A student cherishes each one only when it is todayp most yesterdays are forgotten. Some are not lost- those days on which he is changed, and knows it, when something new happens or something familiar is seen in a new light. So a year goes byp the big days, the ordinary days, what he recalls and what he cannot. He has grown. The Year

September 4, 1968 The cycle begins again, the first day. Summer ends, while its warmth and sunshine linger on. At ten-to-eight, the doors open upon the familiar cool halls. The rooms are clean, voided of last year's personality. The conversations written on the desks are gone the battle between regulations and individual inspiration is to be played again: the first marks are made, J.C. Loves G.F. Homeroom period will be extended today . . .' Streams of instructions, forms to be completed until that changeless bell sounds once more, and the corridors are again jammed with a jostling, noisy, flowing mass. Books are distributed, many already worn and scarred by others gone byg now our year-long possessions by our names inscribed in them. Teachers are ready to plunge right in, to start the school year on the day it is scheduled to begin. How they handle this most delicate moment is a clue to their future behavior, and is watched nervously by their students. Far less personal, anticipated with resignation and futility, are the scheduling errors. A senior in sophomore English, a chemistry student in physics. lt seems everyone has a problem, and the lines grow longer, seething with confusion, impatience, grumbling, laughter. So again, back in the groove. ll
