CRecll1.xkin4.y flight The '48 Redskins were rated hy all pre- season polls as one ol the foremost power- houses in Southern Maine. ,Nltlioiigli they did not live up to all their press clippings, they were a good team, and such men as Rolrlrie Savage, Bill XYalker, Harold XYalsh, Red Richardson, .lack Flood, Boll Reeves, ,lohn jel- lersou, Tucker Gerry, Dick Hartley, Al l'la- mondon, Spooks Mitchell, and llick Mclfeon will lie sorely missed from the gridiron next fall, Yes. the '48 Redskins are gone hut not forgotten. Braintree 6-Sanford 0 The Redskins journeyed to Mass. to he edged lay an excellent Braintree team 6 to 0. The teams see-sawed hack and forth until the third period when, thanks to a partially blocked kick, Braintree took the hall from Sauford's 4Q to the 26 in seven running plays. Here the Braintree quarterback reached into his lvag of tricks and pulled out a ilanker play which saw Calligan, the Braintree F. B., lat- eral a pass to Billy Brooks, the Braintree Mau O'NX'ar. Brooks seampered 26 yards to pay dirt. The conversion was wide. The Sanford juggernaut started rolling in the fourth period and rolled 64 yards to the Braintree I2 lrefore the time ran out. Although unable to score un- til the last quarter, Sanford ripped gaping holes in the opponents line. Finally Savage fakezl a pass and ran 36 yards to score. The try for the extra point failed. Later in the period Savage, behind superlative blocking, returned a punt from his own 2 to the Thorn- ton 46. From there Sweeney crashed through to the 31. Sweeney added 7 more straight through the middle, and Savage swept left end for the 'lf D. But the all important try for the extra point failed. In the first period, after exchanging fumbles, Sanford took possession on its own 49. Two plays later Savage broke over left tackle, cut back toward the middle behind good blocking, and raced for the score. The Redskins added I2 points in the second period. The first tally came as a result of Savagt-'s 34 yard sprint elimaxiug a 63 yard driveg the second tally was registered by Sweeney, ending another long march. The final touchdown came as the result of a beautiful zo yard run by Demers, followed by a Demers to Matthews pass for the score.
