Our School was named for EMMA SANSOM, girl heroine who aided Confederate General Nathan B. Forrest in crossing the flood waters of Black Creek, making it possible for General Forrest to defeat General Streight and save the Confederate Arsenal at Rome, Georgia. There have been two monuments erected in her honor. A statue of her was placed at the Coosa River bridge in Gadsden and a plaque erected at Emma Sansom High School. This is the one at Coosa River Bridge. Protecting this monument from outside invaders is an important job for the Rebels. For proof ask the Gadsden Tigers. Like these lights, our instructors are steady, unfaltering, and ever ready to be depended upon. When we stumble in the darkness of con- fusion and despair, all we have to do is reach out and grasp the hand that will lead us into a world of knowledge and success. 15 MR. W. O. BRISCOE Our Principal Under the guidance of our principal, Mr. W. O. Briscoe, Emma Sansom High School has continued to advance toward the perfection of a more complete education for all. Huntsville set up the first TD of the game with a 31-yard pass and the scoreboard clock showing 2 minutes left in the half. From the Sansom 13 it became 7-0 for Huntsville as the half ended. Sansom came back in the second half meaning business and holding the Panthers to 30 yards on the ground. After recovering a Huntsville fumble the Rebs moved 25 yards in 5 plays for their first score. The PAT was no good and the score stood 7-6. During the 4th quarter Huntsville drove to the Sansom 12-yard line only to be stopped by the Rebel forward wall. The Rebels then moved the ball fast with Hopper's 31-yard run around end and a pass from Haynie to Brothers who galloped 37 yards for the winning points. The PAT was good and the game ended with the score 13-7 in Sansom's favor. SANSOM ROLLS PAST 'CATS 20-0 Again Sansom was tremendously outweighed but there was never any doubt as to the out- come of this one. The Rebs charged 60 quick yards with the opening kickoff to jump in the lead 6-0. Early in the 2nd quarter Haynie led them home again, this time 62 yards in just 6 snaps. Harris plunged the last 4 yards for the score to make it 13-0 at halftime. The Rebels quickly padded their margin with a 58-yard push in twelve plays after holding Guntersville with a second-half kickoff. Harris crashed over from the 2-yard line and the extra point gave Sansom a 20-0 lead. Guntersville made its biggest threat of the night by driving to the Sansom 13 but the Reb defense rose up as one to stop the drive as the game ended. Playing a fine defensive game were Brothers, Elkins. Osborn, Griffin and Hopper. 167 REBS STOMP JACKETS 54-0 The Rebels, held to a mere 14-0 lead at halftime, exploded for 6 touchdowns in the second half to put this game on ice. The only threat Glencoe could manage was 43-yard drive to the Sansom 20 in the 4th period but it was called back, but then Reed set up the first TD of the game with a 27-yard gallop and Hopper carried it on across for 6 points and also for the PAT. Reed scored the next marker and again Hopper carried for the PAT to make it 14-0. Harris started Sansom off the second half with a 64-yard punt return for 6 points and Hopper's PAT made the score 21-0. After a pass interception by Weygand, Troup carried the ball across to add up the points to 27-0. Nance nailed Endress for a 12-yard loss and then Haynie passed to Teague for a 42-yard TD. Haynie to Brothers brought another PAT for a 34-0 score. Haynie to Reed picked up the next 3 touchdowns to make it 54-0 at the end. EMMA SANSOM SMASHES HOKES BLUFF 28-0 Emma Sansom bolted for two touchdowns in the first 4 minutes of play, then went on to de- feat an aggressive Hokes Bluff team 28-0. It took the Rebels only 4 plays to score their first 6 pointer as Harris spurted 68 yards on fourth down without an Eagle touching him. A Haynie to Brothers conversion made the score 7-0. The 2nd TD came when Reed returned a punt 25 yards and then carried 24 more yards for the touchdown. Hopper's PAT made it 14-0. In the 3rd period Haynie hit Reed for another 6 points and carried the PAT himself for a score of 21-0. Haynie to Brothers aerial brought the last TD and point after in the last 6 minutes of play. Playing a fine game up front were Elkins, Griffin, Osborn, Teague, and Weygand. 168 REBS CRUSH 'SKINS 27-0 The stingy Rebel defense, led by Brothers, Teague, Weygand, Griffin, Osborn, Waddell, Elkins and linebacker Muskett, allowed Oneonta in Sansom territory but once in dealing a 27-0 defeat to the Redskins. Muskett set up the first TD with an intercepted pitchout. Reed ate up 24 yards in 2 runs and Hopper plunged the final 2 yards for the TD and also for the PAT to give Sansom a 7-0 lead. Baker scored the next TD from the 1-yard line and Hopper carried for the point after and the score stood 14-0. In the 3rd period Troup picked up the third TD on a four-yard slant and Hopper's PAT made it 21-0. The last touchdown came as Muskett passed to Troup and the scrappy halfback literally took it away from an Oneonta defender in the end zone for the final six points. SANSOM WHIPS ANNISTON 13-6 A magnificent team effort carried the Rebels to their 6th win of the season with a 13-6 victory in their homecoming game with tough Anniston. Mack Teague fell on an Anniston fumble at the Anniston 26 to set up the first TD of the game. Harris swept right end for the TD and went the same way with the PAT for a 7-0 score. Early in the 2nd period Hopper, back to punt, had to fall on a bad snap at the Sansom 10. From here the Bulldogs scored but the Rebels still held a 7-6 margin at halftime. Late in the 3rd quarter Reed received a punt and fumbled it but Hopper was right there, caught it on the bounce and carried 63 yards to the Anniston 9. A Haynie to Brothers aerial scored 6 but the PAT was no good. Sansom moved to the Anniston 5 in the final minutes of the game but the clock prevented a 3rd touchdown. 169 ETOWAH EDGES SANSOM 22-19 A field goal by Etowah in the last seconds of a tie ball game changed it into a victory for the Blue Devils. A jarring tackle by Troup set up the first TD of the game as Fred Weygand grabbed the loose football from the air and carried 65 yards to score. Haynie ran the PAT and Sansom led 7-0. Baker recovered a bad pitchout by Etowah to set up the 2nd TD and Hopper plunged across from 5 yards out for the score, 13-0. Then Etowah came through with 6 points and soon after- ward with 7 more to deadlock the score at 13-13. That's how it stood at halftime. Sansom charged back into the lead in the 3rd period as Haynie pulled a perfect fake and Reed swept right end for the points. Sansom led 19-13 but Etowah hammered back to tie things up 19-19. It looked as if it would end that way but Whisenant booted one through the uprights to give Etowah a 22-19 margin and the clock showing 1 second left in the ball game. REBELS FALL TO SCOTTIES 39-14 Sansom faced their toughest opponent of the season with first string ends, Teague and Brothers, and reserve quarterback Muskett on the sidelines with injuries. Scottsboro took the lead fast for a 14-0 score. Then Hopper dashed 32 yards and Haynie 15 more for 6 points. Harris plunged across with the PAT and the score was 14-7 as the half ended. Sansom fumbles gave the Scotties a 27-7 advantage in the 3rd period, Then Haynie, Reed, and Haynie to Reed picked up yardage and Hopper galloped 23 yards for the score. Reed ran the PAT and the score was 27-14. Scottsboro came back with two more tallies to lead 39-14. Sansom oushed to the Scottsboro 2-yard line but the Scottie defense pushed back to stop the scoring bid. 170 SANSOM RIPS TIGERS 19-13 The Rebels came through in a ball game that wasn't as close as the score indicated to batter cross- town rival Gadsden 19-13. In the opening plays Sansom pushed to the Gadsden one-foot line but the Tigers held. When Sansom got possession again they wouldn't be denied. A Haynie to Brothers aerial ate up 21 yards and Harris plunged the final 2 yards for the TD and for the point after. Haynie pounced on a Tiger fumble, whipped a 23-yard pass to Teague, and carried the final 1 yard for 6 points and a 13-0 lead. Harris intercepted a pass in the end zone to stop Gadsden's scoring bid as the half ended. Whitt carried Gadsden back for a TD in the 3rd period but Sansom retained a 13-6 margin. Hopper and Harris then hammered out long yardage and Harris plunged the last 5 yards for the score. A 91-yard punt return put Gadsden back close at 19-13. However, two pass interceptions by Harris stopped Gadsden's final scoring bids. REBS STOMP AGGIES 41-7 Emma Sansom mauled Albertville 41-7 to end the 1961 season with a fine 8-2 record. Half- back Terry Harris romped for 200 ground yards on 11 carries. When penalties pushed Sansom back from the Aggie 2-yard line, Haynie passed 36 yards to Brothers for the initial score. Harris's PAT made it 7-0. Baker posted the next score with 9 yards up the middle and Haynie's extra point made it 14-0. Albertville struck back with 7 but the Rebels padded their margin to 20-7 with a 46-yard TD by Harris and that's how it stood at halftime. In the 3rd quarter Hopper ripped up the middle 18 yards for a score. Haynie ran the point after for a 27-7 margin. Early in the 4th quarter Harris ran 75 yards for a TD and Troup got the PAT. Baker recovered an Aggie fumble in the end zone for the final TD and Hopper's extra point made it 41-7. Line standouts were Brothers, Weygand, Griffin, Osborn, Waddell, Elkins, Teague, and Reed. 171 . . .
