Welcoming new teachers to school each year is always a pleasant duty. As students, we enjoy getting acquainted with and being around our new teachers. This year the students of Emma Sansom High School proudly welcome Mrs. Brooks, Mrs. Barrow, Mr. Johnson, and Mr. Hardy. I The xV'vVT% II 12 I C- 'O , §9 • 8 1963 r Talisman ''' ,7 1 5. Annual Staff Wishes You 2 As Time Goes by at Sansom High ” “You must remember this, a test is just a test An “A” still is high, but teachers, their sympathy apply As time goes by. And if the teacher’s new, your “number” she’ll get, too And that you can’t deny The “low down” from others she’ll apply, As time goes by. Parties and steadies never out of date Bouffants, short skirts and “do-dads” always rate Boys like peg pants, long shirts are a mate That, no “square” can deny. It’s still the same old story, a fight for a diploma, no glory A case of pass or die. Yet Sansom will always welcome students As time goes by.” £MMA-SAKISOM-HIGH-SCHOOL 3 Pep Rally Dedication Talisman ” Staff rrRebel Review ” Staff Faculty Administration Classes: Seniors Juniors Sophomores Freshmen Organizations Features Athletics “Sansom rebels fight to win • and bring all honors home All for one and one for all The Rebels of Sansom High” 7 Dedication MRS. Because she has worked with and for the commercial students at Emma San- som High School for many years, and through her guidance and help, many of our graduates have gone on to successful business careers, we are happy to dedicate the 1963 “Talisman” to Mrs. Marie McDonald as a mark of our esteem. rrrp 7. • ? 1 alisman SUSAN SMITH Editor ELAINE WHITE Assistant Editor EDITORIAL STAFF 10 FIRST ROW: Johnny Clayton, Susan Smith, Elaine White, Myra Satterfield SECOND ROW: Laura Logan, Mary Langston, Jeanie Brown THIRD ROW: Sue Nix, Diane Chandler, Ann Bynum, June Bearden Staff CHARLES ATCHLEY Business Manager BUSINESS STAFF II FIRST ROW: Margaret Gray, Martha Coley, Charles Atchley, Carol Stephens SECOND ROW: Nancy Carter, Ann Nance, George French, Gary Denson, Judy Striplin, Bellann Stewart ' Rebel Review’ Staff RENEE HENSON Editor FIRST ROW: Renee Henson, Jackie Goodson SECOND ROW: Brenda Burttram, Linda Loyd, Sarah Goss THIRD ROW: Michael Haniil, Janice Fowler, Edna Taylor, absent Zelma Jackson 12 Catching Students Guard Shall we gather at the fountain? •OK! Neither team was able to score in the first half. Sansom put the first numbers on the score- board early in the 3rd quarter as Harris romped 13 yards off tackle for 6 points, and went the same route for the extra point. But Huntsville stormed right back to tie things at 7-7. Sansom’s second score came on a 25 yard pass from Muskett to Hoge, who out- fought a Huntsville defender to make a brilliant catch and lunge over the goal line. Harris carried for the PAT to make it 14-7. Huntsville made a final strong bid with a 1st down at the Sansom 1-yard line, but a tremendous goal line stand by the Rebel line held them the 4 downs. REBELS TAME WILDCATS 14-7 Sansom took the opening kickoff and moved 70 yards in just 6 snaps for Their first score. Harris ate up most of the yardage to put the ball in scoring position. A 15-yard pass from Muskett to Troup gave the Rebels 6 points and Harris’s PAT made it 7-0. A fumble by Sansom shortly after allowed Guntersville to tie things up at 7-7. Sansom’s second score came after some nice gains by Harris and Troup. Troup turned left end for the touchdown and added the PAT to give the Rebels a 14-7 lead at halftime. That’s how it ended. Guntersville had other scoring opportunities but the strong Rebel line wouldn’t give in. REBS RIP HOKES BLUFF 19-6 A pass interception and 26 yard run-back by Harris set up the first Rebel TD. Troup carried the pigskin across for the marker, 6-0. Again Harris picked off an Eagle pass and returned it 20 yards. On a fourth down situation Muskett passed to Harris to move the ball to the 2 and Muskett sneaked it over for the TD. Troup’s PAT gave Sansom a 13-0 lead. Hokes Bluff came back with their own 6 pointer before the half to make the score 13-6. The final Rebel score came in the final seconds on a 3-yard plunge by Ponder. 174 SANSOM STOMPS GLENN 44-6 The Rebels rolled past Glenn with ease as every man on the team saw action. During the short time the regulars played, Harris scored 2 touchdowns and Troup scored another. For the reserves. Rickies, Ware, Hull, and Johnny Blackwood all joined in the fun to score touchdowns. Sansom ran up 285 yards on the ground while Glenn wound up with 18 yards. The only Glenn score came when a Sansom defender tipped a pass into the hands of a waiting opponent who fled the final yards for the 6-pointer. REBELS BLAST ONEONTA 20-7 This was a battle of two unbeatens and the Rebels stayed that way. After some key yard age by Harris, Muskett sneaked over from the one for the initial score. Hull’s PAT gave Sansom a 7-0 first quarter lead. Oneonta moved to the Sansom 2 but Troup picked up a Redskin fumble at the 6 and fled 94 yards for the 2nd Rebel score and a 13-0 lead. Oneonta struck fast, then, carrying the ensuing kickoff 80 yards for a TD to make the score 13-7 at intermission. In the second half Harris picked off a Red- skin pass and returned it 45 yards. Six plays later Harris piled across for the score and Hull’s PAT made the score 20-7 for the Rebels. BULLDOGS NUDGE SANSOM 13-7 Anniston, remembering Sansom’s homecoming victory over them last year, came back to win their own homecoming by almost the same score. The Bulldogs, a formidable foe on their home turf, were extremely stingy on defense. Neither team scored in the first period of play, but Anniston crowded two touchdowns and a PAT into the 2nd period. The Rebels got into the game in the 3rd quarter as Harris and Muskett clicked off nice gains. Harris scored on an 11 yard run and went the same route for the PAT. However, that was the last score the Rebels could muster. 175 BLUE DEVILS STUN REBELS 26-0 Powerful Etowah, fresh from a big homecoming win, rolled right on over the smaller Emma Sansom team. The Rebels played hard, holding the Blue Devils to a slim 6-0 margin at halftime. In the second half Etowah took to the air for sizeable yardage and added 3 big touchdowns to the lone first-half marker. Harris and Troup produced some of their usual good running, but the hard-working Rebel line just couldn’t hold back the Devils and so the final score, 26-0. SANSOM HOLDS SCOTTSBORO 6-6 This game was as even as the score indicated with statistics showing little difference in the two teams, except for a slight edge for Sansom in passing yardage. The first Rebel score came in the first period as Harris ran 11 yards up the middle to give Sansom a 6-0 lead. Scottsboro just beat the half- time clock to put their own 6 points on the scoreboard. In the 2nd half it was practically all defense, with Dennis Battles, James Hoge. Ted Williams. Ronald Gray, Greg Penland, Freddie Waddell, Jackie Clayton, David Muskett. and Bobby Blair all turning in good performances. AGGIES OUTLAST REBS 6-0 As the rain came down in sheets and the field stood ankle-deep in mud, it was clearly no night for football. The Aggies, however, took advantage of it and waded across the goal line once in the 3rd period for 6 points and those six won for them. Muskett s passing could have made the difference if it had been dry, but there are always “if’s and it was by no means dry. Harris and Troup, as usual, came through with several good runs. SANSOM TIES GADSDEN 7-7 The two cross-town rivals battled this one out to a 7-7 draw, but it was like two different games. Emma Sansom completely dominated play in the first half, while Gadsden stole the show in the second half. The Rebels’ touchdown came after long gainers by Harris who finally fought his way the remaining 3 yards for the score. Troup’s PAT gave Sansom a 7-0 lead at halftime. Gadsden came back with their own 7 points in the third period of play. Only 5 yards of penalties were charged throughout the game and this was simply an offsides.
