McMURBAY, JR .... ...Sponsor About eleven years ago, in September, 1936, a group of small timid children entered Sanger High School. Of this group, now the Seniors of 1947. only three of our original class remain. These three are: Yvonne Harris, Jeannine Wylie, and Billy Boy Baker. Our grade school teachers were: first grade Mrs. Louise Stinson. Dale Cole joined us in the second grade with Mrs. Riggs as teacher: Mrs. Minick was third grade teacher: in the fourth grade, Miss Cathlene Gentle was our instructor, and Bobby Joe Willis came into the class. During our fifth year, with Miss Alyne Seal as our teacher, two joined our class, Merle Ary and Wayman Waide. We were double promoted and missed the sixth grade. Mrs. Neppie Burroughs was the seventh grade teacher, and Jeanie Flanagan joined us. Our last year in grade school, under the leadership of Mrs. Sam Mitchell, our number increased by four-- Opal Elrod, Percilla Morris, Douglas Simpson, and Weldon Fellers. In the merry, merry month of May of 1942, we were to-become full-fledged 'Fish' Lt. Mary Haygood of the United States WAC delivered our graduation address. One day in september, 1943, we entered high school, and al- though we were only Freshmen, we ranked high in quality, and had Mrs. Hestline Burroughs as our class sponsor. We welcomed Juanita Hammons and Betty Stanford to our midst. It was during our Sophomore year that Miss Callie Miller was our sponsor and Betty Marshall joined our class. The high point of the year came with our volleyball team winning first place in County and District. A number of important things happened in our Junior year. We began having school dances in the gym and the first annual since '41 was published. One thing which shall never be forgot- ten was our Junior trip to Lake Dallas in the back of A.G. S 1 x 4 1 4 1 X. 1 1 ri i A 1 '1 1 Aw ? 1 1 1 5 i CLASS HISTORY CC9H54l7'IZ!?6!j Schertz's truck. It was a day of fun and enjoyment which shal be remembered forever. One of the big social events taking place this year was the annual Junior-Senior Banquet sponsored by the Juniors, the night club style being used. Mrs. Hilda Cunningham the wit and background of it all, served as sponsor. At last the day came when we entered Sanger High as the traditional, dignified Seniors with Tom Hood and Benny Belz increasing our number. Our first three years in high school were during years of World War II, and as all other individuals and groups, we were of course, affected. So it was with a gay and light heart that we began our senior year with the world once more at peace. We had four new teachers who were: Mr. C.D. Allen, Superintendent and Coach, Mrs. Jerry Lindley, Homemaking, Mrs. Alyne Chastain, English, and Mr. E.C. McMurray, Ag. and Senior sponsor. As we look back over these four years of wonderful high school experiences, we realize that the days of youth are not all preparation for future living, but life lived to its fullest extent today. These, truly, have been happy years. CLASS PRQPHECY 6,1 X9-47,526h!b7Af It is a little after mid-term and due to all the cramming I did for the exams, I'm really beginning to fear for my mental balance, KNO comments from you Juniors!! This is the reason I'm now in the office of the famous psychiatrist, Dr. U.R. Nutts, for treatment. He has decided to put me in a trance and reflect my mind into the past, but for some strange reason I feel as though I'm going into the future instead ------- I see a neat little cottage with the name Billy George Highfill on the mail box. After her successful years working with Perry Como, Jean- nine kindly consented to give up her singing career and return to the prosperous city of Sanger and take over the International business. Upon entering the cottage, I find Billy George lazily rocking Michael Jerome, while his wife was downtown over-hauling a tractor. Leaving the Highfill mansion, I noticed a large grocery concern with the sign Wylie and Sons, fall eleven of theml. On closer inspec- tion I see Betty Ann has charge of the cash register. While talking with Yalda Joe, he tells me that layman Jr. has won top money in Madison Square Garden, as a bronco buster. He is ably assisted in his career as a cowboy by his wife, Gloria, who also took top honors as a trick rider on her horse, 'Amber'. I find that after ten years of constant work the Sanger swimming pool has been completed under the able engineering ability of Billy Roy Baker fwhich he learned in Mrs. Burrough's Plane Geometry classl. He has just returned from Africa where he served as Chief Engineer under the King of England. After leaving the swimming pool, I met Yvonne Harris carrying a little black bag, and when I asked her what was in it, she told me that it contained several assorted hammers, which she used on the S.H.S. typewriters. 'For years I struggled with sticky keys, and now that I'm on vacation from my five, I have come back to fix those machines that drove me mad, mad, MAD for years!' and with that she hurried off down the street. I noticed that E.C. McMurray, the king of the roller rink, is open- ing the U Will Fall Rink in dear old Sanger. Now I seem to be drifting over familiar territory, dear S.H.S. The football field looks natural with coach yelling at the football squad, but wait!!! That Coach is Dale Cole,, '46 football player, and former star with Texas A.S M. Then, who is that bald-headed man sitting on the bench watching--why it's Mr. Allen! When I asked him what happened to his hair, he replied, 'Why don't you remember Mrs. Allen?' I entered the building and was graciously greeted by Hrs. Burroughs who is still teaching Plane Geometry. She told me that Hrs. Chastain 1 1 3 Ei 11 2 E at 2 5 Q 1 5 1 i 1 1 is -! ,1 a 1 i I N 1 A ? 5 N l has retired and that Herle Ary Blackburn has been employed as English teacher, after having graduated from the University of Texas. As I left the building which is now a six story affair, I stumbled over the broom which the janitoress, Ira. E.C. lclurray had left there. Since the skating business did not pay much, Ira. lac consented to supplement the family income by working. - I passed bythe bank and remembered I had neglected to cash a check. I found Juanita Haaaons Harris using her knowledge acquired in Book- keeping and helping in the bank, while her husband, Ted Harris is in Dallas running up the score in a big league basketball game. Walking down Silk Stocking Avenue, I looked up and saw a huge neon sign 'HOT SPOTS FOR BOBBY SOCKS'--Chub Fellers owner. Upon leaving this high class night club, I found a taxi waiting for me. Who is driving it? Why it's Jeanie Flanagan. She tells me that she and her husband, J.B. Anderson, takes turns driving the taxi and attending James Burl Jr. I was wondering where I could spend my evening, and Jeanie re- commended the one and one-half ring circus which had just come to town- She tells me that Douglas Simpson is the master mind, the wide awake, prosperous genius of the whole show. Looking around among the people I noticed a man off by himself. Getting closer, I see he is counting pennies, and mumbling to himself. I realize that it is Benny Belz--a staunch bachelor, once 'Miss Alice Blue Gown' of S.H.S. As I go in, I see a large crowd around a tent. Who is this fellow yelling? Why, it's Bobby Joi Willis! On seeing me, he invited me to see his show, which is now considered as gopd as Earl Carro1l's Vanities. At last Bobby Joe is surrounded by beautiful women--his life-long desire. O After this popular act, I hear a great commotion. Why it as the lion tamer trying to make the mighty king of the jungle take his place with the other animals. Much to my surprise I find it is Toa Hood, who acquired this art practicing on his brothers'at home. The last act of the show is the 'Three Candrew Sisters', Betty Stanford, Opal Elrod, and Percilla Morris, who are crowded by swooning ex-Indians as they sing 'Beer, Beer for Old Sanger High'. I was just about to join in the song when I was shaken by the psychiatrist, Dr. Nutts. He told me he hated to awaken me from the trance because I was having such a wonderful time. If you are ever in need of a psychiatrist, I heartily.recommend you look up someone other than Dr. U.R. Nutts. I SENIGR WILL We, the Seniors of Sanger High School, class of nineteen hundred and forty-seven, being of weak mind and failing health, and considering this short and uncertain life, do hereby state and declare this to be our'last will and testament. CWe hope all our bills and burial expenses are paidll To the teachers of the 'Sanger High Institution for the Weak-Minded', we leave our'hopes of an everlasting career during our four years of High School. We also congratulate them on their patience and their deeds for the youth of Sanger for the past years. We wish them many more years of continued happiness and good luck. To the school board we will our thanks.and appreciation for their cooperation and help during the past years. Yvonne Harris, the pianist of our class, bestows her ability to 'swing out on anything' to Judith Ramsey. To Jack Hollingsworth, Weldon Fellers leaves his book, 'The Fine Art of Jitterbugging' He hopes that he will soon develop the talent. Betty Ann Marshall leaves her sweater girl figure to Mary Katherine Stinson, hoping she too, may capture a dream boy's heart some day. Jeannie Wylie wills her ability to drive a tractor and love of playing volleyball to Billie Jean Sebastian. Since every Senior class needs a great orator, Merle Ary has finally consented to step down and give her place to Broohsie lindle. Junior Davis, to you, layman Jr. leaves his patriotic boots and his ability to spell. Because of Nick Cherry's desire for popularity with the girls, Benny Belz graciously consents to leave his title as Dream Boy of S.H.S.' to him. Everyone knows that one of the most dignified Seniors is Juanita Haasons, so that in order that there may be at least one dignified person in the Senior class of '48, she has agreed to leave her dignified manner to LaVerne Masten. SENIGR WILL In order that Bobby Ray Jones might realize what it means to be a safe driver, Bobby 'Jo-Jo' Willis willingly gives him his book on safe driving ill Billy Roy Baker bequeaths his famous athletic record to 'Tiny' Bruce Anthony. Opal Elrod hereby leaves her undying love for the Navy to Betty Lou Snider. Percilla Harris wills her sweet disposition and her calm manner to Frances Newton, and hopes that she may live up to it. Douglas Simpson whole heartedly wants Wayne Harvey to have his straight 'A' report cards and his clever reading ability. To Jessie Denison, Betty Stanford wants to leave her type- writer with all the sticky keys and worn ribbons. Jeanie Flanagan leaves her coquettish ways to lerle Phillips with the understanding that she doesn't break too many hearts. Ton Hood and Dale Cole leave their places on the Bolivar bus and their 'secret longing' for a steady gal to J.D. Jones and Bobby Brown. With Hr. McMurray, we leave our scheming ways.snd ideas to pass along to the Juniors--the future Seniors!!! To the 'Silly Sophs', we leave our dignity and good will. To the 'Sliay Fish', we leave our very best manners, and we hereby state that they are in GREAT need of then. To everyone we wish to leave our good luck, success, and happiness foreverl!!! f T515 Y 652 'w 5 is M X WW Fm ,K V Q I F awfaabw S 9 fe 5 Q 3 w ,, J Q 5 ?w Ez! 1 X Si Q . Q Sa 5?
