The Thrill of Victory! ri 79 7 Emma Sansom Vs. Albertville — 28-8 The Rebels opened the 1984 football season on the road with a 28-8 victory over the Aggies of Albertville. A rushing attack led by Gene Jelks and Tim Mer- riweather helped to compile the 333 yards on the ground for the Rebels, while the defense held the Aggies to 22 yards on the ground. A key interception by Kenny Malone halted Albertville’s first scoring drive and seemed to turn the momentum to the Rebels. This momentum was to continue over the next four months for the fighting Rebels. Emma Sansom Vs. Litchfield 34-6 The Emma Sansom Rebels continued their winning ways as their season opener in Murphee Stadium was a 34-6 victory over the Litchfield Eagles. The Rebels scored on their first possession thanks to a combined running attack by Gene Jelks and Tim Merriweather. These two ball carriers, along with Kenton Wright who had touchdowns, led the Rebel’s offense. Brian Dunn hit for four PAT’s on the night. The defense led by Larry Rose, Jeff Burgess, Billy Ray Cox, Anthony Smith, and Scott Gilbert. Scott had two first half fumble recoveries that later led to scores for the Rebels and helped defeat the cross-town rival Eagles. Emma Sansom Vs. Colbert County— 18-15 The Rebels took their perfect record on the road again to meet the Colbert County Indians, who had not forgotten the last time the Rebels had to come to town. Sansom scored first on a 66 yard run by Gene Jelks and Brian Dunn’s PAT was good to make it 7-0. The Indians came right back to make it 8-7 on a touchdown and two-point conversion. In the third quarter Reico Malone scored for the Rebels on a 27 yard touchdown pass and Jelks ran the two-point conver- sion, giving Sansom a 15-8 lead. Colbert County came back again to make it 15- 15 on a touchdown and PAT. With the clock ticking down to only seconds left in the game the Rebels took advantage of a seldom used rule. They fair caught the ball on the Indians’ 40, a penalty moved the ball to the 35 and then elected to free kick the ball. Brian Dunn hit a perfect 45 yard field goal to give the Rebels an 18-15 dramatic victory over the Indians. Emma Sansom Vs. Anniston — 41-6 The Rebels blasted the Anniston Bulldogs with a 370 yard offense and strong defensive effort. The offense was led by Gene Jelks, Paul Hawk, Van Hoyt, Ken- ton Wright and Reico Malone as they combined to produce an air ground attack that proved too much for the Bulldogs. Quick reactions by Billy Ray Cox and Jeff Corbin led to fumble recoveries, Corbin’s coming in the endzone for a score, as the mighty Rebels rolled off their fourth straight victory. Emma Sansom Vs. Etowah — 27-0 The Rebels paid the price for their fifth victory as Gene Jelks was lost early in the game with an injured ankle. While the rushing attack was once again led by Jelks, Tim Merriweather, Kenton Wright, and Van Hoyt, the defense pulled together in putting together their first shut out of the year in a 27-0 victory for the Rebels. 82 Emma Sansom Vs. Fultondale 41-0 The awesome Rebel Defense put together back-to-back shut outs as they defeated Fultondale 41-0 on the road. The victory improved the Rebels record to 6-0 and are ranked Second in the Alabama Sports Writers Cias 5A poll. Van Hoyt, Tim Merriweather, Kenton Wright, Andy Watts, and Lenardo Williams all had touchdowns, with Hoyt having two. Only one starter played at all in the second half as the Rebels coasted to an easy victory. Emma Sansom Vs. Talladega — 41-7 Sansom put on another offensive explosion as they defeated Talladega 41-7 while gaining 550 yards on the ground and in the air. Once again the Rebels defense backed-up the effort in holding Talladega to only 106 total yards, and did not allow them to score until the fourth quarter. Gene Jelks, Paul Hawk, and Van Hoyt each carried for more than 100 yards each in the winning effort. Emma Sansom Vs. Etowah — 46-0 In a rematch of an earlier game the Rebels proved to be even stronger than before as they defeated the Etowah Blue Devils 46-0 for a Homecoming victory. The defense forced Etowah to turn over the ball six times and the Rebel offense was able to convert these scores. Brian Dunn hit two field goals on the night and Gene Jelks and Paul Hawk were the leading rushers. The Rebels had two reasons to celebrate this night; the victory over Etowah and being ranked 1 in Class 5A in Alabama. . Emma Sansom Vs. Gadsden High — 21-15 Sansom defeated their cross-town rivals, Gadsden High Tigers, in the 1984 Charity Bowl before some 10,500 fans. Although the Rebels led 13-0 at halftime, the Tigers came back in the second half to make it a close contest. Reico Malone was a key offensive player with four pass receptions for 98 yards. Gene Jelks was awarded the Billy Hill outstanding back award for the game as he tallied 100 yards and the final touchdown in the 21-15 Rebel victory. Emma Sansom Vs. Southside — 7-0 The Rebels became a “Perfect 10” as they defeated Panthers of Southside to win the area championship in a hard-fought 7-0 victory. Tim Merriweather scored the only touchdown for the Rebels and Brian Dunn hit the PAT after Reico Malone set up the score on a pass from Mike Edwards. Key defensive plays by Larry Rose, Billy Ray Cox, Kenny Malone, Matt Brooks, and Willie Juddine proved to be the difference for the undefeated Rebels as the victory assured them of a spot in the playoffs. Emma Sansom Vs. Guntersville - 42-0 (First Round — State Playoffs) The Rebels hosted the first round of state playoff action by handily defeating the Guntersville Wildcats 42-0. Once again the powerful Rebel defense had put together back-to-back shut-outs, while the versatile offense racked-up 42 points and nearly 350 total yards. Tim Merriweather, Van Hoyt, Reico Malone, and Paul Hawk led the way for the offense, and Malone also had a recovery on a punt blocked by Charles Malone to set up one of the touchdowns. The mighty Rebels were well on their way with this overwhelming victory. Emma Sansom Vs. Gadsden — 27-25 (Second Round — State Playoffs) The Rebels found a tough opponent in the rematch with their cross-town rival Gadsden High Tigers. They collected their twelfth straight victory in as many outings. Gene Jelks returned from an ankle injury to pace the Rebels with 213 yards on 23 carries and a 67 yard kickoff return to set up a touchdown. A fumble recovery and touchdown by Jeff Corbin was a key defensive play that accounted for the first touchdown. Aerial Hall intercepted a pass to set up another touchdown as Watts passed to Reico Malone to cap the 70 yard drive. Mer- riweather carried for the last TD and Brian Dunn hit the PAT to give Sansom a 27-12 lead. The Tigers fought back but were finally stopped when Kenny Malone intercepted a pass to clinch the victory for the Rebels. Emma Sansom Vs. Colbert County — 10-7 (Third Round State Playoffs) The Rebels finally faced Colbert County at Murphee Stadium and proved that they could defeat the Indians wherever they played them. Gene Jelks paced the Rebels to the 10-7 victory with his 109 yards on 18 carries. The tough Rebels defense was led by Billy Ray Cox with nine tackles, Kenny Malone with seven and Larry Rose and Paul Hawk with five each. Brian Dunn opened the scoring with a 22 yard field goal but the Indians fought back and had a 7-3 lead at the half. San- som’s winning TD came on a pass from Watts to Reico Malone and Dunn’s PAT made it a 10-7 victory that sent the Rebels to the semi-finals in the playoff action. Emma Sansom Vs. Gardendale — 7-6 (Fourth Round State Playoffs) The Rebels traveled to Gardendale and found a worthy opponent in the Rockets. Gene Jelks led the way and scored the only Reb’s TD and Brian Dunn hit the PAT that made the victory. Jeff Burgess blocked Gardendale’s PAT to end the score at 7-6. The Rebels now moved to the finals of the state playoff action with this win. Emma Sansom Vs. Greenville — 10-7 (Finals of State Playoffs) A perfect kick by Brian Dunn in overtime brought to a close end of a perfect season for the Rebels and the 5A state championship. To the pleasure of all the Rebel fans the finals were held in Murphee Stadium with the Rebels playing host to the Greenville Tigers. Tim Merriweather had the only TD of the night for San- som and Dunn added the PAT to make it 7-0 at the half. Greenville came back strong in the third quarter with a score but then the Rebels defense dug in a little deeper to shut down all other Tiger efforts. The defense was led by Jeff Burgess, Paul Hawk, Kenny Malone, Larry Rose, Billy Ray Cox, Jeff Corbin, Scott Gilbert, and Aerial Hall. The offense was led by Gene Jelks with 127 yards, Tim Merriweather, and Andy Watts, who worked behind a strong offensive line com- posed of Chris Williams, Bruce Kilgore, James Pullen, guards Walter Smith and Charles Whisenant and tight ends Larry Rose and Chuck McGriff. On the eighth play of the overtime game Jason Brown had a perfect hold as Brian Dunn booted the 17 yard field goal through the up-rights to win the 5A State Championship for the proud Rebels of Sansom 10-7 and conclude the season with a 15-0 record.
