 tie. Anaheim forfeited their game. The Saints won 6-0 from Orange. Our team then lost a 19-7 battle to league champion Newport Harbor. They ended the season on a happy note by defeating Huntington Beach, 19-13. Bernard Young Captain FIRST ROW C. Down. R Jones. W. The Saints dropped one game to Anaheim; tied Orange and Newport Beach; and beat Huntington Beach, La Habra, Fullerton, and Garden Grove. Two of the most outstanding players were left-halfback Al Odenath and right-halfback Louie Olivos, who later received varsity letters. The usual starting line-up was as follows: left end, Don Lutz; left tackle, Manuel Penaflor; left guard, Charles Muse,- center, Larry Miller; right guard, Mike Mitchell; right tackle, Mike Tschantz; right end. Among the outstanding performers was John Zimplemann, who helped to break up several close ball games with long runs. Ralph Bunch and Larry Spencer also were tough linemen on defense as were ends Nick Cantu and Ernie Lima. The team, while it did not win the league title, gave every opponent a tough battle; and their coach, John Wilson, was extremely proud of the showing of the Little Saints. 82 FIRST ROW: Coach Wilson, E. lister, M. Basketball Captain Bub Motncy The 1956-57 Saint Varsity basketball team had a highly competitive season. Although they had a keen desire to capture the league pennant, opposition proved to be too strong for the boys and their new coach, Bob Wilhelm. They emerged with a win-loss record in the Sunset League of 8-6 for third place. The Sammies got off to a slow start, dropping five of their nine pre-season games. Participating in the Beverly Hills Tournament, the Big Red came out with a 2-2 record, fourth place, and the honor of having one player. Milt Burleson, elected to the all-tournament second team. During the first round of league play, the Saints compiled three wins and four losses and provided many thrills in such games as the 57-56 victory over Orange. In the second round an impressive 5-2 record was run up by the varsity. Exciting and memorable games of the second round were the defeat of Garden Grove, 37-36, and the loss to Orange in a double overtime, 52-50. Many outstanding players sparked the Saints to victory; among these were Bub Matney, captain; Joe Lynch, most valuable player; and Milt Burleson, high scorer with an average of 11.5 points per game. Baseball Captain Bill Grots With eight returning lettermen as a nucleus for their 1957 hopes, the Saint Varsity baseball team turned in a very good season of ball playing again this year. The Saints were ably led by Coach Ken Moats and Captain Bill Gross. At the start of the season Coach Moats was aiming his club towards one of the top two positions in the Sunset League race. Our Saints had a good pitching staff led by Lynn Stucker and Larry Vincent. The hitting on this club was a little better than average, with some of the top stickers being Bill Mott, Nat Glover, Jerry Burns, and Larry Vincent. Whenever they could get their hitting and pitching together, the Saints provided plenty of exciting action. The Saints opened the Sunset League season by meeting La Habra and then Garden Grove at home. Anaheim, Hunt-ington Beach, and Newport Harbor were the next Saint opponents when the Saints were on a three-game road trip. They finished up the first round of play by taking on Orange and Fullerton at Saintland. In the second round the schedule was the same, but the game locations were reversed. FIRST ROW: R. Pion, N. They were coached by Bob Wilhelm. The team had a good pitching staff led by Don Crabtree, Aubrey Howze, and Pete Stegall. The leading hitters on the club were Lowell Cummings, Bernard Young, Glenn Gellatly, and Gary Sawyer. One of the weak points was in-perience at some key positions. The Saints opened the Sunset League by playing La Habra and later Garden Grove on our diamond. Then they were away from home for three games playing Anaheim, Huntington Beach, and Newport Harbor. The J.V.'s finished up the first round by taking on Orange and Fullerton at home. In the second round they played the same schedule with a reverse in playing fields. FIRST ROW: B. Tewell. 0. Track Under the capable instruction of head track coach Reece Pinky Greene, Santa Ana High School produced a track team that made everyone sit up and take notice. With the help of returning lettermen, the team was molded into a well-working and smooth-running team that proved to be tough competition to others in the already tough Sunset League. Hopes that were bright from the very beginning of the season never waned, and records continued to fall before the competitors of various divisions. Saintland can truly be proud of its trackmen. Guy Archambault, sophomore, headed up a strong varsity group as the Saints moved into league competition. Although the squad graduated most of its lettermen last year, many returning players from last year's undefeated junior varsity team added strength. Prominent among the Saints were Tom Morris, Dick Carr, Terry Rhodes, Bob Cruz, Ed Mounce, and Joe Langford. McMillan, Mrs. Harper, Miss Boyd. Girls' Athletic Association, under the guidance of advisors Miss Zeno Leek, Miss Nancy Boyd, Mrs. Margaret Harper, and Mrs. Marilyn McMillan, has had an unusually busy year. The two capable presidents, Valerie Gish and Roberta Graham, brought the inter-school Volleyball Playday to Santa Ana High School as well as traditional parties and Sports Nights. Basketball ♦ - Seniors 108 Winter Secretary Shoron George Winter Vice-president Carol Henson Spnng Vice-president David Smith Spring Secretary Tony Keimel With three years of fun, work, preparation for the years ahead — the class of 1957 was ready to graduate! Their stay at Santa Ana High School endowed them with many capabilities. Leaving behind them any traits of irresponsibility, the seniors moved ahead to join the world of adults as mature young men and women. They looked back with fond memories on the years spent here and the good times they had together, but the future held a wonderful promise for them. They saw opportunities beckoning from the road ahead. Eagerly the seniors awaited the happiness in store for them in the years to come. John H. They participated in all school activities, especially in the Talent Show, Sports Night, athletics, assemblies, and dances, in addition to the functions of our student government. Many Juniors excelled in scholastic achievements which brought honor not only to themselves, but to the whole class. Truly one of their most gratifying rewards was selecting and displaying their class rings. The officers, their advisor, and the entire class of '58 can be proud of these achievements. 132 lynn Stucker, President; Kathy Gerrord, Secretary; Bill Mott. to be called Saints. They have taken an active part in student affairs, maintained school spirit, and elected capable class officers to represent them in student government. Under the leadership of their class adviser, Mr. Melvin McCord, the sophomores have taken important steps toward becoming outstanding upperclassmen. 144 Vera Garcia.
