ALMA MATER Emma Sansom High, we love thee Thus we pledge our vow Honor, fame, the long years through Crown thy head as now. Purple, gold, our colors fly. May their luster glow. Till our banners reach, the sky And thee the world doth know. Sansom High thy name we cherish. Rich in history’s lore May the spirit of thy namesake Guide us as we go. Ever choosing the paths we seek Rebels, staunch and fine, Till we meet with victory, dear Alma Mater, mine. THIS IS THE YEAR! TALISMAN Published by The Annual Staff of Emma Sansom High School THIS IS THE YEAR Of Expansion Of Personal Growth Of School Achievement Of Training for the Future THIS IS THE YEAR! This is the year we have all waited for, the year of expansion, the year of OUR NEW BUILDING. New rules and regulations confused the seniors as much as the underclassmen. Together we learned new routines and details, but Emma Sansom High was still the same . . . loved by the seniors, enjoyed by the juniors, admired by the sophomores and looked upon with a touch of awe by the freshmen. Through our halls passed the leaders and the followers, the wheels and the cogs, working together to turn the great machinery of Emma Sansom High School. Every phase of life seemed even more vivid this year. The football games were more exciting, the club meetings more interesting, the students more enthusiastic in their work. Through all the good- natured rivalry between the classes ran the thread of unity—we were all from the best school in the world. THIS IS THE YEAR . . . The Students Spent the Summer at the Lake MR. WALTER A. HOLT The students of Emma Sansom have Coach Holt to thank for much of our well rounded sports program. His discerning nature is a school asset in managing the basketball and baseball teams. He has turned out district champions and state champions. To a Man respected and loved by every student at Emma Sansom the annual staff proudly dedicates the 1959 issue of the “Talisman”—Coach Walter A. Holt. BRISCOE Principal With a quiet dignity and an almost uncanny ability to see through alibis and excuses, Mr. Briscoe is the fitting blend of authority and understanding. To know him is to understand why Emma Sansom High School has moved forward. Fairness and co-operation are the trademarks of his supervision, and students know they will be met more than halfway when they take their problems to the office. Besides acting as principal, Mr. Briscoe is our chief “press agent” for making Emma Sansom a better school. MELVIN MORGAN PRESIDENT OF THE STUDENT COUNCIL A popular and very busy person is the president of our student council, Melvin Morgan, son of Mrs. George Morgan, 2107 Hill Avenue. Since entering Sansom in 1955, Melvin has been a member of the student council for four years. He was elected by the students as president of the student council in 1958. He is a member of the “Tau Mu Kappa,” an honorary band club. He also sings in the Goldentone Choir. Upon graduation, Melvin plans to enter Jacksonville State College, where he will major in music education. STUDENT COUNCIL OFFICERS LEFT TO RIGHT: Brenda Gray, Treasurer; Melvin Morgan. President; Gerald Waldrop, Vice President; Brenda Pruett, Secretary. i NEW BUILDING FACULTY What is teaching? Is it more than tests, and daily assign- ments? Yes, it’s getting to know individuals instead of merely classes. It’s fanning a spark of interest until it grows into knowledge and appreciation. But there is a side apart from the academic, a personal side that prompts the gen- erosity that helps the students or fellow faculty members, and the merriment and frolic that go into the faculty as- sembly. The jokes, practical and otherwise, that liven up each day, come from the personalities that say, “I wouldn’t change my job for any other in the world!” y MISS MINNIE LOU STINSON Supervisor of Attendance MRS. OF PERSONAL GROWTH This year marked a different paragraph in each life. For the FRESHMEN, it meant coming at last into an adult world. They joined the ranks of the fascinating, much dreamed of Senior High, but for many it meant disappointment. For now that the heights of glory were attained, they proved to be a lot of hard work. The SOPHOMORES had just attained enough confidence to be careless and reckless, as they have had the idea that these character- istics belong to all high school students. The JUNIORS faced the most wonderful, yet hardest part of their high school careers. The problems of the Junior-Senior dance and class rings were theirs alone, but the work was easier with the knowl- edge that each junior at last was an integral piece of Emma Sansom and it, in turn, a real part of them. To the SENIORS, this year meant the fulfillment of an old dream. Here they were, on the top! For one triumphant year they could rule the world. Looked up to, admired, they were at last accepted as mature and wise. SENIORS THIS IS THE YEAR . . . No longer are there upperclassmen to tease us. We are the SEN- IORS ! The honor of the senior yell, and the center section at assem- blies is ours. This is a year of conflicting feelings. We are between the past and the future. Behind us are happy memories, the magic thrill of the Prom, frosty nights filled with wild cheering at football games, careful planning and hard work for bonfires and assemblies. Ahead lies Commencement and then . . . ? We are proud of the past but it is already receding into misty memories. Wre know our lines; we have our props; our costumes are chosen; and we’re ready to enter the part for which we’ve practiced. THIS IS THE YEAR we find our futures. JUNIORS This year was the greatest test for the JUNIORS. Could they struggle through chemistry? Will the Junior-Senior dance be a suc- cess? They entered wholeheartedly into all the activities of the school, working always for fund-raising projects that would bring enjoyment and contributions. They kidded their own serious thoughts, but weren’t ashamed of having thought them. Instead of relying com- pletely on their parents, the JUNIORS worked on their own for their own needs. Their creative abilities came into the light; often master- pieces resulted ... a real proof of the skill that was so rapidly increas- ing. SOPHOMORES This year the SOPHOMORES have finally accepted the mystifying wonders of Sansom High. At last they have decided that they can’t be like Seniors . . . yet. Next year some of them will act like Juniors, will accept the responsibilities of Juniors, but others will go on being SOPHOMORES. They will not grow up. To be an ideal SOPHO- MORE is the most difficult task of all. However, those SOPHO- MORES who worked on the SOPHOMORE float proved themselves ideals. Their float won the second prize at Homecoming this year. This was truly a task well-done by each student. Eventually we shall be the leaders and have the privileges the Seniors now enjoy, but this year, we have tried to prove our worthiness. We, too, have had our heroes, the ones we look up to and admired. We have had our class pride, the loyalty that drives us to give the upperclassmen real com- petition. There were moments of complete maturity when we were one hundred per cent adult, but always we returned to our special world of “not-quite-grown-up.” Soon enough we shall take over all of our responsibilities; this year we devoted our time to the happy job of enjoying our first year at Emma Sansom High School. FOLSOM’S HOMEROOM OFFICERS MISS RICE’S HOMEROOM OFFICERS Assembly MISS THOMPSON’S HOMEROOM OFFICERS THIS IS THE YEAR . . . OF SCHOOL ACHIEVEMENT Emma Sansom has always been outstanding, but this year its star of fame rose even higher. National recognition came to our Rebel Band when it captured the number one position in the Veteran of Foreign Wars National Band contest. Along with this came our new school building, one of the most modern in the state, and a greater stress for academic development. Our achievements in the past may have brought us much recognition, but this year has made us even more proud. SPORTS The group of confident appearing boys in their purple and gold lettermen’s sweaters are looked up to by an admiring student body, but a false idea of ease surrounds their accomplishments. Long after- noons and weary evenings are the mileposts in the life of an athlete. Lengthened are his days, troubled are his nights, with charley-horses, sprained ankles, smashed fingers, and sore backs. As must be done in all competitive elements in life, he works hard constantly so that he may shine for just a few moments when he walks out on the “stage” and faces the public’s eye ... an eye that can be so critical. . . yet so quick to reward those who perform well. Often raising funds for a pet project, such as nominating a “Valentine Queen”, is the common bond. Whether it be selling pencils for cheerleader funds or selling candy and cards to supplement the treasury the clubs at Sansom provide the perfect opportunity for high school students to get to- gether. The French Club, Art Club, Honor Society, and “S” Club, all bring the students together for club projects or to plan a dance or dinner. Guest speakers talk to members, trips and conferences add variety and interest. A look into any club meeting would reveal the buzz of many voices and the combining of many ideas. Friendship is based on common interest, and interest is the keynote of any club. Weary from a vigorous workout with my hula-hoop, I promptly re- tired for the evening. Almost immediately, I fell into a deep slumber. I know not how nor when I arrived at this particular location. The leaves were changing to brilliant patterns of red, brown, gold, and orange. A soft, gentle breeze was flowing through the forest around me. Old Sol was casting his last rays of light from a distant mountain. Slowly, I became aware of a weird music originating from over a hill directly in front of me. Uncertainly, I ascended the slope and peered down- ward. In the misty twilight ... I couldn’t see anything . . . bloomin’ fog. Descending quietly, before tripping and falling the remainder of the distance down the hill, I peeked through the foliage. I beheld an awesome sight. Strange people in unfamiliar dress were speaking to each other in a foreign tongue. With all the courage I could muster, and with the aid of a guard with the grotesque end of his lance gently nudging my favorite sitting location, I approached the people. It was then that I learned that I had stumbled upon a camp of gypsies. After explaining the misunderstanding between us, a special celebration was given in my honor. Dominico Modugno, the chief of the clan, explained that they had just arrived from Mexico and had planned to journey south to Argentina but through a slight miscalculation had found themselves in Alabama. Soon a beautiful crystal gazer happened by to pay her respects. She offered to tell my fortune. I agreed to this and by sacrificing my hula-hoop, which had appeared from nowhere, I persuaded her to tell me the fortunes of my friends. “I see a newspaper with the date September 9, 1978,” she said. “Look for your- self.” As I scanned the front page, these were the startling statements I read: The world renowned explorers, Professors Charles Phillips and Lendon Woodall, shall make their thirty-fifth and final attempt at finding the West Pole. Leon Young, head coach of Emma Sansom for the past ten years, has the longest unbeaten string of games in the nation’s history with a record of no wins, no losses, and 100 ties. Levan Parker of the Boston Celtics and his wife, Judy Carter, Miss America of 1962, announced the arrival of their fourth set of triplets, all girls. Ringling Brothers Circus and its star clown, Larry Brown, will appear here from the ninth to the twenty-third of this month. Gail Reed has accepted the city of New York from multi-triilionaire Kenneth Addison as the settlement of their divorce. Horace Logan, President of the American Temperance Alliance, was fined twenty- five dollars for driving while intoxicated. President of the Musicians’ Union of America, Melvin Morgan, has warned his daughter, Joan Knowles Morgan II, of dating Larry Thomas, son of Senator George Thomas and his wife, the former Patricia Garner. Both sides claim the other is a bad influence on their children. CLASS PROPHECY The hit Broadway musical “Mother, She’s Too Close,” starring James Dodson and Charlotte Striplin. is making its 488th appearance in as many weeks. Jack Linn, four time winner of the Indianapolis “500,” missed his bid for a fifth consecutive championship when he was ticketed by patrolman Ronald Ogletree for driving too slow on the freeway. President of the A.F. of L., C.I.O., Harold Stone, is again under fire by the senate rackets committee. Senators Harold Preston and Jack Leftwich have accused Mr. Stone of donating large sums of the union’s money to his wife, the former Sonja Marbut. Defense attorney Gerald Thrasher and prosecutor Herman Slay are awaiting the de- cision of Judge Howard Simmons on the fate of Gail Mabrey, who is accused of home- wrecking in the third degree. Joyce Howington, Linda Johnson, and Glenda Lee, teachers at Snead College, are planning a triple wedding in March. The lucky men are Jerry Pinkston, Ray Price, and James Knight. Cherry Sue Westbrooks and Gerald Morris are still missing after eloping last month. A raid on the Blue Bonnet, a local night club, found many prominent people in a delicate position. Those arrested were Jerome Morgan, the proprietor, Jazz singer Geraldine Pindston, fan dancer Joan Stewart, and cinema actress Joy Nelson. Airline stewardesses, Pat Vickery, Geraldine Lovell, and Patricia Turner became airsick today before the plane left the ground. Mary Ann Fincher, Barbara Dunn, and Joan McEntyre are the first space scientists to ever take a shower at the Chicago Y.M.C.A. The famed adventurers Bonnie Elkins, Brenda Alford, and Edna Earl Rials have been reported missing while tracking a man through the Brazilian jungle. Ronnie Stewart, professor of English at Princeton, has been accused of attempting to bribe the Boy Scouts of America into appointing him Eagle First Class. Joyce Mitchell, Valerie Noble, Nancy Clemons and Brenda Pruett, the girls who make up the “Marveltones,” have reached the million mark, thanks to their new disc “Arount the Universe in 80,000,000 Days.” These are the girls who originated the “Space and Vacuum” craze. The famed nuclear scientist and novelist Gail Fulmer has recently published her latest book “The Neurotic Habits of the Socialistic Electron and Its Effect on the Communistic Proton.” Astro-physicist Dr. Kenneth Pike, after an exhaustive study for five years, has definitely proved that the Milky Way contains absolutely no traces of milk, cheese, butter, or ice cream. Colonel of the Air Force Donald Bradshaw openly expressed his disappointment upon not being starred in the Steve Canyon series on television. Janice Blackwell has formed the first female professional basketball team in Outer Mongolia. CLASS PROPHECY Novelists Brenda Pillitary and Brenda Wilson have combined their talents and pro- duced a sure smash hit, “The Life and Loves of Marvin Morrow.” Bio-chemists, Dr. Cliff Wood and his able assistant Dr. Kenneth Womack, have crossed a parrot with a tiger. “When it talks we’re afraid not to listen.” stated Dr. Wood. Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Brooks (Jean Garnett Brooks) are spending their second honeymoon in the Belgian Congo. Gerald Cassidy, chief accountant of the Chase Manhattan Bank of New York, was arrested by Lieutenant Arthur Ferguson of the F.B.I. while attempting to leave the country with the S2,000.000 he had embezzled from the bank. Don Moon, four time loser of the gubernatorial elections, stated today his platform will be the same as his others: integration, prohibition, repeal of the Child Labor Laws, and secession from the Union. Welterweight champion James R. “Buddy” Countryman and his wife, formerly Sonja Yother, have announced their latest addition to their family, a pedigreed Eng- lish Bulldog. Butch. Burlesque Queen Lana Yother married the popular recording artist Thomas Bates yesterday at 2:00 P.M. Last night before the Professional Football Championship was played today, Max Davis, place kick specialist, accidentally shot off the big toe of his kicking foot while cleaning his shotgun. His team lost 20-19. Jerry Horton recently succeeded Newton Gilliland as the new' “Tarzan of the Apes.” Three intoxicated gentlemen. James O’Dell, Don Dural Kidd, and Tyrone St. John, were apprehended while attempting to steal the Statue of Liberty last night. The highly publicized romance between Psychiatrist Kirby Reddish and hometown sweetheart Brenda Gray has been called off. “She couldn’t muster the courage to pro- pose,” stated Dr. Reddish. Mavis Webb has become the first woman to swim from Florida to England in the record time of one year, three days, and two hours. Dr. J. D. Archer, a local dentist, through a dreadful mistake, drilled a small hole through Mrs. Sandra Burgess Grave’s tongue. Mayor Gary Graves has filed suit against Dr. Archer. Mr. and Mrs. Rex Waits have had the marriage of their daughter, Debra, and Herman Gramling, the son of Mr. James Gramling and his wife, Linda Simpson Gramling, annulled. The daughter is twelve; the son is thirteen. Fashion designer, Joan Strawn, has displayed her latest creation, a girdle worn above the waist. Mr. Leon Smith and his wife Willie Dean, through a shrewd business deal, bought the Brooklyn Bridge from Ivan Peek, a salesman from New York. CLASS PROPHECY The “Ronald Couch Show,” shall premiere Saturday night with guest stars, Pat Bolding of the Metropolitan Opera, Pop singer Faye Bradford, comedienne Carolyn Bragg, gossip columnist Nan Brackett, and the dance team of Glenda Burgett and Kenneth Bailey. Laura Patton, the sensation from a small town in Alabama, won the Women’s Singles tennis match in Los Angeles yesterday. The Emmy Awards were presented on the Jack Moore Show last night. Some of the winners were Martha Corum as “Lady Godiva,” and Delane Taylor, in her portrayal of “Edgar Bergen.” When Patricia Johnson was asked by James Nelson how her car crashed into his dining room, she said simply, “It was easy. I turned left when I reached the kitchen.” The world’s female wrestling champion will emerge as Evelyn Helms and Sandra Hall grapple tonight at 7:30. Sybil Bowen and Pat Erwin are competing on the popular television show “Trust Your Husband” tonight at 7:00 E.S.T. Completely stunned, I gazed blankly at the fortune teller. Anything so fantastic simply couldn’t happen. So bewildered was I that I passed out. Presently I again heard her voice telling me to rise and shine. Rise and shine? That voice sounded strangely familiar. My mother was pulling me out of bed, informing me that I was late. I think I shall keep this secret. Who knows? It might come true. Your Prophet, “RUSTY” HOUK Of training for the future, of community partnership. Part of growing up is learning to bargain, to earn money and to spend it wisely. This year the merchants of our community cooperated with our endeavors both to our profit and theirs. Many students have secured jobs; summer and after school jobs helped many of us to decide our life’s work. From these business firms who gave us work and training we, in turn, purchased our clothes, gasoline for our cars, parts for making our “jalopies” and all the candy bars and drinks we have consumed during the school year. These business firms have also supported our yearbook by buying ads from the annual staff. All and all this was a year that established a partnership between the students and businessmen.
