With the Approach WINTER Ariel Art Staff With Mrs. Nell Fay as adviser, the Ariel Art Staff this year has done an excellent job in making the 1955 Ariel original and outstanding in appearance. Sylvia Ramirez, staff editor, began to plan the Ariel make-up during the latter part of last year, and is responsible for the ideas of seasonal divisions, running remarks, and the unusual arrangement of pictures. The sixteen member staff has worked hard on the cartoons, sketches, and designs which they have been assigned, and the result is well worth their effort. S6COND ROW Mu. Foy, S. Rom.ttx. S Tromel. P. W Sprague Ariel Business Staff ARIEL BUSINESS STAFF The Ariel Business Staff completed a very good yearbook under the reliable leadership of Grace Smith and adviser Mr. Edward Black. Taking charge of the Ariel pre-sale, finding sponsors, and scheduling all photographs just begin to name the tasks of the Business Staff. Finding capable publishers, book binders, and printers, go on to name their achievements. The needed sponsors ore found and then comes the printing, binding, and engraving of names on the covers. They then distribute the Ariels to the anxious Saints. The Business Staff can truly be proud of the 54-'55 Ariel. k 6F Ariel Literary Staff With the goal of making this year's Ariel better than ever, the Literary Staff began work last October. The work done by this staff is very exacting and must be completed m time to meet deadlines. They not only write stories, but they must also see that the stories and pictures correspond, that the picture identifications are correct, and all copy must be proof-read many times. The staff adviser, Mrs. Louise Sanborn, and the editor, Barbara Bates, along with the entire staff, deserve much credit for the success of this yearbook. Ariel Photography Staff The members of the Photograpy staff are chosen by means of application. Mr. Henderson is the adviser of the staff. Tom Gildersleeve, the editor, and the members of the staff begin immediately taking pictures. They cover the athletic, social and club events of the year. The assemblies are also part of their busy routine. After the pictures are taken, they process and choose the pictures which are to go into the Ariel. 23 Generator Staff This year's Generator staff successfully published twenty-two editions of the school paper under the leadership of Jo Anne Brophy, editor-in-chief, Ellie Honnoford, associate editor, and Agnes C. Sloon, the capable adviser. Many people do not realize the work which goes into a newspaper. News is gathered, written, the copy edited, deadlines met. The material is then sent to the printers where proof sheets are made and morked for errors. The journalism class then figures placement of the columns, sets the pictures and returns the paper to the printers for the final printing. The competent staff took on the varied responsibilities and conscientiously produced the Generator. 24 SCCOND ROW. A. Barton, M. Newton. 8 Boder. K. Holt. 0. tykke. M Bonitoti. THIRD ROWi K. After dropping their first two starts at Fullerton 19-7, and Montebello 14-7, the J.V.- hit stride in defeating Anaheim 32-13. The following week, Anaheim turned the fables, 19-0. Basketball The 1954-55 Saint basketball team had as highly competitive a season this year as is imaginable. Even with the keen desire to capture the league pennant and the hard playing shown by the Saints, their opposition proved to be too strong. At the beginning of the Sunset League competition, Santa Ana had a record of seven wins and six losses and showed signs of giving the other league contenders a real bottle. Unfortunately, the squad couldn't seem to muster up enough points to keep up with its high scoring rivals and ended the season with a total of eight wins and fifteen losses. This year's Junior Varsity, which will be the future varsity, had a record of nine wins and three losses and will provide many a thrill next season. CAPTAIN DICK FOOTE 66 FIRST ROW. B Walton. M. A goodly number of lettermen from the 1954 club, which finished fifth in Sunset League competition, returned to action for the '55 season. The horsehiders had a good, tight defense, but lacked the hitting prowess necessary to become a constant winner. Charles Berryman and Gil Rodriguez headed the mound staff and pitched excellent ball all season. Third baseman Dan Profant was team captain. Coach Herb Solomon used the returning Jay Vee lettermen as a nucleus and built a solid team around them by filling the gaps with new baseball recruits, most of whom were sophomores. The team got away to a slow start against strong non-league opposition but showed steady improvement throughout the pre-league games and then came along fast in league play to give a good account of themselves. The Saint net team approached this tennis season determined to retain the Sunset League Championship which they have now held for two consecutive years. The team hoped to match last year s undefeated league season, and fought hard towards the realization of this accomplishment. Coach Don Liebhart lost most of his top flight 1953-54 team, including such stars as Richard Lamb, Norman Williams, David Hopkins, and cocaptains Ed West and Paul Bader. Those lettermen who returned to form the nucleus of this year s excellent squad were Gil Ronney, Bud McBride. Dennis Alevison, and captain Bill Barber. Coach Liebhart felt at the beginning of the season that his team lacked the depth that last year's squad possessed, but they made up for this fault with determination and the will to win. When our sophomores were new and a little confused, they walked through the hallowed halls of Samtland wearing bewildered expressions on their faces. However, they soon became used to the routines of school life here and began noticing the things around them.
