TIGERS RUN-OVER REBELS With dreams of a bright new year, the Rebels of Emma Sansom met the Tigers of Gadsden at Murphree Stadium before 7,500 fans. Unfortunately for the Rebels, the Tigers did not believe in dreams. When the smoke had cleared, the Rebs found themselves on the short end of a 36-12 game. Gadsden unleashed a running game that hit with the subtlety of a Patton tank. The Rebels had some good individual players, but the much vaunted defense as a whole could not get it together. Relying entirely on the run, Gadsden built a 22-0 lead ■ a lead they never relinquished. The one bright spot for the Rebels was the running of Senior half back Arthur Williams. He alone accounted for 138 yds. rushing and scored the initial Rebel touchdown on a 48 yd. run. The final Rebel score came after a long march which was capped by Billy Johnson’s 1 yd. plunge. Anthony Phillips carefully watches each play. WELBORN AMBUSHES SANSOM Four interceptions plus two fumble recoveries were the ingredients Walter Welborn used to take Sansom 21-0. Taking advantage of an early Rebel fumble, Welborn scored on their first possession. Later the Panthers turned to the long pass and unloosed a 63 yd. TD play. At halftime, Sansom trailed 14-0. Wel- born again scored in the 3rd period and the game ended with Sansom losing 24-0. The Rebel frustration was seen as their longest gain was a scram- ble by QB Bobby McClellan after his receivers were covered. The Rebels had several individual standouts but a winning team effort was still lacking. Halfback, Billy Johnson, can’t seem to get his hands quite on the ball! 88 FRIDAY 13th MARKS FIRST REB WIN Crosstown rivals, Sansom and Etowah, met in a game which was built up to be a dual of the Williamces - Etowah's Orlando and Sansom’s Arthur. The final result was that Arthur Williams won the battle and Sansom won the war 21-18. Sansom scored first following a fumble recovery by Harry Smith. A Bobby McClellan to Robbie McClure pass set up the first TD which was made by Arthur Williams. Mike Elkins then booted the extra point and Sansom led 7-0. The second Rebel score also followed an Etowah miscue. Ronald Gray intercepted a Devil pass. Arthur put on an incredible display of power running as time and time again he broke tackles and somehow maintained his balance. Elkins followed with the extra point kick. Again, Sansom’s Arthur Williams could do no wrong. Following the Devil kick, Arthur found an opening and scampered 57 yds. for his and the Rebels third TD. Once again Elkins converted and the half ended with Sansom ahead 21-6. Etowah charged back in the second half. Orlando Williams scored one TD and set up another. However the Rebel defense rose to the occasion and the Devil drive was destroyed when Larry Walker intercepted a pass with 13 seconds left in the game. The Rebels had their first victory under their belts. LEFT: Rebels made Angels out of Devils!! Rick Clifton warms up before the big game with the Devils. Coach Green gives Bobby McClellan a pep talk before he finishes playing the winning game against Etowah! 89 REBELS FALL TO HOMEWOOD Sansom played the role of good Samaritan to Homewood of Birmingham and wound up on the bad end. The visiting Patriots accepted 6 Rebels field errors and fashioned a 48-12 shackling. Homewood came out with both guns blazing. Utilizing Rebel errors and outplaying the Rebel defense, Homewood moved at will and went into the dressing room with a 27-0 lead. Following a 3rd quarter Homewood score, the Rebels began to fight back. An 83 yd. scoring drive, led by Bobby McClellan and Arthur Williams, was climaxed by a McClellan to Jeff Billingsly pass. Homewood was not through and put two more TD's on the board. The Rebels could only score once more and the game's end found the Rebels short again. , ALBERTVILLE UPSETS REBELS 20-14 REBELS FALL TO LANIER MACHINE 69-0 JEFFERSON DAVIS ROMPS ON SANSOM 61-18 Mighty Rebs Burn” Devils to Play in the Coach Owens gives Mike Elkins a few pointers before the Charity Bowl begins. 1972 Charity Bowl The annual Charity Bowl found Gadsden and Sansom meeting for the sec- ond time of the grid year. Gadsden was highly favored but, for almost a half, the score reflected that the Rebels were out to change some minds. A 7-6 lead was held by the Rebels during the first half, but the Tigers pulled ahead during the second half to take the Charity Bowl once again. Senior back Arthur Williams scored the last TD. Williams, who was later voted the game's outstanding offensive player, made all the Rebel touchdowns and personally rushed for 163 yards. Still, the outcome of the game left the Rebels with a disappointing 1-9 season record.
