PAGE 16 THE VARSITY AND JUNIOR VARSITY 1950 FOOTBALL HISTORY With only six veterans returning from the 1949 championship squad the Red- skins' football prospects did not look too promising for 1950. However, after an upset win over Laconia, N. H., and a defeat at the hands of the state championship St. Louis squad, Sanford High held its own, winning four out of the last six games. Captain Charles Caramihalis was the sole returning regular from the backs who romped for the standout Redskins of 1949. However, it was not long before such backs as Normie Belanger, Gene Savage, Vince Ferro, Arnie Holland, Frank Scott, John Demers and Arthur Mathieu began to produce. In the line, only such veterans as Roger Durant, Francis Mayo and John Maher were available, but it was not long before the frontier line of the Redskins became highly regarded. In a short time such names as Lincoln Tripp, Bud Shackelford, Charlie Killam, John McCullough, Rollie Merrifield, Dick Tebbetts, John McDonald, Merrell Clarke, Jordan Fuller, Bill Vaccaro and others became well-known. In the opener against Laconia, N. H., a heavily-favored Laconia team was beaten by a score of 12 to O. This game was played under lights at Goodall Park before a good-sized crowd. The next game was the game most fans were waiting for. The St. Louis power-packed veteran squad was aching for revenge of the Redskins of '49, The Eagles got the revenge they wanted Biddeford by defeating our Redskins by a score of 33 to 0. The third game found our Redskins bouncing back for the Spaulding High team at Rochester. This was the third game. 4 upset victory by our before 6,000 fans at a 38 to 12 lacing of consecutive arc-light In the fourth game, played at Goodall Park, the Thornton Academy team upset Sanford by the score of 12 to 7. The Redskins were leading by the score of 7 to 6 late in the contest, but a bad pass from center, high over the kicker's head, was recovered by Thornton, who used a sneak play to win by a score of 12-7. It was a heart-breaker to lose. The Sanford High squad traveled to Westbrook the following week and it looked as though Westbrook was going to upset the Redskins. The Blue Blazers were leading by the score of 13 to 0 with only eight minutes left to play. But it was here that reliable Charlie Caramihalis sparked his team to one of the greatest comebacks in Redskins history. Yes, the Redskins scored 14 points to win by the score of 14 to 13.
