HISTORY OF THE SENIOR CLASS of 1 9 4 8 - 4 9 On a bright sunny day in September, 1938, a group of small, eager children entered the first grade of Sanger Grade School. Of this group remains five students who will graduate from Sanger High School this spring. They are joy Rippey, Clariece Willis, Pat Rector, Sammy Spratt, and Johnny Stricklin. Our first grade teacher was Mrs. Virgie George. During the second grade we gained three students. They were Bobbie Lewter from Union Hill, Troy Miller, from Goodview, and Dorothy jones from Prairie Chapel. Our second grade teacher was Mrs. Margiruite Riggs. We moved to the second floor of the building for the third grade. Teddy joe Wolfengarger had obtained such a love for Miss Winnie and the third grade that he decided to stay over and join us. Our teacher was. Mrs. Winnie Minick. We were all very brilliant and skipped the fourth grade. The fifth grade was the beginning of all our romances. This might be caused by Wanda Schertz coming from Slidell, and J. R. Lovell coming from Krum. Our good natured teacher was Miss Cathlene Gentle. During the sixth grade we were joined by Ollis McFarlin, from Valley View, and Janette Fellers from Slidell. This year we proved that we were very talented by giving a Negro Minstrel. We were guided through the sixth grade by Mrs. Lorena Simms. We will always remember Texas History and trips to the office from the seventh grade. Marilyn Warschun and W. H. Hammons joined us. Our teacher for the year was Mrs. Neppie Burroughs. We really grew up during the eighth grade. Some of the girls belonged to the pep-squad, and the boys went out for spring training. We had three new members added to our class. They were Gloria Horst from Dallas, Peggie Thompson from Green Valleyg and Elizabeth Reed from Oklahoma. We were again favored to have Mrs. Lorena Simms as our teacher. Graduation into high school high-lighted this entire year. We survived Freshman initiation with few scars. This year we were introduced to high school through Algebra. Our Freshman sponsor was Mrs. Hestaline Bur- roughs. We really got into the swing of things as we became Sophomores. Miss Callie Miller was our Sophomore sponsor. The year was high-lighted by a trip to Turner Falls. We had two additions to our class during this year. They were, Celia Baird from Childress, and Melvin Chapman from Gainesville. Our Junior year was filled with plans from the Junior and Senior Banquet. A great disappointment to us was the burning of the gym. We had our banquet at the Yacht Cafe, in Denton. We took a week-end trip to Worth Ranch in Palo Pinto County. We gained four members to our class, during this year. They were Charles Robinson and Whitesboro, John D. Enlow, Bill Walker and Merle Phillips. Our Junior sponsor was Mr. C. D. Allen. We are now the traditional sophisticated seniors. The days and weeks fly by as we plan our activities. It is with mixed feeling of sorrow and joy, as we ap- proach the end of our public school career. We are very hopeful and serious as we think of the years to come and the things we want to accomplish. We are grateful to all who have guided us through the years, especially Mr. Allen, our beloved senior sponsorg and hopeful that we may prove worthy of their training and their iaelief in us. Some have married, some have not, some are rich, some are just livingg but everyone seems to be very happy in the fortune. they have found for themselves. For some reason I desire to visit everyone and find out about the past and present. Here is what I have accomplished. So where could be a better place to start than S. H. S.? I walked into the office and asked for Mr. Boldin, but the cute little office girl didn t seem to remem- ber a coach named Boldin.I asked who the coach was and she said, Why I thought everyone knew that it was Mr. Lovell. In walked a nice looking man, who was no one but J. R. Lovell. He is now married to Nancy Porter. He has had a winning football team for five years. I decided to go see Miss Callie, where a woman about twenty-seven greeted us with a smile. Why it is Marilyn Warschun. Marilyn has taken over all of the Business Departm ent. What is that spice I smell? It must be Mrs. Lindley and her homemaking girls cooking pies. Why that is not Mrs. Lindley. It is Bobbie Lewter now directing the department. Bobbie says, No student teachers over my girls. Sanger is now the town of fine cooks. I was walking down town and met a woman and three boys. Why it could be none other than Janette Fellers. She is now married to Johnnie Richardson and she says she really keeps busy cooking for Johnnie and the three boys. It must be Saturday evening because here comes joy Rippey Harris and a jeep full of kids for the drawing. - Austin will be my next stop. I want to see that nice-looking governor, Melvin Chapmarnwho still says, All politicians are liars, but not all liars are politicians.' Johnny Stricklin and his wife, Martha, are now with the Ring Brother's Circus. They are known as, The Stricks . All the children love to see the Strick clowns and their tricks. What! A woman in the welding business? Why yes, it is Celia Baird Cobler striving for a living while joe gets an education. I walked down to the Railway station to get a ticket to New York. That is where I met Merle Phillips, now working for the Santa Fe office. Peggie Thompson is working in Russells now, while waiting for Gene to get his degree. Gloria Horst Waide is now a private secretary to the president of Bell Tele- phone Company, because the president is now Wayman. New York is wonderful. That is where I met Wanda Schertz Hollingsworth, now Broadway's famous model. She refuses to live on the farm with Holly. Texas University is where I found the genius of the class, Patsy Rector. Pat is working on her degree and has gotten it every bit on her scholarship award. She refuses to pay anything. Now is the time for a football game. Bill Walker is S. M. U.'s best player. Bill is what Doak could never be. Why, who is that drum major marching out on the field? It could be no one but that famous Teddy Joe Wolfenbarger from S. H. S. Look at this neat white house with a cute little mail box with Clariece and W. H. Hommons written on it. W. H. is now coach for Valley View, and Clariece is now teaching science. This sign appears before my eyes. It says Spratt and Son . Why Sammy must be married now, and he and his son are in business. Charles Robinson is now running a studio in California and is doing very well. He has all the beautiful girls around him. John D. Enlow and Ollis McFarlin are now owners and operators of the radio and television of W. B. A. P. . up Elizabeth Reed is now teaching school in her hometown in Kansas. Dorothy jones has her own telephone office and is still unmarried but wedding bells are ringing. Troy Miller is now county agent for Denton County. Troy is still looking for a wife. Girls, he has a good job. Mr. and Mrs. Allen have now retired on the teachers pension. Joy and Cloy were married and jerry is running the women mad. Seems that everyone is doing fine, and my mind is at ease because, I awoke to find that it was only a dream. L x .
