They take note of various class problems as a whole, and find out what can be done to correct or to improve these conditions. These students also act as assistants of the administrative staff in that they report any student's misconduct or violations of school rules that occur on the campus. They help make satisfactory changes according to students' requests and help to carry out these changes to the best of their ability. Each girl automatically becomes a member upon registration. After the election of its officers, the cabinet and committees are chosen with the guidance of the advisers, Mrs. Mirrle Bouchey and Miss Helen Kirkland. Launching a highly successful year, the Girls’ League opened with a fashion show and tea for all sophomore girls. The dinner for new students was held several days later, followed by the football dance after the color day game. They also sponsored an assembly for the girls and a drive to help the needy at Christmas time. Starting off the second semester was the dinner for new girls. The annual Co-ed Dance followed next, and the year's activities ended with an entertaining girls' assembly. Presidents: Janet Hurd, Anne Croddy Fifth row: 1. Robbms, M. Brogan, K. This hard-working staff, whose editor, Marilyn Zerlaut, has been responsible for the cover and the entire layout of the book. All cartoons and designs were turned out by the Art Staff. This staff, working along with all the rest of the Ariel Staffs, can be proud of the 1956 Ariel. Second row: M. Zcrlout, J. Noth, 0. Deraga. First row: S. Palmer, P. Johnson, I. Kite, Mrs. Foy. ariel literary staff A great deal of time and diligence has been contributed by the 1955-56 Ariel Literary Staff in an effort to make this year's Ariel surpass all others. Writing stories, proof reading, and seeing that all pictures, stories, and names correspond, are among the numerous duties this staff performs. The success of this Ariel is due largely to the competent guidance of the staff adviser, Mrs. Louise Sanborn, and the editor, Beverly Woolley. Beverly Woolley Third row. A. Bagwell, T. lindley, J. They had the responsibility of planning the yearbook pre-sale, securing sponsors, and scheduling the taking of pictures. The Staff also planned the final sale of yearbooks and supervised their distribution. Under the capable direction of Editor Dorothy Peterson and Mr. Black, their adviser, the Staff devoted much time and effort towards making the ‘55-'56 Ariel a financial success. Third row: 8. Croddy ariel photography staff The Ariel Photography Staff has done much of which to be proud. The admiration of its work has been expressed time and time again by members of the student body. Top leadership was available through Dennis Starleaf, editor, and Mr. Peet, adviser. On hand at every event, the staff has helped produce one of the finest Ariels yet to be placed in our book of memories. We would like to thank them for their hard work. Dennis Starleaf Second row: Mr. Peet, H. Serai, G. Taylor, 0. Starleaf First row: D. Manning, B. Crutchfield, B. Jab , E. Baum generator staff The Generator Staff has done a fine job this year, putting out the news that we all like to read. This year's staff has had Nancy Emig and Don Clark as their very capable editors-in-chief. Mr. Potter has been the Generator adviser. There is much more to getting a paper out than just the printing. There are pictures to be taken, stories to be written, deadlines to be met. The Generator Staff did all these things, making the Generator interesting and fun to read. Editors: Nancy Emig the scribblers Under the supervision of Mrs. Mirrle Bouchey, this year's creative writing class came forth with “The Scribblers, a column which appeared in the last semester's issues of the Generator. Instead of a book of literary compositions, these examples of prose and verse were published in the school newspaper after having been compiled by Beverly Showalter and Dennis Starleaf, student editors. The Scribblers was a fine example of the belletristic talent of Santa Ana s creative writing class and their efforts were enthusiastically received by the student body. Third row: C. Morgon, A. SENIOR CLASS Another senior class, robed in cap and gown, walks forward to receive their diplomas, keys to future success and happiness. They are sad at leaving, but thoughts of the new and perhaps better things to come spur them on. Ability, spirit, and talent name just a few qualities exhibited by the Senior Class of 1956. These qualities were cultivated with the help of Mr. Elliott, class adviser, who worked with them for three long years. May their imprint, left on the sands of time, be respected, admired, remembered, and appreciated for many years to come. We pay tribute to the Senior Class of 1956. seniors Fall Secretary: Jean Venners. Vice President: Mike Gonzales. When a junior class shows the school spirit, leadership, and capabilities that the class of '57 has, there is no mistaking a great senior class to come. The year's activities for the juniors began with the purchase of class rings. From there they gave credit to the school as they competed in school athletics and showed their talents as members of the musical and dramatic groups. Under the guidance of Mr. Herbert Covington, the Junior Class has moved ahead to take an active part in all school activities. This, along with their experience in student government, will enable them to run an efficient school government next year. 60 John Adkins, lindolou Adolphsen Freddie, Agumogo, Noncy Allen Pawl Allen, Morgie Ambrose Harold Anderson, Jean Anderson Judith Anderson, lorry Anderson Mary Anderson, Tom Andorson Kenny Andrews, lorry Area Barbara Arondell, Cheryll Atwood Pot Austin. The nucleus of the staff remained the same as last year's with the gaps being filled by qualified and experienced young men who were anxious to carve their marks into the coaching profession. Bus McKnight again guided the Varsity football team to a fine season and a second place finish in the tough Sunset League. Coach McKnight, in addition to developing a successful Cee basketball team, also handled the chores of Director of Competitive Athletics and took charge of spring football. Rollo Beck was kept busy as Varsity backfield coach, assistant track coach, and head of the physical education department. Coach Reece Greene, given good material, again provided Santa Ana with an excellent track team. He also headed the cross country squad. A new man, Ken Moats, handled both the Junior Varsity football team and the Varsity baseball team, and throughout the year he proved himself to be an exceptionally fine coach. Don Liebhart with hard work developed a fine Varsity basketball team, which ended its season with the best record a Santa Ana High School team has had since 1951. He also coached Junior Varsity basketball and baseball. Jack Pickering, a former Saint football and basketball star, showed good coaching promise as he piloted the Bee football and basketball teams. His squads always featured all out hustle and team play. Coach Bill Cole, a real favorite on the Saint campus, kept his hand in the coaching game by acting as assistant Bee football coach and also working in the spring football program. John Wilson as usual produced a fine swimming team which proved itself worthy of the highest honors. He also coached Cee football, with the assistance of Jim Sendo. Neal Machander was in charge of the tennis squad for the first time and with great material his team proceeded to come up with win after win. The Saint golf team, coached by Bill Foote, has developed a winning habit through the years. This past year proved to be no exception. 130 saints of the week Dave Hurlburt Left Half Captain For the third consecutive year, the Saint varsity football squad under head coach Lester Bus McKnight placed second in the Sunset League. In preleogue warm-up, the Saints lost the opener with Riverside 27-13 and defeated Chaffey 14-13. After Jim Meeks Center Captain Johnny Allen Fullback knocking down Orange 18-6, the Saints yielded to Anaheim 32-7. The team rebounded with a thrilling 24-20 win over Garden Grove and was tied by Fullerton 0-0. Turning 13 into a lucky number, the determined squad defeated Newport Harbor and Huntington Beach, both by a 13-12 score. Non-league Santa Monica closed the season by handing down an 18-7 defeat. Determined to finish the season in victory, the Little Saints worked up to it by first battling Newport Harbor to a 6-6 tie and then finally by turning down Huntington Beach 19-15. Thirty-eight football spirited team members turned out to moke the season s record 4-2-1. The Cee's had victories over Orange, Huntington Beach, Garden Grove and Valencia. Probably, although not a victory, the most well ployed and hard fought gome was with Anaheim which ended in a tie. According to the coach. John Wilson, one of their best games was the last one which was with Huntington Beach. The Cee's walked off the playing field with a score of 25-7 which was a very happy ending to all for the season. Although the team had no regular league to play in. they met several other free-lance Jay Vee teams from around the county. The schedule included a scrimmage with the Junior Varsities of Anaheim, Garden Grove, Fullerton, and Newport Harbor. The team didn't have a particularly good season in the won and lost column, but they were always out there fighting and showed definite signs of improvement late in the season. Coach Ken Moots did a fine job with the team and the fruits of his labor will show up well on next year's varsity squad. varsity basketball Second row: J. Lynch. M. Burleson, R. Smith, F. Reeves. First row: R. Berryman, G. Winter, M. Immell. 0. Hurlburt. The 1955-56 Saint basketball team had better records than last year in both league and non-league encounters. Several Saint victories were won by fight, spirit, and consistency. The Santa Ana Varsity, which was challenging the league leaders until the final games of the season, posted a 6-6 league mark: the best record of any Saint team since 1951. Elected by their teammates, George Winter was chosen captain, and Mike Immell was chosen the most valuable player. The Junior Varsity, who elected Don Dannenbring captain and Junior Gunter the most valuable player, had a 5-11 season. The Bees finished with a 6-13 mark; the Cees had the best season, 15-7, also winning the Capistrano Cee Tournament. junior varsity basketball Third rowi B. Verhoff, D. Cripps. F. Millard, G. VorsiJy Baseball Captain: Mike Immell varsity baseball As in the past years, Santa Ana had a good baseball team. Coach Ken Moats, who took over the reins as new head coach, proved to be a well liked and an able field general. Playing outstanding baseball throughout the season were Francis Millard, Robert Berryman, Art Melgoza, Wayne Husband, Jim Sinsley, and team captain Mike Immell. Santa Ana played a rough schedule before entering league play, but the Saints came through in good style. Sunset League teams were next, and again the Saints displayed hard play and high spirit. This year's team was well rounded despite the fact many players were playing on the Varsity for the first time. With many young promising players and a new head coach, Santa Ana fans can look forward to bigger and better seasons. 140 Captains: Ronnie Meyer Johnny Allen varsity track Starting the year off with the winning of a relay meet and the breaking of a record, the varsity track team kept up its traditionally fine place among other teams. Along with natural ability, hard work, and the fine coaching of Reece Greene, the Saints broke a twenty-six year record on the national honor roll. D. Hurlburt, C. Billstrom, R. Meyer, and J. Allen ran the four man 440 in 43.6 seconds, one-tenth less than the previous record. Going on and doing their very best through the year, and producing many fine records, the varsity track team of 1956 is a team of which the Santa Ana High School will always be proud. 142 f bee and cee track This year there were many good prospects that turned out for the Cee track team. In the first meet against Riverside, which the Cee team won, David Bressel, and Barry Bosworth both high jumped five feet eight inches. Milford Dahl ran the 660 in 132.3. Doing well in the Sunset League Championship Track Meet the Cee track team ended its season with many fine victories. Captains: Bob Patterson Goilberf Stroschein varsity swimming This year thirty-three boys came out to become part of the Saint swimming team. There seemed to be either strong veteran participants or members comparatively new to the swimming team. Bob Webster excelled in diving, and Guilbert Stroschein did very well in the fifty-yard free style with Bob Patterson breaking a record established in 1949 by doing 1:07 in the backstroke. Coach John Wilson was behind these boys and, along with their natural ability, they had a good year. 144 tennis Santa Ana's tennis squad was an exceptionally good one this year. With Neal Machander as new head coach and a strong returning squad, the Saintlanders were determined to win the league crown. Gil Ranney, team captain, headed a list of seven returning lettermen which included Bud McBride, Lee Metzger, Dan Manning, Gayle Brewer, Ed Mounce, and Al Feuerstein. In addition to these outstanding netters were Tom Morris, a junior, and Guy Archambault, a talented freshman. After sweeping through pre-league opposition without defeat, the Saint racquetmen were ready to begin Sunset League play. As Santa Ana began its battle for the league championship, the race appeared close; but the Saints' chances were rated excellent. Captain: Gilbert Ranney cross country golf 147 girls' athletic association Under the guidance of the Misses Alverda West, Zena Leek, Nancy Boyd and Mrs. Margaret Harper, the Girls' Athletic Association has had an unusually fine year. A great many sophomores and freshmen reported for i after-school sports and joined this athletic club for girls, while the junior and senior teams were extremely successful at their sport playdays with other schools. The two G.A.A. presidents were very capable and their parties both semesters were enjoyed by everyone. 148 Let: to right: R. Wright, P. Norton. S. Tuttle, A. Croddy, D. Gouemon. V. Gilh. C.
