You can look everywhere and find few men who are willing to do so much in return for so little. To the band students he has been an inspiration and constant helper. To the football team he has given persistent encouragement and re- newed hope. To the baseball and bas- ketball team he has put a new dribble and a great swing in the hearts of every player. Every activity at Emma Sansom has been supported faithfully by his ready help and friendly smile. When the chips were down he was the first to give en- couragement and help us get back on our feet. This man is Bill Atchley. Bill, we can't begin to repay you for all you’ve done so all we can do is say we love you and thanks so this year we dedicate the 1971 edition of the Talisman to Mr. Bill Atchley. 15 16 Roy Pruett, president of the student council, gives a short devotion. Doors Are Open for Faculty members are introduced to the students. All SENIORS proudly raise their hands to identify themselves. Before a record crowd of some 12,000 people, the REBELS were set back on their opening game of the season, 21-13. Emma Sansom scored first after march- ing some 60 yards with the pigskin, this made it 6-0. Garry Hilderbrand’s extra point attempt was good as the score was then 7-0. On the following kickoff Gadsden scored and knotted the contest at 7-7. This was the score as the two teams went to the dressing room at half time. As play resumed both teams came out fired up as the night was hot and muggy. With two minutes left in the third quarter Gadsden scored and led 14-7. The REBELS still fired up and proud of their tradition took the kickoff and marched gallantly down the field scoring again. Late in the fourth quarter Gadsden scored as the game ended in a 21-13 shocker. 124 MINOR EDGES SANSOM, 7-6 After a long road trip to Birmingham the REBELS took the field with hopes of breaking even in the won-loss column. With spirits high and mental thoughts complete the REBELS were ready. After a hard fight during the first quarter by both teams the Tigers of Minor scored and the PAT was good. The quarter ended in a 7-0 Tiger lead at halftime. Midway in the third quarter the REBELS got down on the 10 vard line where harsh calls set them back on die 40. Early in the fourth quarter the REBELS got on the scoreboard by wav of successive first downs covering 80 yards. The extra point attempt was fumbled. The REBELS outstanding defense held and forced them to punt. using the strong running of Paul Brad fora produced three straight first downs. Time expired ending the game in a 7-6 decision. Would you believe I'm lucky 13? 125 REBELS DEMOLISH AGGIES 35-6 Everything went right for the REBELS of Emma Sansom as Johny Bone pranced 21 yards for the first score. The PAT was good. Michael Dudley then broke loose for a 61 yard touchdown run, as the REBELS led 14-0. This was the score at halftime. When play resigned, the eager to play offensive unit really did their thing as they marched some 79 yards with Mike Dudley carrying over from the two. The conversion by Garry Hildebrand was successful. The thundering, ground-tearing de- fensive unit held once again as the Aggies were forced to punt. Ronald Moore got to work shortly thereafter passing a 56 yard bomb to Walter Cran- field down to the 1 yard line. Jim Conwill carried the pigskin over for the score. The PAT was good. Albertville, seeing it was a waste of time running, passed 25 yards for an Aggie score. The PAT was wide. Oscar Ash finally ended all drives by making a jumping catch for a 67 yard touchdown pass. The conversion was good as the score ended at 35-6 in favor of the mighty REBELS. Hallelujah! we WON! Summer practice for the REBELS is a tough time. 126 Give it to me or Bulger will take me out of the game! ETOWAH UPSETS SANSOM BY A NARROW 6-0 SCORE: It was a cold night when the fighting REBELS of Emma Sansom met Etowah’s Blue Devils for a face to face showdown. The REBELS outplayed the Devils.in every category except the score. They out rushed, out passed and even out cheered the Etowah squad, but came up short of their margin. On the first play of the second quarter a Blue Devil broke through the usually tough defensive line, and scampered some 28 yards with the pigskin. Unfor- tunately for the REBELS that ended all of the scoring action. It ended with a 6-0 victory for Etowah. 128 Mike Dudley receives injuries during a rough game. REBELS FALL TO HUNTSVILLE 27-0: As the coin was flipped and the ball in play, everything looked bright for the home team. After the first two downs, the ball had changed hands twice, by way of fumbles. The REBELS on rushing defense forced a Panther fumble on the sijcth but failed to score. The flame was out for the night. The Panthers then dominated the game, scoring twice in the first quarter, once in the second, once in the third, and once in the fourth, but the last PAT failed, ending the hard, gruesome battle. As the final buzzer sounded the Panthers of Huntsville came up victorious by a 27-0 score. During the hot days of summer the REBELS get into condition for the up-coming season. 129 SANSOM SHOWS THE COMEBACK SPIRIT BY BEATING OXFORD IN A 14-7 CLINCHER: After losing two straight gridiron battles the Emma Sansom REBELS being the true winners they are, chalked up a win over the determined Yellow Jackets from Oxford. Tom Nelson cracked the ice by crossing paydirt and taking a 6-0 lead. The PAT by Garry Hilderbrand was good. Oxford then tied up the score at halftime in a 7-7 deadlock. Spirits were high as the game resumed. The third quarter was hard fought as neither team scored. In the fourth period of play Ronald Moore crashed over from the four. The conversion was good and Sansom went away as winners with a 14-7 decisive victory. Ronald Moore throws a long pass for a hopeful touchdown. no SANSOM SPOILS HOMECOMING SCENE FOR BULLDOGS IN A 6-0 THRILLER: On an overcast, wet playing field the Emma Sansom REBELS chalked up win number two by shutting out Anniston 6-0. The strong running of Paul Bradford and speed of Arthur Williams really blew the Bulldogs mind in the first half of play, as Arthur Williams crossed over from the three yard line. The PAT was wide of the horizons as the score stood 6-0 at halftime. As play resumed, time and time again the tough REBEL defense caused interceptions, fumbles, bad punts, and a lot of bruises for the Bulldogs. It turned out to be a punting duel as time expired with a 6-0 REBEL victory. Go in and get 'em Elbert! Russ Bulger and his teammates seem to be a little tired. 131 Basketball: A Season FRONT ROW: Coach Holt, Ken Bynum, Anthony Gaddis, James Green, Jesse Waters - Manager. Listening and studying music helps ease the mind and thus create an atmosphere for making decisions. This subject, although a minor one, adds an interesting touch to one's life. A few of the REBEL AMERICANS perform for our Valentine Program. 159 Coaches Have a Full-Time Job . . . Especially During the Football Season FOOTBALL: Self discipline and pride are the key words in football. Those who wish to excel in this sport must learn to endure long, hard practicing and to obey strict rules. They must also have pride enough in themselves and their team to be will- ing to go the extra mile in developing their ability. These boys must have the desire to play well and thus practice hard. After having accomplished the skills of the game, the boys can then concen- trate on playing fast. But, in order, to win, the boys must work together as a team and not as individual players. BOY'S P.E.: Physical Education helps strengthen bodies and promote good health. Exercise builds muscles and develops coordination while participation in various activities teaches good sportsmanship. Instructors also teach their boys the value of working and playing along side of others. t i COACH MUSKETT - Physical Education, Basketball, Physical Science. The hard-earned experience of our ancestors can help to put an end to the problems of our day which resemble some of those in the past. Improving our world is the aim of most of the World History, American History, and American Govern- ment teachers. They can further their goal by creating within us a concern for the betterment of our world. MISS SARAH ROBINSON - 11th grade American History 170 MRS. Those who apply for jobs with such train- ing as this very often find themselves hired. These skills also prove to be useful in college study. Learning to make the most of the job you may some- day be hired to do is also a pan of business education. Home Ec Prepares Many for Their Future Plans HOME ECONOMICS: Family living is one of the fundamentals in Home Economics. Those girls who some- day plan to be housewives must learn to pre- pare healthy food, thoroughly clean a house, sew, and many other skills necessary in raising a family properly.
