SANFORD'S GOLDEN JUBILEE YEAR 1926-27 1976-77 agar WHO WAS MARIA SANFORD? 1 Maria Sanford was one of America's greatest teachers and lecturers. Famed as the best nown and best loved woman in Minnesota , Miss Sanford was the first woman to hold the posi- tion of a college professor. She was endOWed with a great love of learning. A wonderful teacher, Miss Sanford took a deep interest in her students' personal problems. She possessed a marvelous speaking voice, and had the power to hold the audience's complete attention when she lectured. x-Born in Saybrook, Connecticut in 1836, Maria came from a long line of strict Puritan an- cestors. While still in her teens, she began teaching in a small country school. From there she went to Swarthmore College, Pennsylvania, where she taught for ten years. In 1880 she left Swarthmore to become a professor rhetdric at the University of Minnesota. For twenty-nine years she lectured once a week and drew extremely large audiences. Because of her interest in her pupils, she borrowed a large sum of money to provide housing for them. Then the real es- tate boom collapsed leaving Miss Sanford deeply in debt. Refusing to go into bankruptcy, she determined to pay off her enormous debt. It was not completed until thirty years later, when she was eighty. Early in the spring of 1920, Miss Sanford was invited to address the Continental Congress of the Daughters of the American Revolution in Washington, D.C. There she gave her great pat- riotic masterpiece, The Apostrophe to the Flag . She regarded it as the culmination of her democratic work. It has been said that the audience was held completely spellbound as Miss Sanford delivered her brilliant oration. After she had concluded, she said, I bid you good- night on the happiest day of my eighty-three years. This was her last public act. The next evening she died peacefully in her sleep, active to the end. Every state is allowed to place two statues honoring their greatest and most famous citizens in the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C. In 1958 Minnesota's second statue, that of Miss Sanford, was erected. Miss Sanford's image occupies a choice location directly outside the senate chamber. There it can be viewed by the thousands of visitors to our nation's capitol. Constructed entirely of Minnesota granite, the statue itself stands seven feet high. MissSan- ford's is the second woman's statue to be placed in the capitol. Maria Sanford is a woman of whom all Minnesotans, and indeed, all Americans, can be proud. We particularly should cherish her memory because we attend the school that bears her name. In her we find a shining example of all we should strive to be, for Maria Sanford was a real pioneer and a true American.
