THE GOLDEN WARRIOR 1984 — 1985 Wings of the future, for J IP them. -Robinson foffers- Sanger Independent School District P.O. Box 188 Sanger, Texas 76266 Enrollment, - 360 HS 418 MS Volume 51 BEGINNING OF A GREAT YEAR fWM m fmi Sanger High School has a certain kind of Pride that no other school has. It is that mysterious something that sets us apart. Freshmen, Sophomores, Juniors, Seniors, faculty, administrators — everyone who is apart of our school contributes to this special feeling in his or her own way. That “Pride in the Past and Promise for the Future” is the “personality” of our school displayed in our classes, special activities, and personal relationships. It is pride, dignity, enthusiasm, and the special sense of caring that is felt in the air, and in the halls and classrooms of Sanger High School. As you look through this book of memories you will remember the “Pride in the Past.”As you see the love, joy, and excitement in each picture you will always remember that the enthusiasm shared by the students and faculty was truly a thing of beauty. We never slowdown — we are always on the run to the best. We know we’re winners, all of us, in our school spirit. The students and teachers alike show respect for our terrific school. This gives us the feeling of a family, knowing that we care about each other. We will always remember the smiles, greetings, excitement, tears, accomplishments, and even the defeats that got us through this past year. The fabulous year, ’84-’85 not only came back with annual events, but brought with it many changes that will be remembered throughout the years. There were doubtful moments when we received report cards and anxiety when we attend memorable dances and elected favorites, and Homecoming court. This year holds many fond memories that will never be forgotten. 4 We, the annual staff of 1984-85 present to you the Golden Warrior. This book is about you, for you, and a part of you. In it we have strived to perpetuate the memories of our school, its spirit, its teachers, and the friends with whom you shared pleasant associations. In it are classmates and friends whom you may never see again after you leave Sanger High, but will always remain in the pages of this book. It is our wish that you will cherish these memories and will remain a living record of some of the happiest years of your life. PROMISE If OP THE FUTURE, 5 MM0M Our Time Has Come After three years of long, sometimes hard trying times, we finally reached our Senior year. That last year of high school pep-rallies, ball games, and those everdread-ed money making projects. There will no longer be any working concession stands, selling magazines, and selling class fund raisers. 1984-85 was our time to shine, to let everyone know just who we are. We were the ever-proud seniors, a group of people who had laughed, cried and shared each other’s lives for all those years. During our Sophomore year, we enjoyed the best bonfire Sanger has ever had. Our Junior year, we enjoyed our first community pep-rally, and boy was it a success. The Juniors on the varsity squad were very proud to be district football champions and had the great honor of going to playoffs. Yes, we shared so many beautiful memories that will never be forgotten and always kept close to our hearts. As we leave Sanger High to accomplish our goals and fulfill our dreams, we will always remember all the fun times, such as aggravating substitute teachers and chasing girls, or guys. Each year as the Seniors leave there is a feeling of great loss, and sadness, but also there is a feeling of happiness, a promise for the future because Sanger has filled them with the pride to fulfill their promises for the future. Throughout 1984-85 the seniors thought that they were the baddest, best, and 1. Nothing could change their minds. The year seemed to start slowly with Football games and Pep Rallies. The Seniors will never forget Mrs. Barnes Government Classes, especially after reading 1984 written by George Orwell it was so long and boring, we thought it would end up in 1985. Free Enterprise was a change of pace, especially the movies and the films. The year seemed to fly by after football season. Holidays were here and gone. The day was getting closer. Senior-Junior Prom Highlighted the end of the year. Everyone was dressed so sharp. Baccalaureate was a quiet time. The processioal was long, but the service was short and sweet. Senior Night was a time to shine for parents. All of our accomplishments, awards, and scholarships were read. The wills. History, and prophesies were read, also. Trisa and LeeAnn started laughing so hard while reading a certain prophesy. The Key Cutting Cermony followed, a time to show that our unity was to be cut so that we go as individuals. Finally, Graduation Time had come with everyone feeling tense and anxious. Seniors will remember how the locker room was so crowded and hot and how nervous everyone was waiting to proceed. The exercises started with Stephen delivering the invocation. Laurie delivered the Salutatory address; Lynelle the Valedictory address. The band played and then each Senior received his her Diploma. After Brent’s benediction, everyone threw his or her hat up in the air. It was a happy and sad moment for some of the seniors. Seniors had time to break one more rule by racing off the field out of rank hugging each other, laughing, and crying getting all mixed together. As we each go our separate ways we will always have the fondest memories to look back on. SHS has filled us with great Pride and given us the skills and courage to fulfill our Promises for the future. 1. Lynelle delivers Valedictory address. 2. The class of’86 has come a long way and is ready to be “top dog”. The Junior class has shown that they have leadership through Student Council, Honor Society, FHA, FFA, Cheering, Drill Team, Band, and all sports. Their time to rule is almost here. They carried out traditions passed down to them by holding Junior and Senior Prom and by selling Christmas candles. The Juniors also had a country store at the Sellabration to help raise money. The excitement came when the Senior rings came in and it was realized that it was almost time to look toward the future with pride in the past. The class of “87” had only one way to go and that was up! The Sophomores participated in FHA, FFA, Cheerleading, Drillteam, Sports, Band, Student Council, Honor Society, Science Club, and served in offices. This has taught them responsibility which they hope to pass on to their underclassmen. The sophomores showed their artistic talent, winning second place in the contest against halls during Homecoming Week. They spent many hours painting signs, blowing up balloons, and cutting out letters. This is just one of the ways that this class showed their spirit. They cheered on their team and won the spirit stick more than once. They are what true fans are all about! With their enormous class they had more spirit than any other class and proved it by winning the Spirit Stick more than anyone. The Freshman class has also shown spirit by participating in the Spirit Week. They participated in the hall decorating contest, sports, pep squad, and putting more than a few names on the Honor Roll. The classes first year started out with registration followed by all the teasing about being a “fish”, but they proved that they could handle it by bringing new life to Sanger’s traditions. Each class favorite is chosen for the personality and friendship he she shows to each student at Sanger High. Each class chooses the two who seem to be the most outgoing and who are loved throughout the class. Without these extra-special people, Sanger would not have its “PROMISE FOR THE FUTURE”. 52 Favorites MR. AND MISS S.H.S. In choosing Mr. and Miss S.H.S., the student body looks for many things in the nominees. Specific things considered were leadership, character, personality, values, and respectability. The election results proved Seniors David Pennington and Trisa McClure to be the chosen ones. Both David and Trisa are nice and fun to be with. They set an example that the underclassmen feel is suitable to follow. They are each the type of person who loves to support their school in all areas. Whenever they were needed, they could easily be located talking to a special person or fulfilling a responsibility they had undertaken to complete. Pennington and Carrie Prateifl Favorites 53 MOST BEAUTIFUL HANDSOME The student body of Sanger High elected Michael Grace and Aubrea Anderson to represent them during the 1984-85 school year as Most Handsome and Most Beautiful. It has become a very important role in a student’s life. From three to four weeks before the big event, students begin thinking about it as individuals, couples, and classes. Some of the events that take place are the bonfire, the parade, hall decorating, the dance, and, of course, the football game. This year’s events were unique in many ways. On Tuesday afternoon the bonfire had no wood. The faithful, dedicated students of Sanger High met and collected wood for several hours in the cold, wet, and muddy night. The following day the bonfire was cancelled due to bad weather. Some loyal alumni agreed that tradition must go on and the bonfire was burned with only a few bold and loyal fans presents. Hall decorating was a big success with a variety of original ideas. The main competition was between Sophomores and Juniors. Although the Sophomores had a great hall, the Juniors were undefeated and won the prize of 100 dollars. Each hall, including Freshmen and Seniors, showed Indian Spirit. Friday night finally came, with the shrill of the crowd, the jingling of the purple and gold mums, and the crowning of the queen. The pre-game show ended with David Pennington and Trisa McClure being crowned King and Queen, and Carrie Prater crowned Football Sweetheart. Although the muddy conditions kept the band and charmers from marching, it didn’t stop the spirit of the game. As the third quarter opened, a heavy rain appeared, but the guys kept playing, and the loyal fans stayed to cheer them on to a victory of 21 to 0. After the game, the High School dance kept the fun (Continued on page 61) 60 Homecoming 84 Denise Yeatts shows school spirit as she dresses up for spirit week as a hippy. Teachers need time to get away from the strain of the classroom and those tiring hours of grading papers. After all, they really are human too, and, like all of us, they want to fill a few moments each day with excitement and fun. Participating in student activities is one way teachers share with their students whether it be the culture of the pie-in-the-face shared by the coaches or the gymnastic fetes performed by the Bolivar cheerleaders, Sanger teachers showed their school spirit in 1985. “What Do You Want To Do With Your Life?” Breaking Away Every once in a while, there’s a time when there must be a change in the routine! Everyone gets tired of the monotony, day after day after day . . yawn, z-z-z. School life can become a GREAT BIG BORE. What’s a student to do? One of the most popular ways to break boredom in Sanger was going CRAZY!! As you can see, hot pink dresses really make Michael and Matt a pair of wild and crazy guys. Note passing is another attempt to vitalize the school day. Some of the great memoirs of 1985 were in the hands (in the lockers, under the desks) of students. Gwen and Barbara seemed to take their note passing very seriously. How about gossip — that always sparked the attention of the weary troops. If it happened on Friday night, it was Monday morning’s eye-opener. Julius Caesar’s problems could never quite grasp an interested ear the way the antics on the Denton strip could. Daydreaming while absent mindedly doodling on desks was a favorite boredom breaker of some students. Others pulled their pranks and pushed their luck to try to win the “most detentions” award it was a crowded race in 85, but some kept trying (their teachers) until the very last day of school. Maybe Rodney had the right idea. FAD OR FASHION? 1984-85 was a year for many new fads and fashions. Many different styles in clothes were created, from punk to preppie to western. The girls began to wear shorter pants, crop tops, and low heels. Some of the guys began to show personality by wearing parachute pants and punk-style shirts. There was also a change in hair style, with most of the guys getting perms in the back of their hair, and leaving the front straight. Break dancing was one of the greatest fads ever. Only the very talented people seemed to master this type of dance. And when a group of people all got together and started break dancing, crowds gathered around to share in the excitement. There was also a style in automobiles. Sports cars were very popular. They seemed to be the “Dream Car” for a lot of students. Fads and Fashions were a show of personality for 1985. They added to-the good times and helped to show individuality. 1. Breaking away! 2. What a nice car! 3. Isn’t Michelle cute? 4. Chad and Dean pose for us in their parachute pants. 5. Look at those Curls! 70 Student Life Clock wise from top left Greg Reding, David Pennington, Doug Mask. This year we had several students participate in the 1985 D.C.L.A. Rodeo. Sanger was well represented by its many participants. Mike Westbrook, Tim Arnett, and Daren Wright all rode in the bull riding event. Tim Arnett and David Pennington rode in the bareback event. Sanger’s Talented and re- |HHV sourceful Students are very nrfm important to Sanger High p gt School. They are the shining example for other students to follow. To be in S.T.A.R.S. you have to get a certain score on your aptitude test and have an IQ above 130. The test is administered by the school counselor. They go to the Middle School once a week and work on the computer, logic problems, or other skilled activities. They took a field trip to Fort Worth Museum of Science and History and went to Omni Theater to see “Behold Hawaii!” They then went to Bill Martin’s and ate seafood. These students are the hope for the future. 76 Stars No autographs, please! At Christmas, many of the members eagerly decorated doors at Care Inn. The residents were delighted to have someone do something special for them. FHA also spend many hours working on their awardwinning float, judged “The Most Beautiful, for the Homecoming parade. Magazines were sold again this year and were a great success. FHA also joined forces with OEA to win a computer, which benefited the whole school. The Dillard’s Style Show was also a great hit for FHA members. With all the great things that the members and sponsors accomplished, no wonder this was a great year. In FFA, students are required to raise and care for an animal (such as cattle, swine, poultry, or rabbits.) They do this for a period of nine months. This year the Sanger Chapter has held two turkey shoots, an auction, has worked at the Halloween Carnival, and the Sanger Sellabration to raise money for the chapter. At Sanger most people start this stage while entering Middle School. Sixth graders begin their year by giving up a few of their childish behaviors such as: frogs in the pockets, G.I. Joe, and playing with toy cars. They begin to accept new ideas and opportunities and realize that school is more than just a playground. Seventh graders begin to realize that there is an opposite sex. “Going Together” is the Big Thing. This year is also the year that athletes get to start playing sports for their school. Then they hit the top notch — Eighth grade! Eighth graders start feeling superior because they are above all the other classes. They are the leaders of organizations and other activities. Eighth graders also get excited about entering their high school years. The Middle School years are years to be remembered and not to be regretted. They are something to be able to look back on and say, “Hey, we had a GREAT time!” Counterclockwise starting from top left: Sixth graders pose for the camera over their lunch. Emmy and Heather learn how to use the new computers in the new elective that was offered as a semester course. Is 6th grader Chris Mraz afraid to drink the water or afraid of the camera? Eighth grade class officers are left to right: Gena Lyons, Traci Adkins, Vineta Wade, and in front John Briner. OH NO! The cafeteria food has even made Mrs. Calvert sick, while Mrs. Shelton and Mrs. Finley say they will stick to their sack lunches.
