THE EMMA SANSOM MARCHING REBEL BAND, under the direction of PAT MORROW, again ended the year with an outstanding victory over almost impossible odds. The new National title was taken when the band won the Grand Feature Parade in the Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival held in Winches- ter, Virginia on May 3, 1975. The festival featured President Ford, his daughter Susan, and entertainer Bob Hope. Sansom competed with more than 100 bands in the Saturday Parade and was the first Alabama Unit ever to be invited to participate in this festival. The Rebels performed before more than 200,000 spectators and against bands twice their size. Another aspect that threw some doubt on the possi- bility of winning the contest was the fact that a virus swept through the band and almost 75 of the mem- bers were sick at one time or another. Despite these unsurmountable odds, the band would not be defeated and went on to win. The Marching Rebels also rated superior in the field show which was held in a downpour of rain. Before leaving for Winchester, the Band was declared the official representative from the State of Alabama by Governor George C. Wallace. Upon returning they were presented a resolution by the Gadsden City Commission praising the band. Through the course of the year the Rebel Band picked up several superior ratings in field shows at: MIDSOUTH, (GAD.); DOUGLAS VILLE, GEORGIA; AND TARRANT. ALABAMA. They also took first place honors in the National Veterans Day Parade held in Birmingham. By setting a tradition of winning in their new red, white and blue Confederate uniforms, the Rebel Band is deserving of the title ’’THE SOUND OF THE CHAMPIONS. 30 Rebel Band Adds Another
