ARIEL VOLUME XLVI Santa Ana Senior High School, Santa Ana, Cahfornia In the year 1849 the cry of gold was heard all over the country. Thousands of fortune hunters came to California looking for the precious metal. They worked with inexhaustible energy. Shining riches beyond all previous dreams were extracted. No other year is quite equal to 49 , a year which has become a symbol to which every other gold rush, before or since, inevitably is compared. The men and the fever of the gold rush are long forgotten by many, but in California their work lives through the years. The California of 1949 is observing its Centennial this year, and, fittingly, the Ariel of 1949 is dedicated to the Centennial, and to the men who, in their search for gold, came west to start the progress which made the California of 1949 the grand place it is today. . STUDENT GOVERNMENT WINTER SPRING Donn Moomaw PRESIDENTS The two powers behind the successful year of 1949 were Student Body Presidents Don Hanson and Donn Moomaw. Under their capable leadership and the guidance of advisor John Johnson, the past year has shown many outstanding features in school morale and student government. During the fall term President Don hHanson presided over the Board of Control which sponsored the best Color Day known in school history with almost every student participating in the event. Also under his direction, the Board presented the annual Football and Cross Country Track banquet, excellent assemblies, and campaigns for student betterment. The attendance at the noon film series, tne proceeds of which were for the Student Welfare Fund, surpassed all records of previous years. With such a high standard to live up to, Donn Moomaw took up the office of Student Body President at the beginning of the spring semester. Under Donn, the Board planned an outstanding Student Body Picnic, which had almost 100 per cent student participation. Also given were the Stu- dent Officers ' party. Basketball banquet. Spring sports banquet, and the student body officers in- stallation which brought to a close his successful term. 12 BOARD OF CONTROL WINTER Vice-President, Bill Lockett Secretary, Barbara Brown SPRING Vice-President, Norma Herzig Secretary, Carol Kern ' . The League ' s program included assem- blies and a talent show produced entirely by the feminine half of the student body; a dance to close the football season after the game with victorious Fullerton; and a vocational conference in order to help the girls with job problems. The mammoth Christmas tree which adorned the foyer for the week preceding Christmas va- cation was bought and decorated by the League and after being enjoyed by the students and faculty alike, was donated to the County hlospital for the enjoyment of the patients. Of course the annual turn-about dance, the Co-ed, couldn ' t be omitted from the year ' s activities. Due credit must be given to the excellent guidance given to the organization by Miss Helen Kirkland, Mrs. Mabel O ' Buch, and Mrs. Virginia Fielding, the capable advisors. This year the Honor Society and the hlonor Roll have had an increase in membership, and this seems to indicate, happily, that the students of Santa Ana High School are putting more accent on studies. An important item in Honor Society business this year was a gener- ous donation to the Seymore Award, which is given each year to one boy and one girl in the California Scholarship Federation. The second annual farewell and welcoming party during the first part of the second semester was quite successful, and the members hope to have another next year. The ditch day party at Corona Del Mar was a success in spite of chilly weather. Several students were delegated to attend the annual California Scholarship Federation conference, where they they participated in forums and discussions. Life members of the C. S. F., who are awarded their pins at Commencement, really earn this honor, for to be eligible they must be members of the Honor Society four of their six semesters at high school. This means receiving at least three A ' s and a B each semester. First semester officers of the organization were: Nayan McNeill, president; Barbara Kennedy, vice-president; Norma Herzig, secretary; and Betsy Warren, treasurer. Spring officers were: Louise Guinn, presi- dent; Ronald Dozier, vice-president; Lois Ann Jones, secretary; and Jo Ann Smith, treasurer. Mrs. Asenath Bennett and Mrs. Mary Tozier are the very helpful and capable advisers. 68 HONOR ROLL KirsI IMW; C. S.Jiiilx. il, .M I ' lu. t. i , I ' . Flalu-rty, 1.. A iii;l,iii ,i . A. The co-editors, Joyce Brady and Frank Tremel, started plan- ning the layout of the book before school was out last year and met with other members to carry out their plans. Much credit should be given to this highly important staff of the Ariel and to all the students who served on it for their talent which helped to make the 1949 Ariel a success. We must also give credit for their superb cooperation and for their never dying interest in their work, making this year ' s annual the outstand- ing book that it is. First row: Mrs. Vaye, M. Teter. Outside, the sand and dust whip around the campus and creep into a small window of a very small room on the second floor of the administration building and discover that, In truth, the building is not deserted. Behind one door the clickety-clack of typewriters may be heard. Someone is beating out copy. Someone else Is typing names for pictures. Another someone is reading off proof. The 1949 Ariel is in the making. The literary staff, co-operating with the other Ariel staffs, has tried to give you a representative picture of what goes on at Santa Ana hHigh, things that you would have forgotten had it not been for the hard work, forethought, and persistence on the part of the literary editor, Kenneth Reynolds, and those working with him. The staff, its adviser, and its manager pooled their abilities in performing many tasks. A few of them are the running of the annual pre-sales at the beginning of the year, the problem of seeing to all the bookkeeping, securing patrons to sponsor the book, the final sales toward the end of the year, and at last the distribution of the Ariel. This staff chooses the pictures to be used in the Ariel and supervises their mounting for the preparation of cuts, an exacting and tedious job requiring patience and skill. Student photographers take pictures at all the school social functions, besides getting many breath-taking shots at athletic events. The photography staff also sponsors the annual contest of snapshots, so that there will be scenes from parties, vacations, and campus activities in the Ariel. Ever on the alert, keenly observant, skillfully and painstakingly the Generator editors and their staff have labored unsparingly in their responsible task of supplying interesting news and information to ail individuals and groups. With Phyllis Ehrler, editor-in-chief for the first semester, and Olga Kosar and John hHarvey, co-editors for the second, the Generator covers all the school news of both faculty and students, including sports events, club doings, parties, dances, and personal items. It takes an enormous amount of hard work and painstaking attention to detail to get out a paper like the Generator and our sincere thanks go out to its efficient staff and also to Mr. Bruce Matchett and Mr. Willard E. When the first rosy flush was gone from the return to school-day grind, and frosts were playing havoc with summer ' s green foliage, great literary figures of tomorrow were scurrying hopefully (like sguirrels in search of a choice nut) through the Rhyming Dictionary for just the right word, or rushing like the wind for the cabinet where the Thesaurus is kept. Yes, the Creative Writing Class v as hard at work from the very start of school, intent on producing a literary masterpiece in this year ' s Leaves In The Wind. It was not all work of course, for there was always time for laugh- ter, and this too was reflected in the final product. Realizing that poets are traditionally romanticists and yet should be practical, the Creative Writing Class decided to combine both In the sale of mistletoe. The profits went toward publication costs of Leaves In The Wind. Under the friendly guidance of Miss Mildred Watson, adviser, the entire class was divided into Editorial Boards, to sort the articles and get the very cream of the crop. The final selections were made by the class. There was much scurrying about to rewrite, type and re-type, and meet the final deadline. Checking to make sure everything was coming along all right and working like a mad fiend was Editor Marilyn Webb. When all was finished on the writing end. Business Manager Virginia Andrews took over the publicity and the actual sale. 98 ' ' ' - ' ' ;. c ' ' ATHLETICS KuLL-ling: R. UreeiK, U. i, i,u. .SlaiicUiis: B. JKKaight, B. Cult, U. Wuiluu.-t. J. Vi COACHES Santa Ana High is justly proud of its fine coaching staff. Working hard and guiding all Saint teams to high standards, the staff deserves to be congratulated. Rounding out this year ' s season of football, varsity coach Big Bill Cole aided the team to another victorious season, losing only to the Fullerton Indians in the last 15 seconds of the game. Cole also coached the B basketeers this year. Coach Bus McKnight, in his third year as varsity basketball coach, led his cagers in a series of very successful games this season. McKnight also assisted Bill Cole as varsity line coach. One of the most exciting of the spring sports is tennis. Don War- hurst, coaching tennis as well as B football, arranged for meets with other schools and competition among players here on the Saint team. Swimming, the all-important spring sport, was coached by John Wilson in his third year as swimming instructor. In interschool com- petition, the team built up strong opposition to other schools. Reece - . Greene came through with a fine track team again this year, h e also had a very successful cross country team. As usual. Bill Foote gave us a great baseball team to finish up a year of sports that Santa Ana High can be well proud of. 100 - Ji Donn Moomaw Howard Wallevand Darrell Turner Herschel Musick David Cole SAINTS OF THE WEEK Milt Wikert Danny Pral 101 CAPTAINS Donn Moomaw Darrell Turner FOOTBALL Going into the ' 48 season with thoughts of revenge and hopes of regaining the Sunset League crown, the Santa Ana High School varsity eleven again was foiled by the hands of Lady Luck. With less than one minute to go in the game, and the game seemingly within their grasp, the Saints were leading the visiting Fullerton tribe 7-6. When the final gun had sounded however, the championship had slipped away and the Indians were celebrating a 13-7 triumph. Opening the season against the Long Beach Poly ' Jackrabbits, ' the Saints were hard pressed in gaining a scoreless tie. hHosting the combined forces of Laguna Beach and Garden Grove, the team racked up a 39-0 score before traveling to Riverside for a 1 3-8 conquest. hHopes were high for the Saints as they downed Anaheim 27-6, Huntington Beach 21-0 and Orange 20-0. But then came the 7-13 Fullerton tragedy. With hopes of the championship growing dim, the Saints toppled Harbor 13-0, El Monte 21-13, and played perhaps their best game of the season in scuttling the Downey Vikings 39-6. As last year, Santa Ana wound up in a tie for the championship with Fullerton. The Indians were given the title however, due to the Sunset League rule stating that the winner of the game played between the two teams tied is the champion. 102 First row: H. Musick, E. However, as it was, the ' Saintlets ' ably handled by Coaches Don Warhurst and John Wilson finished out of the money after an up and down season. At season ' s close, the ' Bees ' were sporting a .500 league average. The ' Little Saints ' opened the league sea- son on a bright note, defeating Anaheim 6-0. The Hunting- ton Beach Oilers proved to be too slick, downing the Saints 2 I -6. After taking the measure of Orange 21-13, the ' Bees ' were smothered under Fullerton ' s 27-0 barrage. After sink- ing the Harbor Sailors 36-6, the Saints traveled to Downey to lose a heartbreaker 7-8. Under the able coaching of Bill Foote these stalwart Saints of gridiron spend most of their time running off plays of opposing teams against the Varsity and Bee teams, v hile at the same time they are build- ing L ' p the Varsity attack. hHowever, a few hours of triumph were earned by these fighting Saints in scheduled games with FHuntington Beach and Fullerton. Chuck Winkler, who Is the second highest scorer with I I I points, and Donn Moomaw, who scored 101 points, are deserving of a big hand for their excellent showing. Breath-taking battles not only were furnished in the annual Pomona baseball tour- nament and the rugged Sunset League championship race but in pre-season games as well. Three lettermen, Pat Davis, this year ' s captain, Rex Wilmot, leader of the league in hitting for last year, and Milton Wikert, returned with a good number of Junior Varsity men to form the nucleus for a strong team with a never-ending will to win. Since the infield and pitching staff went out with last year ' s senior class, many new faces were seen on this year ' s squad, including three very promising sopho- mores, Rex Babcock, Bob Baker, and Bert Haysom. For the first time the Junior Varsity has a regular league, very similar to that of the Varsity. In competi- tion the Junior Varsity plays the same schools that are played by the Varsity in the Sunset League. I 12 CAPTAIN Pat Davis TRACK .V, 1.. ' I ' hi K. N ' . .lili- !• ' . Orange fell under the feet of the mighty Saint cinderbeaters, but Santa Ana ' s greatest rival, Ful- lerton, proved to be their downfall by winning the Santa Ana-Fullerton dual meet, 56-48. With a squad of almost all varsity lettermen, the team was able to make a good name for itself in the league. Norman Jiies proved to be in top place in the high jump, while Donn Moomaw made an unexpected good showing running the hurdles. Charles Baker won many points for the squad in the Fullerton meet, coming in second in the pole-vault. Leonard Thornton added to the prestige of the team in running the mile and winning more points for Santa Ana. Our Saints won a preliminary meet at Pomona, coming In first In practically all events, proving further the Saint fighting spirit. In Cross Country and Bee and Cee Track Santa Ana also showed that it has an excellent team. They won many points and meets and chalked up victory after victory. 113 BEE AND CEE TRACK First row: R. CAPTAINS Bill Lockett Stan Miller The Santa Ana Senior High School tennis team, coached by Don Warhurst, started out on another successful year with a record break- ing turnout. Of the 28 boys that showed up to support the school all but four were either sophomores or juniors, which shows that these younger Sammies are very much interested in supporting school sports. Being co-captained by Stan Miller and Bill Lockett, these fighting Saints gave their op- ponents In most cases more than they could handle, for they worked their way to fifth place In the novice tournament, in which 22 different schoo ' s competed. El Monte coming out on top. This year ' s No. I doubles have been ro- tated v ith such combinations as Tim Peralta and Ted Palmer, Stan Miller and Peralta, or Charles Rockwell and Palmer. Stan Miller is also No. i singles. During the three years of high school, almost every girl who is inclined toward athletics strives for one goal: to receive the 1000 point award from the Girls ' Athletic Association. To be eligible for the G.A.A., a girl must take an active part in team sports. An athletic letter is given to those girls who receive the required number of points. In the spring the organization had its annual party at which all awards were presented. During the football season the girls did their part to further school spirit by selling red and white yarn dolls. Playdays are held after every season to give the players an opportunity to show their skill against other schools and get acquainted with some of the outside teams.
