For the FRESHMEN, it meant coming at last into an adult world. They joined the ranks of the fascinating, much dreamed of Senior High, but for many it meant disappointment. For now that the heights of glory were attained, they proved to be a lot of hard work. For the SOPHOMORES, they had just attained enough confidence to be careless and reckless, as they have had the idea that these characteristics belong to all high school students. The JUNIORS faced the most wonderful, yet the hardest part of their high school careers. The problems of the JUNIOR-SENIOR PROM and class rings were theirs alone, but the work was easier with the knowledge that each junior at last was an integral piece of Emma Sansom and it, in turn, a real part of them. To the SENIORS, this year meant the fulfillment of an old dream. Here they were, on the top! For one triumphant year they could rule the world. Looked up to, admired, they were at last accepted as mature and wise. 91 valentine DANCf tommy Mr. Newman Resigns Assistant Principal — Ben Pillitary Mr James Gidley. our new principal Coach George Baker — Basketball P E Mrs Elizabeth Browning — English Mrs Glenda Byars — English What is Teaching? The Brewster twins took over with Micheal scoring from 6 yards out and Mitchell running for the two-point conversion. The Rebels missed a great scoring opportunity after Jeff Ingram recovered another Litchfield fumble. The Rebels drove to the Eagle 11 but returned the fumble. With 5:25 left in the game, the Rebels regained the ball and Tim Brown scored after scampering 21 yards. Mitc- hell Brewter again scored the two-point conversion. SAN SOM VS. HOKES BLUFF 20-0 For three quarters it looked as though Sansom would have a hard time winning their second game. Teddy Hawk scored late in the first quarter on a 64 yard punt return and kicked the extra point giving Sansom a 7-0 lead. The score remained 7-0 until the fourth quarter. Quarterback Tim Brown scampered 6 yards for a touchdown early in the fourth quarter and again Hawk booted the PAT. Reserve quarterback Adam Taylor scored the Rebs third TD with 3:50 left in the game. Teddy Hawk was the Offensive star with 102 yards in 17 carries and a 64 yard punt return. SANSOM VS. ANNISTON 21-14 Sansom played ball control offense and jumped to a 21-7 first-half lead over Anniston then held on to win 21-14. The Rebs must have revenge in their hearts, after the 40-12 loss last year, and played inspired football for four quarters. Teddy Hawk was Sansom's leading ground gainer with 65 yards. SANSOM VS. WELLBORN 7-7 Sansom fans had little to cheer about for three quarters as Wellborn jumped to an early first quarter lead and held Sansom scoreless. The game was a defensive struggle. Mitchell Brewster scored Sansom's only touchdown and Teddy Hawk booted the PAT to tie the game. A late scoring threat by Wellborn was halted when Alan Dunn intercepted a pass in the endzone. SAN SOM VS. TALLEDEGA 28-18 Sansom's lagging offense exploded in the second half giving Sansom a 28-18 comeback win. The Rebs were trailing 10-0 after the first half then Tim Brown threw 3 touchdown passes of 67, 43 and 24 yards. Mitchell Brewster scored the Rebs only ground score from one yard out. Teddy Hawk kicked all four PATS. SAN SOM VS. GADSDEN 46-7 Sansom totally dominated cross-town rival Gadsden High as they rolled to an easy 46-7 win. It was the most points scored by a Sansom team against Gadsden, and Sansom's third straight win over their biggest rival. The Reb's fun started early in the first quarter when Mitchell Brewster scored on a ten yard run and the fun continued all night! Sansom scored almost at will on the tigers, to the delight of all Rebel fans. While Sansom seemed to be doing everything right, if it hadn't been for bad luck the fumbling Tigers would have had no luck at all. SANSOM VS. ETOWAH 28-7 Although the Rebels dominated the game statistically, it was not until late in the third quarter that Sansom secured the win. After clinging to a 14-7 lead Sansom defenders knocked the ball loose from the Devils and Mitchell Brewster recovered. This was the last Devil scoring threat. The Rebels scored 2 more touchdowns by Alan Buggs and Tim Brown winning their 6th game of the season. SAN SOM VS. ALBERTVILLE 27-8 Sansom defeated Albertville 27-8 and won it's third straight Region 10 Football Championship. Tim Brown ran for 2 touchdowns and passed for 2 more. Sansom’s leading receiver was Alan Dunn with 78 yards. Mitchell Brewster nabbed a Brown pass for a 23 yard gain. Albertville's only touchdown came later in the third quarter on a 73 yard drive. Rebel Football SANSOM VS. OXFORD 35-2 Sansom took the opening kickoff and promptly marched 76 yards in thirteen plays with Mike Btewster scoring on an 8 yard run. Darrin Dunn kicked the PAT to a 7-0 Sansom lead. Teddy Hawk scored Sansom’s next TD and Dunn made it 14- 0. Oxford scored next but Sansom came right back on a 14 yard run by Teddy Hawk and Dunn's PAT was good. Oxford scored again. Sansom’s Brown scored early in the fourth but the Yellowjackets came right back to score again. Sansom went to work and with moments left in the game iced a 70 yard drive with a touchdown by Brown and another Dunn con- version. SANSOM VS. GADSDEN (Charity Bowl) 46-0 To Sansom fans there can be only one thing better than beating Gadsden each year, and that's beating them twice a year. Sansom fans were plenty happy as the Rebels crushed a faltering Tiger team 46-0 in the 31st annual Charity Bowl. Sansom ended the season with a 9-0-1 record, the best ever recorded in the history of Emma Sansom football. Sansom completely dominated Gadsden with 353 yards rushing while holding the Tigers to only 20. Sansom gained 146 yards in the air while Gadsden was minus 11. Sansom quarterback Tim Brown was voted the game's outstanding back after com- pleting 10 passes for 131 yards and one touchdown. 1st ROUND STATE PLAYOFFS SANSOM VS. HUNTSVILLE (OT) 27-20 The Rebels took the opening kickoff and marched 70 yards in 9 plays for their first score. After Huntsville scored, Alan Dunn picked off a pass, but the Rebs were unable to make it count as they were stopped at the Huntsville 29 but 2 plays later, Phil Cullins recovered a Huntsville rumble at their 26. Tim Brown found Rufus Cox one play later and connected for the TD. Darrin Dunn's PAT made it 14-7. After half-time the Rebels had another chance to score after Darryle Carlisle intercepted a pass but lost it on a bad exchange. Huntsville kicked a field goal making it 7-14 but the Rebs wouldn't have it marching 74 yards in 12 plays. On fourth down, Brown went over for the score but the PAT railed leaving the score 20- 17. Huntsville took the ball, but Sansom's defense refused to allow Huntsville a TD but they did make a field goal making the score 20-20, setting up overtime. Sansom won the toss and elected to take the ball. On the first play, Brown tossed to Dunn for the score and Darrin's PAT made it 27-20. Huntsville was penalized and a pass picked off by Alan Dunn ended the game. 2nd ROUND STATE PLAYOFFS SAN SOM VS. JOH NSON 0-18 It was a slow going game because of the weather. Neither team scored on their first two possessions. On Sansoms third try, quarterback Tim Brown stumbled and lost the ball, Johnson recovered and scored a few plays later. The first play after the kickoff Brown lost the ball again. A sack by Joe Browning and 2 incomplete passes ended Johnson's scor- ing threat. In the second quarter Sansom took over, but Brown's pass was picked off. Johnson scored and tried a 2 point conversion but was held by Alan Dunn. On Sansom’s next possession, things looked brighter after a 44 yard pass from Brown to Dunn, but three plays later another pass was intercepted. Rebs took the second half kickoff and marched it from their 23 to Johnson's 25, but Allan Buggs was nailed at the line of scrimmage on a fourth down and TD play from the 25. Jaguars took over and scored. On Sansom's next possession it looked as though they might score after Brown passed 68 yards to Rufus Cox. The Rebs were stopped by a holding penalty. Sansom lost another fumble and pass inter- ception in the final quarter to end their playoff hopes. Buggs was the leading rusher with 46 yards on 11 tries. Browning led Sansom’s defense with 3 quarterback sacks for minus 25 yards. A special thanks to Miss Bebe Yancey for her work on the Sports Section.
