The student's relationship to this scale and the efforts of the faculty and administrative officers are two prime factors in the building of well-rounded individuals. Valuable experience in student government builds a strong foundation for participation in greater offices in our national government. It is through these activities in high school years that our leaders of tomorrow are trained. i itf n $ o $ o __ t? £ S n if + X tml ¥ ft 5 v? First on the list was the Sophomore Tea, which made the sophomores and all newcomers to Santa Ana High School feel truly welcome. Following this event was an even more successful Football Dance, feting not only our school, but Newport Harbor High School as well. At Christmas, the Cabinet sought to convey the season's greetings by trimming a large tree in the foyer and distributing corsages and boutonnieres to all the faculty members. As a second semester project, vocational guidance conferences were conducted for all the feminine members of the student body. A fitting conclusion to a very successful year, the Coed afforded the girls the chance to treat their best beaus to this semi-formal dance. All these varied activities could never have been brought about without the understanding and cooperation of the Cabinet advisers, Mrs. Mabel O'Buch and Mrs. Virginia Fielding. First row: D. Shultz. These include The Generator, a periodical newspaper, our yearbook, the Ariel, and Leaves in the Wind, a magazine published by the Creative Writing class. School publications keep an accurate measurement of the growth and records of the school, as well as give the students experience in writing and journalism. For the many long hours and hard work put into these publications, a great deal of satisfaction and pride in the result is the reward—a well-earned one. PUBLICATIONS 17 First row: I. Go wen. M. Jo Ann has had a very cooperative staff of thirteen talented students, who have worked hard and long on their committees. There are five groups. The Administration committee is headed by chairman Ellen Clarke; Organization and Publication committee is led by Isabel Gowen; Don Hartman is chairman of Boys' Athletics,- Donna Armstrong heads the Girls' Athletics committee; and the Classes committee is headed by chairman Jo Ann Glines. Many weeks were spent selecting an original theme, deciding upon the proper illustrations, and arranging the pages. Much credit should be given this group for the efficient and creative effort put forth in handling the yearbook. 18 Firjf row: B. lewis, R. Hall, A. Koo, D. WoolUy, Miss Watson. Second row: S. Anna Koo and Sandy Walker, literary editors this year, and the rest of the staff have the large undertaking of reading all copy and proofs for the yearbook and of identifying pictures of the student body for the Ariel. A difficult job also done by the staff is the paste-up, which is complicated and requires time and patience on the part of each and every staff member. Each year an annual banquet is given for all Ariel staff members. The literary staff was in charge of this year's banquet, making all the arrangements for the successful evening. 19 First row: B. Smith, Mr. Black. cAriel J$u ine££ St a BUSINESS EDITOR Harriett Higgins Under the capable editorship of Harriett Higgins, the Ariel Business Staff has worked long and hard to make another successful yearbook. With Mr. Edward Black, adviser, the staff has accomplished many assignments such as acquiring patrons for the Ariel, running the Ariel pre-sale, and scheduling the photography for the senior pictures, organizations, and various other extra-curricular activities. They also have secured good publishers, book binders, and printers for the cause. Finally, they have taken charge of the distributing of the finished product, the 1952 Ariel. Each student on the Business Staff should be given much credit for her cooperation and work on this year's interesting and outstanding yearbook. 20 First row: M. J. Barnett, Mr . Fay. Second row: J. Each year, this staff has the task of photographing the students participating in the diverse school activities such as the Saint Show, Color Day, various initiations into clubs, assemblies, plays, afterschool sports, competitive sports, and other school functions. The students who have worked on this staff have caught glimpses of many happy school memories with their camera and have gained valuable experience while working on the Ariel. The Photography Staff is to be praised for a job well done in helping to make this yearbook a success 21 First row: S. Garfrell, J. Cronhardt, J. Paxton, A. Gregg, M. Penny. Qenerator Staff Under the capable supervision of Mrs. Marjorie Browne, the editors and staff of the Generator, the school newspaper, write 30 to a very successful year of reporting. The entire staff under the editors-in-chief, Diane Elfstrom the first semester and Gloria Davis the second semester, have given the students of Santa Ana Senior High School a most comprehensive coverage of all athletic, social, scholastic, and intra-mural activities. All the interesting and well reported events are published in the Generator which is distributed at intervals at no cost to the students. This publication serves to coordinate all the groups and factions of the school into a well-organized student body. Each of the students owes a vote of thanks to the hard-working staff and its adviser for their untiring effort, patience, and cooperation, for the school paper is truly the library of high school life. 22 First row: G. Many long and hard hours go into this publication, but the result is well-worth the hard work. This year many students in the Creative Writing class won honorable mentions and awards in various contests. Out of the seventeen students enroiled in the class, eight took honors in the National High School Poetry Anthology, and seven, in the Essay Anthology. Other contests entered by the Literary Sammies and Sallies included the Browning Poetry Contest, the Alliance of Fine Arts contest, and the American Legion Auxiliary Essay contest. Serving as editor this year was Kay Stillwell, and Diane Elfstrom acted as business manager. Kay Stillwell, Editor Diane Elfstrom, Business Manager 23 Organizations at Santa Ana Senior High School are the storehouses of school spirit, leadership, and cooperation. With every grain of sand which passes through the hour glass, at least one organization is busily working on one project or another. Here, our leaders of tomorrow are being trained to face major problems in their later life. Recognition of students in such fields as art, drama, and music has again, this year, brought prestige to our school. Minutes, hours, days, and months have elapsed with these organizations producing top notch artists, actors, and performers. High school days are the best time of our lives, and judging from the enthusiasm aroused in our organizations, they are the years we will most treasure when we later look back upon them. Good sportsmanship is timeless and not limited to the time clock of the game. During the actual minutes allowed for the game, we try our hardest to win the victory, but win or lose, we take it in our stride. Each victory adds to our pride in our high school, and each defeat only makes us more determined to win the following year. We at Santa Ana High School are proud of our teams. Sticking behind them, we all gain a sense of fair-play which will last long after our school days are over. ATHLETICS 51 REECE GREENE BILL COLE CoacheA Santa Ana High School is justly proud of its fine coaching staff. Working hard and guiding the Saint teams to high standards of good sportsmanship, the staff deserves to be congratulated. Ralph Cole, once a Santa Ana Saint himself, now is in his thirteenth successful year as Varsity football coach. Big Bill also coaches Bee basketball. Being head of the boy's physical education department keeps coach Cole very busy throughout the year. Leading the Varsity basketball five this year was Lester McKnight, better known as Bus. Coach McKnight also assisted Bill Cole in Varsity football by acting as line coach. Returning for his twenty-second year is Reece Greene. As in previous years Pinky Greene built up an excellent track team. His cross country men also came through with flying colors. Coaching Cee and Dee basketball and Cee football was one of Santa Ana's busiest coaches. Herb Covington. This was Mr. Covington's fourth year as a coach at S.A.H.S. 52 HERB COVINGTON bus Mcknight John Wilson completed his sixth year as swimming coach with a truly fine team. His Bee football team also was very successful. Rounding out the year with baseball. Coach Rollo Beck had a team any coach would be proud of. He also instructs Junior Varsity football and Junior Varsity basketball. In his first year as a Saint coach Al Powell turned out a truly fine Varsity tennis team. He also acted as a line coach for Bee football. Another fine addition to the Saint coaching staff is Norman Schaum who acted as coach for the Junior Varsity baseball team. Not to be forgotten is Bill Foote, who acts as general physical education instructor and heads the first aid courses given to the boys. This year Coach Foote trained the golf team. 53 Al POWEll football CAPTAIN Frank Torres At the beginning of the 1951 Sunset League football season nobody would have given two cents for Sammy Saint's chances. At the finish the team stood in third place with only two league losses. The comeback, spearheaded by Bob Switzer and Dick Bennett with five touchdowns each, was termed amazing by local pundits. The Santa Ana eleven started the season with a fizzle in a 6-0 do-nothing game with Excelsior, and despite gradual improvement, no one could see much hope in their remaining pre-league record of defeats at the hands of Long Beach Wilson, Chaffey, and Montebello, 20-13, 28-6, and 36-0 respectively. Despite the irony of the situation, Saint backers were not consoled when their team was trounced 26-0 in the league-opener by the hard-fighting champions-to-be, Anaheim's Colonists, led by ex-Saints Eli and Aaron Peralta. Then came the big surprise as Santa Ana, discovering a passer in Bob Switzer, beat Orange 20-13. Rallying magnificently from behind the wrong end of a 13-0 score, speedy Dick Bennett led the Saints to a 28-20 victory over Newport Beach in easily the season's most thrilling free-for-all. A 26-19 win against Huntington Beach put Santa Ana in a tie for second place until the final fall, a humiliating 73-19 rout at the hands of Fullerton. 54 DICK AARVIO Guard DICK BENNETT Halfback Saint of tha Waok JOHN BERGEN Guard Saint of tha Waok DARRELL COONEY DICK CRAWFORD Guard Cantor Saint of tha Waak MONTE DAVIS End Saint of fba Waak CLAUDE FITTS Guard LLOYD FOSTER Quartarback RIO DE LA RIVA BILL DOBBS LARRY DUNIVEFfT DARRELL FISHBURN Halfback Tackla End Guard IVAN FRANCE LOUIS OOMEZ JACK HAllICK LEON KARR DAVID KINO RICHARD KUYKENDALL Guard Halfback Halfback Quartarback Cantor Halfback Saint of tha Waak BAXTER LINAM Guard RHIl MARTINEZ Quartarback BILL MILLER Tackla KENNY NELSON End BOB NOE HENRY OIDENBROOK Tackla Tackla 55 ART ONTIVEROS TackU GENE PARR Fullback JARRETT TERRELL End FRANK TORRES TackU Saint oF tha Weak KEITH POCOCK End WARD RENSHAW End Saint of tha Waak ANTHONY SMITH Fullback BOB SWITZER Ouartarback Saint oF tha Waak HUMBERTO VALDIVIA End Saint oF tha Waak BILL WHEELAN HalFback 56 Fir t row: D. Despite the fact that the team had only one returning letterman. Coach John Wilson, with the assistance of Coach Allen Powell, shaped and molded the green material into a worthy football squad. The inexperienced Bees dropped the first four practice games to Excelsior 13-7, Long Bach Wilson 45-13, Montebello 38-6, and Chaffey 13-12. Improving constantly, the Little Saints were ready for Anaheim in the league opener, winning 14-13. The next week the Bees took a defeat from Orange 12-7. After sinking the Little Tars, the Bees met a strong Huntington Beach team and lost 25-0. Ending their season in a blaze of glory, the Little Saints beat their traditional rival Fullerton, 13-12. 57 First row: T. Msrumofo, J. Broth r on, G. Aldsrlon, S. Juarez, J. Whitaker, J. Shick, G. Cee football After three pre-league scrimmages it looked as though Coach Herb Covington's Cees had a triumphant season before them, boasting one of the strongest Cee football teams ever to don the name Saintlets. However, when league play rolled around, the squad was so reduced by ineligibility that the little Saints finished out of the money, winning 3 and losing 2. In three early season skirmishes with Garden Grove, Tustin, and Laguna Beach, the Cees came out on top, scoring 20 times to their opponents' 1. In the league opener, the Saintlets were crushed 27-7 by a powerful Anaheim team which later went on to win the league. The squad snapped back, pasting Orange, 34-0; Newport Harbor, 21-0; and Huntington Beach, 20-6 in a burst of victory. The Fullerton game, which climaxed the league season play for the Cees, ended Fullerton 27-Santa Ana 0. CAPTAIN Billy Marumoto 58 Fir t row: M. Will, J. Garthe, C. Neal, F. Reed, F. Calvillo, V. Fullerton proved their nemesis in giving out both their only loss, 13-0, and their only tie, 2-2. Starting the season with a 12-6 victory over Long Beach Wilson, the team was slowed up by the ill-fated Fullerton duo, but recovered handily to plow under Anaheim's Jay Vees to the tune of 26-7. Playing consistently, they ran up the same score in their next game, this time against Orange. Having taken Newport Harbor 18-0, the Jay Vees ended their season triumphantly, running up 12-2 in their clash with Huntington Beach. Indicating the promise uncovered this season. Coach Beck pointed out that the majority of this year's Varsity was last year's Jay Vee team. 59 60 19 First row: B. Switxer. T. Col . L Fost r, J. Thom . Second row: Mgr. 0. Rohe. F. Morris. B. No . Pre-league practice games included losses to Long Beach Wilson, Colton, and Covina, with a victory over Garden Grove, 47-13. Having started the Sunset League inauspiciously with a 51-39 defeat at the hands of Anaheim, the Santa Anans chalked up another loss in an upset game with Orange. The Saint five continued to lose, ending the first round with no wins. It was not until the last games of the second round that Santa Ana began to show real strength. First we gave the heavily favored league champions, Huntington Beach, the fight of the season. Finally, we wound up with a 54-45 win over Fullerton, possibly one of the strongest teams in the league. 62 First row: J. Hombs, M. Sullivan, R. Brad-lay, T. Paters, G. LaPiar. Second row: F. Coach John Wilson built up a well-balanced swimming team with good men in each event. Tom Corbin, an outstanding breast-stroker for the past three years, had good competition within the team this season. He and Pete Norton continually finished neck and neck. Also piling up points in this event were Mel Henderson and Ray Ceja. Prominent among the sprint men were Dick Hayes, Bill Morrison, Dick Elliott, and Dick Gilmore. Dick Grover and Jerry Boling were among those bringing honors to the team in the 200. In the diving event Stan Bond, who placed in the CIF finals last year, was aided by Ed Pierson and Russ Berhens, both new this year and looking good. Outstanding among the backstrokers were Jerry May, Stan Bond and Tom Harrison. 66 Fir t row: J. Cord« , R. Heinlein, R. Carr, J. Coffman, T. Pate. Second row: Coach Wilton, E. Pierton, R. Gilmore, J. J3a£eball Sparked by the able guidance of their coach, Rollo Beck, Santa Ana High's Saint baseball team completed another great season this year. In 1951 the team had come out completely victorious, winning the Pomona tournament and the Sunset League with no losses, as well as having pitcher Bert Haysom, shortstop Rex Babcock, and first baseman Harvey Bryan elected to the All-Sunset League team. So 1952 found the Saints competing not only against the other teams, but with their own record of former victories. Six returning lettermen, including captain Phil Martinez, provided a solid core which was well complemented by a large group of sophomores, juniors, and seniors, many of whom had played with last year's Bee and Cee teams. Facing unusually tough opposition, especially in the league, Santa Ana horsehiders turned in outstanding records in both the Pomona tournament and the Sunset League. The junior varsity squad is maintained for the purpose of giving those boys who ordinarily would not be able to play in varsity competition, a chance to receive some invaluable baseball experience under actual game conditions. This training has proved very worthwhile in later varsity play. Although these junior Batmen” have no actual league, their season is readily filled with games against the junior varsity classes of the schools that the varsity faces. The boys on this team receive very little publicity although they are always in there fighting. They did a fine job this season and every Santa Ana High School student can be proud of them. 69 Fir row: J. McC© h, 0. Beer, H. Ay I , S. Boettcher. B. Born , R. Bennett, E. Winter, R. Truex. G. Led by returning lettermen Hector Ayala, Dick Bennett, Bob Burns, Richard Kuykendall, Ray Lancaster, Jack McCosh, Bill Smith, and George Spielman, Santa Ana's varsity track team, defending Sunset League champions, successfully completed another season of first class competition. Coach Reece Pinky Greene did a fine job, molding and shaping an extra large turnout into a prize-winning track team in time for the Brea Relays, early in the season. Going from there into the Chaffee and the Southern California invitational track meets, the Saints also made good showings. Co-Captains Dick Bennett and Bob Burns set a stiff pace in the hurdles and the sprints respectively, backed by a strong squad in all A, B, and C divisions. With many eager young sophomores, Santa Ana's track prospects look good for future years also. CAPTAIN John Schultz TJennU Small, but powerful, this year's tennis team might be refered to as a mighty mouse. Only fourteen boys signed up, but they more than made up for lack of numbers in speed, stamina and skill. Tennis has been one of Santa Ana High's habitually strong sports, and this year was no exception. Under the direction of Coach Al Powell, who took over this year from Walter Egger, the team showed up well in pre-league games with Chaffey, Excelsior and Long Beach Poly. Captain John Schultz and returning lettermen Bill Reed, Alfred Wilson, Dick Hitt, and Ronnie Fisher spurred the team on to show their new coach what they could do against powerful foes like Anaheim and Fullerton. Additional honors came to the team when John Schultz and Bill Reed were sent to the Ojai Tournament. 72 First row: D. Coon«y, J. B«rg«n, F. Torres, D. Grover, Second row: R. Ceja, I. Kerr, 8. All members are qualified to wear a regulation Lettermen's sweater. At the beginning of the second semester adviser Rollo Beck brought about a complete re-organization of the group. Plans were laid for many activities for 1952-53, including a Lettermen's Club dance. Arrangements were also made for the organization to sponsor the annual sale of rooters' caps in the future. Meetings featuring sports movies and outstanding sports figures were held at various times during the year. The officers included Dick Bennett, president; David Bear, secretary; and Dick Aarvig, treasurer. Under the advisership of Bus McNight during the first semester and Coach Beck during the second, the club completed the year with a feeling of accomplishment. 73 74 QirU7 cAthleticA Fir t row: G. Our adaptability to the ways of these groups is a measure of our individual character. These classes work in mathematics, science, art, industrial education, and numerous other fields as the initial stepping stones to further progress into the world. Text books, pencils, and rulers are familiar tools for high school students, just as the blueprints, hammer, and nails are the tools for building a home. In both cases we strive for a firm foundation, making careful measurements all the way. 84 CLASSES 85 86 President, Stan Throneberry Sophomore£ Vice President, Deanna Kauffman The Sophomores of 1951-52 as a class have done a great deal. Probably most important, they have begun to lose their identity as a group of newcomers and have become a class of students in Santa Ana High, with a real part in its activities —sports, plays, musical organizations, clubs, and classes. Now the Sophomore class can look forward to two wonderful years as upper classmen. By all means! They are next to the top class in High School; they are excellent class and school boosters; they rank high in activities. Under the capable leadership of their adviser, Mr. William T. Elliott, the officers with the help of the class members have succeeded in accomplishing many great objectives that have been set before them, such as the Junior-Senior Prom and the exciting responsibility of selecting class rings. These are just two of the most important things in a Junior's life, but there are others, such as participating in the variousmusicaldepartments. This column is symbolic not only of our senior year, but of all our years at Santa Ana Senior High School. We shall not discard this book rapidly, forgetting all the memories stored in it, but will remember often the friends and good times it represents. We shall recall with mixed emotions our days as bewildered sophomores, the transition to complacent juniors, and finally emerging as far wiser seniors. With the capable assistance of our class adviser, Mr. Clyde Cook, the Senior Class of 1952 can close the book on a record of three happy and successful years.
