Hope is the belief, more or less strong, that joy will come; desire is the wish it may come. There is no word to designate the remembrance of joys past. 1961 TALISMAN Presented fcy TLe A nnua 1 Staff of EMMA SANSOM HIGH SCHOOL it res o o o 2 MOMENTS nrM E MEMBER 3 CONTENTS WHO’S WHO FEATURES SPORTS ACTIVITIES ADVERTISEMENTS MOMENTS TO REMEMBER January to December, we will have Moments to Remember. The New Year's Eve we did the town. The day we tore the goal post down. We will have these Moments to Remember. The quiet walks, the noisy fun. The ballroom prize we almost won. We will have these Moments to Remember. Though summer turns to winter And the present disappears, The laughter we were glad to share Will echo through the years. When other nights and other days May find us gone our separate ways. We will have these Moments to Remember. 5 DEDICATION MR. THOMAS BENNY DEAN Active is the word for Mr. Thomas Benny Dean whom the Annual Staff has chosen to honor by dedicating the TALISMAN for 1961 to him. Since becoming a member of the Board of Education of the Gadsden City Schools four years ago, he has worked untiringly to make Emma Sansom High School one of the best in the State. In spite of his busy schedule—he is team captain of United Givers, an active member and past State Commander of the V.F.W., a member of the Mental Health Board, the Cerebral Palsy Board, and a lieutenant on the staff of plant protection for Republic Steel—he always finds time to attend our school opening, our special assembly programs or just to drop by often to offer his help to faculty members. We of the Annual Staff take great pleasure in dedicating the 1961 TALISMAN to Mr. Dean as a token of our thanks for his support of and interest in our school. 6 ANN KNIGHT Assistant Editor EDITORIAL 'STAFF FIRST ROW: Ruth Wright, Martha Tarrance, Shirley Cornelius, Carolyn Corbett, Ann Knight. Briscoe, Principal of E.S.H., has made him a well-liked and well-respected individual. His methods of dealing with student and faculty problems each day are a credit to his recognition of self-rule as long as students conduct themselves in an adult pnanner. He relies on good judgment and a sense of fairness to help him keep peace and co-operation between teachers and students. The ability with which he handles his job makes it difficult to realize how big it is. 16 MRS. VIRGINIA ABNEY B.S., Alabama College Biology Sponsor—Beta-T ri-Hi-Y MR. Now I'm a senior, a dignified senior, I've taught myself never to stop; I've worked like a trooper, oft in a stupor. But at last I have come out on top. No more can it happen— At least not to me; In June I shall graduate, At last I'll be free. No more to his office. No late hours, too. For at last I'm a senior— Thank goodness it's true!
